Nice of you, but the RAF tornado F3 were already doing that job for our Mirage 2000 C for 25 years.
Eventually, nothing has really changed with the Typhoon… :diablo:
Well you know the saying, some students need a little more teaching than others, besides, it all turned out to be different in the real world. i.e. Sea Harrier vs Mirage in a little war in the south Atlantic. :diablo: 😉
The RoE ? What was this ?

Very nice, so what about in terms of weapons and what not? Doesn’t explain the full story of what actually happened does it.
Like I say, I take that “source” with a pinch of salt. Especially when it states, the “English” on more than one occasion.
News from a few days ago, not sure if its already been posted but here it is:
RAF Tornado GR4 aircraft used Brimstone missiles and Paveway IV bombs in the area of Ajdabiya, hitting two tanks, and in the area of Misurata, hitting five tanks.
The weapons were discharged as part of armed air reconnaissance and overwatch patrols conducted over Misurata, Brega and Ajdabiya

@EELightning,
that’s not exactly news. Neither the Rafale, Typhoon or F/A-18 were considered back then. The IAFs original requirements were different from those today. That’s one of the reasons why RSK MiG for example had to make a new offer replacing the original MiG-29M1/M2 bid with the one for the MiG-35. It was also not clear what variant of the F-16 would be offered…
I must admit I haven’t followed the MMRCA competition from the very beginning so I wasn’t aware of what was offered.
@eagle1, cheers for the link, but as redreidy pointed out, French publication, no actual quotes, so I’ll take it with a pinch of salt, too. Even if it was official, I’d like to know the ROE, I doubt it’d be such a one-sided result without them.
No problem, it’s easy to get confused. There were so many EF spankings already! :p
Nic
Oi, we’ve got to give you French a rough idea of what its like to shoot something down! 😛 😉
Since theres very little been mentioned in the news about the MMRCA competition, thought I’d post this:
F-18 and Eurofighter was never considered earlier for MMRCA Tender;
What could be quite a revelation ,Indian air force official have informed idrw.org ,that until end of 2005 , F-18 and Euro-fighter was never considered for MMRCA Tender since they did not fit into air forces requirements then , Initially Air force wanted aircraft in medium weight category that included offers from French on Mirage-2000-5 ,Lockheed martin with their F-16 C/D and Russian offer of upgraded Mig-29SMT.
Probably far from the most reliable of sources but eh. First I’ve heard of it anyway.
@EELightning,
I don’t really like to drop into such kind of discussions, but for the sake of correctness… The 8:1 score was reported from the AdA/RAF DACT exercise at Corsica. This was before the UAE and has nothing to do with it.Wrt the UAE the encounters did happen, but not in the ATLC exercise, but before during the work up phase.
Stand corrected, cheers. I guess I was thinking of the Rafale won 4 vs 1 engagements with RAF Typhoons story.
Still, I like to point out. DACT exercise, it is was it says on the tin and not a full out every man for himself kind of battle, of which for some of that just to like to get it over and done with, which, good for them for training purpose but probably not so good for ones that just want to watch it ‘movie style’, if I may put it. Frustrating, just like what we last heard of the Typhoon vs MKI, last I read was from Air Internatinal, they’re were kills on both sides…Apparantly. Which still doesn’t say much. Still interesting though I must say.
So if we talk about pure kinetic aircraft performances, I will tell you that a rafale can carry more, futher while being the most maneuverable aircraft of the competition. After all it manage to toast Typhoon 8-1 in pure gun dogfight, repeatedly dominate the F16 in various exercises, crush the gripen as well in 2007 without forgetting the SH vs rafale M encounters. It even old its own against the mighty F22 (dogfights). I don’t think that any other aircraft of the MMRCA competition has such a proven record.
Ah the good old French side of the story of the 8-1 encounter in the UAE…Or was it 7-1? Oh no thats right, these figures just happened to come about out of nowhere because the Typhoon and Rafale were, apparantly, on the same side. Still, nice PR to cover up the failure to do a deal with the UAE.
But I think you do know that the Typhoon has just as a proven record, if not even more so. Talking about kinetic aircraft performance, there was a report from a Typhoon pilot, I believe an interview from one in the UAE, that the Typhoon is “actually tricky to slow down”, (something across those lines) due to the aircrafts kinetic performance, no bad thing, which explains why it can supercruise both clean and with an A/A weapons load. In case you’re wondering, supercruise wasn’t actually in its original design features, but performing at supersonic speeds and above with a weapons load, was. As much as I believe the Rafale to be a very good performer, get it to take on a Tiffy at, or above the supersonic regimes, then it’ll probably get into a world of hurt – I don’t believe this party tricks was one of its original design features.
