    Fair points, the LCA is actually good for the job there are no issues with it and infact when Indian labour rates are so high it is right for the DRDO etc to be working on ATL and AFP technologies and proving them out.

    I see the light, there are no issues, the LCA will be 9g certified with full loading and in fact the IAF/IN wont need to spend another $10 – $14 billion dollars on things such as the MMRCA, upgrades of mirag 2000, Jaguars etc etc etc Infact the IAF now probably wants to cancel the MMRCA and order the LCA instead.

    We should be hearing news of the cancellation of the MMRCA any day now.

    I am with Ankush on this. It offers an option and that itself means a lot to tacticians/planners. The IAF will have close to 280 MKI spread out in a number of locations; until the IFR tanker fleet increases, this option will allow a degree of freedom/versatility. I’d like to see a few MKI plumbed for about 3 EFTs though – this’d make it that much more useful as a tanker – 15000-18000kg of fuel at MTOW.

    Design load factor is +9g/-3g what is the ultimate? If the design is the ultimate than the ASR of 8 G’s is what the aircraft loading will be in all of the Tejas’s ops.

    Any way again you seem to have answered my questions the design is 9G which is all well and good but it has not been certified for 8g or 9g as yet. if it is certified for 9g with enough reserve factors to allow anomalies like gust loadings than that is great!

    Who are the lead designers of the LCA? How much is it still overweight by? 500Kg’s? if the ADA is an organisation which has been established to design the LCA and bring it to fruitiion and is the lead (program management side included) than yes they did not see the wood for the trees!

    I stand by my words on turbo fan manufacture of cruise missile type devices..

    that article is dated July 2008, more than a year ago. and anyway, its common to see aircraft being inducted while they still don’t meet the FINAL specs- thats what the Final Operational Clearance is there for. the Su-30MKI itself had a similar case, where the final Phase 3 Su-30MKI was the only one that met all the requirements and the previous ones had older software for the radar and other avionics. they hadn’t (in July 2008) yet flown the LCA at all its FOC-mandatory envelope points (max. AoA, max. Gs, etc.).

    nope thats the Air Staff Requirement (ASR). the aircraft is designed to +9G/-3.5 G and I got this information first hand from a guy who worked in HAL on the Tejas at their loads department for more than 4 years. I’d even posted an image from an ADA brochure from Aero-India 2009, where it clearly says that the LCA design G-limits are 9G/-3Gs. you can search for it in one of the earlier LCA threads.

    also, you can refer to this article The Radiance of the Tejas by B.Harry, one of the best articles on the Tejas. it gives many details on the LCA’s design and their purpose as well as mentioning the 9G/-3.5Gs sustained load factor.

    in many ways composites can be, if used conservatively, nearly as heavy for certain parts as aluminium or titanium would be..and the LCA has wing spars that are all-composites as well, something you don’t even find on modern jetliners like the 787..on that program, they did try to change some ribs to composites, but initial estimates found that they weren’t quite as light as expected earlier considering that they’re primary structures.

    however, if you look at the payload, fuel fraction (30% now due to increased empty weight of 6500 kgs instead of the original 45% fuel fraction when the empty weight was supposed to be 5500 kgs) and the empty weight of the LCA, its still pretty good. its range is as much as the Mirage-2000 ( as per Test Pilot Cmdr Mavlankar) thanks to a fuel efficient, lower SPFC engine and low drag. add to that, with a payload almost equal to a Gripen C/D, while the airframe itself is lighter than the Gripen C/D. of course, the Gripen could’ve been affected by its own Air Staff requirements that might have needed a heavier structure (such as higher sink rate than usual fighters, to achieve short landing on roads).

    yes, now please go and tell that to Boeing as well. :rolleyes:they’re struggling with the weight on both the 787 and 747-8F and would love to be told that there is no use boasting of the 787 being a “Dream” liner built with composites when it cannot perform as it should. I get this feeling that you’re not involved with the aviation industry and do not actually grasp how complex some of these technologies actually are..the fact that India mastered it is in itself a praise-worthy achievement. its the same with the turbofan technology as well, which you seem to think is technology even a chump can master and produce to world-class performance specs.

