“A St Mawgan thread wouldn’t be complete without dusting off this old fave of mine”
Always an excellent photo Dr S, glad to see it again.
Looking closely, I wonder if your photo was taken on “West” rather than on “South” ?
The Canberra’s in the distance behind seem to be taxying along the Northern taxiway. Never knew they were ever parked over there though, always remember them on “South”. 7 Sqn HQ was behind the 404 hangar, as stated above, which became the Police Flt HQ in the 80’s (and is again today I believe) with the small arms store on the side of it. Airwork were in the support buildings along side what was 403 hangar, servicing the winches. These 403 buildings are still in use today as “Engineering” and “Airfield ground Lighting” for the airport, at least for the moment.
(Might have to start a new thread as this one is being destroyed)
Good idea that man, I agree………….
Some great photos in there, thanks for the link. And i never thought i would see a beautiful Nimrod.. but that shot of one outside the hangar just looks superb!
And a french KC-135… thats a first for me.
We used to get the french tankers doing practice approaches quite regularly. Also, we would be treated to the big Mirage bomber doing similar from time to time. Was it the Mirage V?……
I’ve just been sent this link to some photo’s of the 1976 Air Day found on another forum.
Some good shots here, enjoy…

Not the way to motivate your staff. Clearly under some preasure but no excuse. He should apologise and lead by example !!

Good luck with that one mate !
Baz…. sorry mate, just picked up on this thread…..happy to help, I’m on leave that week……….will call in soon to sort………..C
The photo caption is incorrect. The picture is actually of Rab Forbes, the chap mentioned in the article – perhaps the corporal is the photographer as suggested above. Rab is a Sqn Ldr with an AE brevet.
……I didn’t think it looked quite right……:D
Nice to hear at least one MR2 Nimrod is to be kept and it will be the first. Perhaps we could get one down here at Mawgan as it as linked to the Nimrod as ever Kinloss was/is….and I know a man with a trailer !!
Looking at the photo of the “Cpl” with the model, looks to me like the chap is actually a Flt Lt or Sqn Ldr and it is simply a wrongly captioned photo. They don’t look like Cpl chevrons to me.
Schumachers back then?………..and I was just getting interested in F1 again.
Glad to hear Massa on the mend.
Bring back Damon Hill…..yeh!………………………….i’ll get my coat……

Are you tick-tocking!…………just kidding!:D
….often, I was the only one in step!!!
Does anyone out there have any pics from the 70’s of dear old Swinders?
Mine were destroyed in an accident and the remaining were nicked.I remember having to march up and down inside the hangars also.
DI’s were Sgt Taylor and Cpl O’mara.
Cpl O’mara was my DI as well !!… along with Sgt Dalgleish.
Here’s a pic of us on our Pass out parade, snapped by my Dad. Sorry, but the quality is not brilliant. It was a lovely sunny, but bl**dy cold November morning. We had a Nimrod as our Flypast, a bit spooky really as I ended up at St Mawgan for many years……happy days
Note the Canberra airframe on static display in the background far right of the photo. I also remember other airframes stored in some of the drill hangers. A Swift was one of them and a piston Provost also I think. Memory fading these days, wish I had taken Photo’s.
