Since these are carrier capable can’t brazil buy a few squardons? Seems like a good asset to have along with a few decent fighters.

Hmm dunagiri must be close to 30 years old now. Its time they replaced these old frigates. Who knows maybe some navy like PN might acquire it for free. They are still good ASW assets. It would certainly boost their frigates numbers by a good 15-16 % .

swerve seriously how many pilots, maintanance, logistic guys would be required if IN acquired say 50 S-3’s? All this would basically cut into funds for Mig-29k and N-LCA. If IN was assured of getting 50 each of these two and 30 MPA’s they need by 2015-18 then yes S-3 would make sense, but till then its not really helping much.

Thanks Nick. Did you notice in the nat geo clip on LCA. They show a cad model of fully loaded LCA with 6 underwing hardpoints + 1 under the body + 1 (I guess EW point) on the engine intake. Would it not be possible to add another point on the other intake and make it symmetric? The intake hardpoints can surely carry low/medium range AAM’s that weigh about 100-120 kg.

About the landing speed, I was wondering if it is done to see if the LCA can land on carriers and how much modification would be required? Of course a carrier landing involves a lot more than just high speed, but this might help.

Ah-64 logbow would be useful for UK troops in afghanistan and iraq.

I doubt IN would have 100 29-K’s. More like 50 mig-29k and rest 50 N-LCA hopefully. S-3 needs a crew of 4 and in order t0 have 2 crews per a/c that means it needs 8 persons per a/c. That translates to a higher operational cost than even an MKI or mig-29k.

swerve both these links mention the max armament load as 1781 kg.

Yes I notice that the S-3 has a tremendous range. The Jag with 2 tanks has a range of 2600 Km. I am not sure if a maritine strike aircraft needs a longer range than this. The purposes you mention can be achieved using a MPA. An IL-38 or P-8 would have a better range , more payload and longer endurance.

How exactly is S-3 better than jaguar ? The jag has a max payload of 4800 kg compared to a pathetic 1700 kg for S-3? If India already used S-3 then probably acquiring a few cheaply would make sense. But otherwise its just increasing the logistical nightmare. Since HAL is upgrading the Mig-27 and manufacturing more jags, sticking with them seems better.

I doubt S-3 viking can be used from Indian aircraft carriers. It has a wingspan of almost 21 m. The Su-33 had a wingspan of 14.7m and was rejected by IN due to marginal clearance from the island.

I know J-10 A/B is better than non MLUed F-16 A/B but not sure if it is better or even as good as F-16 blk 50/52. If it was PAF wouldn’t waste time and energy pursuing F-16’s. They only have 32-34 now, it can be easily replaced by J-10’s.

Saw the video. Love the new CAMO, its a lot better than the old white one. How many hard points are there on the LCA? I have seen 7 and 8 being quoted and one website also quotes 7 weapon + 1 for EW pod.

Shouldn’t this be in IAF section. He almost never mentions PAF.

Assuming the F-16 deal goes through. What exactly would be the role and need for J-10? It seems like a cheaper , less capable version of F-16 BLK-52.