    oh and by the way where did he say it “structurally cannot perform what it should be” ? he said that they’ve tested it to 6Gs and 20 deg AoA and as more test points are covered, the envelope will open further. what will be given to the IAF at the time of IOC will be a Tejas with de-rated performance which the IAF has accepted, as do most Air Forces which act as launch customers- just look at the Eurofighter tranche based deliveries with varied capabilities. and he clearly said that ASRs will be met by the time FOC is achieved in 2012. that will mean more weight reduction efforts and more time and consultancy with EADS on how to go about getting the edge of the envelope explored and cleared.

    and more than a year ago (July 2008) he said that 500 flights more would be required to cover 3000 test points for IOC. at that time they had completed 860 flights or so, and now its closer to 1300 flights. more test points covered per flight as sorties can be of longer duration due to drop tanks and they’ve finished that work, with the full envelope opened up for IOC this year in December at Dabolim, Goa.

    You are proving the very point in some respects I was trying to make about the fact that it is not worth claiming you have X amounts of composites if the structure can not live up to the Job. Boeing are offering customers a traditional Aluminium fuselage should customers not wish to fly the composite one. But they will keep the Dreamliner monicker as this is marketing.

    So what is the truth with regards to the G loadings? something you say you heard from a friend of yours and something B. Harry posted or something that is noted from the primary source? Does not matter if it is years old it is still the official word.

    If the 8g’s is limited by the engines then maybe they would get over it by the Mk2 version.

    However simple point is that it seems that they were so busy learning composites that they forgot to look at the performance side of things. As they say, “they could not see the wood for the trees”. Did they do a trade off between composite and metal? If composite won out and they had a detailed enough study should they not have realised that the GTRE and even the GE offerings would be underpowered and start looking at other engines or possibly re-designs of the LCA at that stage?

    Why did they not have a second engine lined up? Poor project and risk management especially after the experience with the earlier Marut. Why did they wait so long?

    And yes i did say it would not be difficult to manufacture a turbon fan for a UCAV or Missile type role. The simple fact is that it has been done and it is being done the world over.

    Tejas has 45% composites by weight and over 90% by surface area (one of the highest globally, and higher than Eurofighter). Corresponding figures for Gripen are unknown.

    Not a simplistic comparison as that.

    So we can not dispute the numbers you post, but what advantage does that give the LCA over the Eurofighter? Does it have the Typhoons thrust to weight ratio, or excess thrust levels?

    What is the range limited to in this mode or what is the reduction in payload an Su-30MKI can carry because of any extra fuel etc it may have to hold?

    What would be the reason for turning one of your most destructive assets into a fuel carrier?

    It is great they did it but what use is it?

    Maximum g for LCA is projected to be 8g?? seriously? I have heard this before but i was rather wishing it was some journalists typo, hearing from the horses mouth its a bit different.

    They key saying 90% of this or the other is composite, but they seem to have achieved not a lot of the aircraft g rating is 8g’s.

    no point in boasting how much composite you have used if your aircraft if heavier than it should be and also structurally can not perform what it should be.

    I think you are being a tad naive and a touch arrogant here mate. If China and the US does come to blows, it will be a grown-ups war, not the kind of superpower and mates gangbanging some hapless 3rd rate power, like all the other wars the US has fought since Korea.

    In such a war, there will be limits and red lines that neither side wants/can afford to cross, because crossing them so will very likely result in the kind of rapid escalation that might lead to a place everyone dreads. And thats one of the better worst case scenarios.

    So if you are the US SecDef, are you willing to make a 20 for 1 exchange with the Chinese on MilSats? Because as soon as they shoot down one Chinese sat, its open season on all US satellites, and the same will apply to US re Chinese sats, but the fact is the US has more Sats to loose and is far more reliant on them then China. That means China is more then happy to make everyone blind in the sky as that evens the playing field in their favor.?

    If the nation 2 has more satellites does that not make them more survivable? Also which satellites would nation 1 go for?

    The GPS’s ones that most of the world relies on for navigation? How many of those would they be able to attack? Not all unless the missiles are long range enough to reach the other side of the world.

    Secondly how many Anti sattelite missiles does nation 1 have to be able to hit all the satellites in space?

    If you look at this one from the nation 2 perspective, they have it easy. They knock out 1 or 2 satellites that are helping the nation 1 aim ASBM at CBG’s.

    IF nation 1 does re-taliate at the scale you mention, it will be like it had locked itself inside a round steel drum and a let off a shot gun.

    Space above the earth is not as infinite as you would like to believe when you have debris in excess of 5MeV’s and more of energy. Look on google for hypervelocity impact events. you will see the type of damage that can be done by tiny pinheads.

    Nation 1 would be in danger of alienating itself from the world, and it has not mastered PR as the nation 2 has.

    If Nation 1 takes out Nation 2 spy sats over Nation 1 then good but it would not do any significant harm. The carriers would be in the straights by then, predator would be patrolling the shores with Aerostats, J STARS etc etc etc etc..basically war would be as it was without the ASBM, giving no side any significant advantage but still allowing a CBG to be present in the straights.

    Now, the only way to stop that would be to target the Chinese ASAT launchers and tracking stations. What kind of response the Chinese will make to that is anyone’s guess, but what if China responds like for like and attacks the CONUS? Do you think the US can be seen to do nothing if China levels the pentagon with cruise missiles or takes out NASA? If China can’t reach the CONUS, how about they widen the conflict and attack US assets they can reach, like in South Korea or Iraq and Afghanistan for example?

    Would Nation 1 really attack Iraq and Afghanistan and risk the UN and NATO coming into the conflict?

    Nation 1 could send more money to the taliban through the ISI for example or through IRAN that would make more sense and distract Nation 2 from the straights…

    Also if Nation 2 can target Ballistic missiles i am sure it will be able to target an ASAT. The CBG’s waiting to go into the Taiwan straights just out of shot of the D-21C’s or D’s would be on the look out for missile launches.

    Any conflict between China and the US will be because of a small matter, not a fundamental clash that means the two cannot co-exist anymore. Thus its in both side’s interest to establish limits so that things like the above scenario cannot happen.

    The US government has set up limits for the military whenever they have operated near China since the Korea war for a reason. And the balance of power between China and the US has never been as narrow as it is today. What makes you think they US will abandon its aged old playbook now?

    One mans small matter is another mans arsenic. depends what happens. Balance of power has not fully been equalised just yet.

    If and how and when and where.. all words starting questions. The very fact we are talking about this (and so are the Naval institutes in the US) means that the very thing these missiles were developed to do is working. In the game when there is agression against Taiwan or some other ally would the US risk sending American CBG’s?

    These missiles are similar in vein to the atomic bomb the very potential is enough to change the way a war may be fought.

    So next move:

    How do you counter this assymetric threat?

    So what if the ASBM is a bluff, would you risk loosing one or two of your CBG’s?

    send in a sacrificial carrier group to identify potential targets for your own side?

    Would you back down knowing that your only reaction to a strike on a carrier is a un-ambigious missile strike on the enemies stratigic assets?

    Hmm unless they are making a composite hull like some mine sweepers or to avoid magnetic detection etc etc dont know. Subs dont really have an radar that can detect the ships top half.

    maybe a more stable design means less power required or less vibration or something?

    Also if the ship is going to be dedicated for anti subs you would want it to be safe from other surface ships, atleast less detectable so maybe it can hunt for subs longer?

    Ok, I was going to post an even longer rambling thing, but thought the better of it.

    I’d just like some feedback on a question that has been floating around in my head:

    Do you think it would be possible to make a cheaper, less capable fighter aircraft than currently offered by the 4.5 generation – but with vastly superior stealth?

    I ask because of the remarks on the Bisons performance at Cope India. A 50 year old design, but with modern ECM bolted on.

    For arguments sake;

    This speculative fighter has a small internal weapons bay capable of carrying only 2-4 missiles.

    It’s has no radar, but has IRST.

    It has modern ECM and a HMCS.

    Besides the bay it has the usual features we expect from stealth aircraft shape wise, but limits the use of the special composites.

    It has a data link and is designed primarily to work in concert with more capable but perhaps, less stealthy, fighters – or AWACS.

    It has good STOL characteristics so it can fly from dispersed airfields.

    It’s single engined and has no afterburner.

    It’s optimised for scooting around at low level over home territory.

    Built with off the shelf avionics.

    Can be optimised by the operator, France can stick an M88 in, or the UK can stick the EJ200. Open architecture allowing each operator to plug in their own avionics/ECM systems, i.e. Rafale/Gripen/EF derived for national fleet commonality.

    It’s never ever ever ever going to happen, but might be worth some idle discussion… ok shoot.

    Does it already exist in the form of the Gripen or Gripen NG. What is the expected unit cost of JSF anyway?

    Whether one likes it or not, many a/c manufacturers and observers are seeing the 787 closely to see whether Boeing’s attempt will work or not. If it doesnt, then the fact that a huge, rich OEM couldnt make it work will mean a plus for the naysayers and an incentive for many oem’s to stick to simpler tech. for the time being, thats the reality.

    Its not as simple and as black and white as that. You would have to disect each every structure on the 787.

    Yes people are looking at Boeing but they are not waiting around to see if it fails or not before they start.

    What the observers do no one cares about.

    when the first comercial jets failed due to the wrong aluminium the aerospace industry did not give up on aluminium and stay with wood and cloth!

    Similarly with composites.

    Oh well Santhanam did mentioned that TN was a failure ( the bomb did not go off ) and there was a transfer of yeald from Fission device to Fusion.

    Even PKI and Sethna believe the burn was partial or rather the TN did not go off.

    Even if one were to keep BARC and Santhanam/PKI./Sethna argument aside and look for events around the world in this field , No country was able to perfect a military reliable TN weapon in one test , forget about small sophisticated TN weapon , they needed couple of test to perfect the TN device and make it militarily reliable platform.

    And quite a few of these countries have many hundreds of TN test under their belt and wealth of data and experience to go by.

    These folks in BARC must be some god to make a Militarily reliable TN weapon in one test

    Well the cats out the bag no matter what happens and the deterent isnt much of a deterent.

    The perception that India had the TN device was a deterent that perception is gone and is now changed to Indian TN may or may not go off properly.

    Add to this the fact that any conflict in the future will involve some form of ABM. Planners in the future will see a lower probability of damage from Indian Nuclear strike on their cities.

    Hence deterence is no more.

    Does the LCA have a IRST? Just thinking if the DRDO is making an MKII it would be good to have the current Mig-35’s OLS on it with all the different fields of view etc. It would help make the LCA more survivable.

    What I actually do is of no consequence here.
    The cure temps vary from 80 deg C (M9 series) to 180 deg C. Phenolics are about 135. I should have typed 250F thinking about it, but we do use a lot at 220F at a very high pressure.
    The cure cycle can be up to 24 hours in some cases, but as said before, most of that time is heat up and cool down. The actual cure at full temp and full pressure is 6 hours average, and in some cases 10 hours. Very few parts take a cure cycle of up to 16 hours, unless the mold is so massive it takes a long time to heat up. Such a large mold would be Invar too, even longer to warm.
    My “Claims” are not obscure neither are they old hat. A decent google will assist you. Read research stuff, not the claims of the Aerospace industry. You have not actually challenged my “Obscure” remarks, you have just said they are wrong. I see no facts/figures/credence coming from your side.

    Lets just agree to disagree shall we? You have your world view which is your experience and i have mine.