So, out of all the contenders in the competition, when it comes to kinetic aircraft performances, the Tiffy has it. Especially in the regimes I mentioned above.
Speaking about the competition, so much for the short listed aircraft to be announced during the first week of April. Been seven years already…Well, just as long as they take the better offer on the table, i.e. the Tiffy one.
Thanks for the corrections, Scorpion82.
One is wondering if the Typhoons will be using “un-exploding” LGBs like the Tonkas did in Iraq a few years ago? They might come in handy in built up areas where theres a lot of civilians about and theres Pro-Gaddafi armour in the mix, even without explosives on board, a single 1000lb would certainly make a mess of a tank or a armoured personell carrier.
I havent noticed any images or coverage of Typhoon FGR4s with an A/A & A/G load recently, then again I haven’t followed the news or anything for the past few days, way too sunny outside! 😀
Has anyone seen anything as such?
Eurofighter back in Danish jet competition?
COPENHAGEN, Denmark, April 7 (UPI) — The Eurofighter consortium wants back into the race to outfit Denmark’s armed forces with a new fighter jet.
“What we’re saying is that while there is no official Danish tender at present, Eurofighter wants to participate in such a competition when the new tender is launched,” military news Web site Defensenews.com quoted Eurofighter spokesman Marco Bonelli as saying.
Due to budget issues, the Danish government last spring put its fighter replacement program on hold and said it would revisit it in 2012.
I doubt they’ll be carrying a load of 6x LGBs, 2x ASRAAMs, 4x AMRAAMs and a centre drop tank, if it had CFTs then yeah, in general, no. We’re quite likely to see 2x ASRAAMs, 4x AMRAAMs, 4x LGBs, 2x EDTs & 1x LDP. For a basic load for a Typhoon, its a ruddy good multi-role capability.
We’re likely to see the rest of the Typhoons performing A/G sorties, too.
This is interesting:
‘Approval for some of the aircraft to perform air-to-surface missions could lead to them using their Raytheon Paveway II/Enhanced Paveway II precision-guided bombs in anger for the first time.’
We all know (well most of us do) that the Typhoon has done flight trials with the Paveway IV, those have been successfull. Trials have shown a successfull release of the weapon, the RAF have a shed load of the things, they’ve been used countless times in anger on both the Tornado and Harrier, the RAF A/G are well familiar with the weapons and the systems to operate it, the chaps that are operating the Typhoon in the A/G role have probably been brought up to speed with it and the Typhoon’s current weapons systems are capable to intergrate the Paveway IV…So will we see Paveway IVs on Tiffys? Quite possibly.
You do realize that CIA has JTACs embedded with the rebels? CIA did the same thing when the Northern Alliance chased the Taliban out of Afghanistan in 2003, except USAF responded in a timely manner with JDAMs dropped from B-52s.
Well yeah, I kind of hinted before that there is a majority special forces on the ground in Libya, or I should say, theres likely to be such on the ground – I don’t want to sound like I’m officially confirming it. It was “confirmed(ish)” when the RAF went deep into Libya to destroy a particular target(s) only to be informed by the SAS that the mission must be aborted. Thats what more or less was reported.
The situation in Afghanistan 2003 – present (and WWII) is a totally different thing, for one theres a bucket load of our troops able to do this kind of work, FAC. A lot more trained professionals to do the job and not a small number of SAS, CIA chaps & to make things more risky, the cities/towns in Libya are a hell of a lot more built up than they are in Afghanistan. Theres a lot more civilians bunched up in areas, the Rebel groups are full of & riddled with Gaddafi’s goons and they’re posing as civilians and Rebels themselves, so when an air-strike is due, these things have to be taken into consideration.
A Rebel tank position has been reported to have been destroyed by Coalition aircraft, 13 killed & many more injured. And this is the thing you see, its not as easy as one thinks, theres a lot to think about. Of course, they can tell if its a tank position or not, the tricky bit is is figureing out if they’re Rebels are Gaddafi’s.
Also been reported that the British plan to send the Rebels communications equipment, a very good idea but even this has its potential problems. As mentioned before, the Rebels are riddled with Gaddafi’s troops and if these communication systems get into their hands, well. I’ll let you think of what might happen.
@GoldenPawn, what do you mean they’ll take some time? The Typhoons that are operateing over there now are FGR4s, all they need to do is take off two of the inner ASRAAMs & rails then add five more hardpoints (one centre for the designator pod) & its just matter of plugging in a small number of wires, job done. It wouldn’t take long.
All of the equipment needed would’ve been flown out well before it was officially announced, if the gear wasn’t already there.
I can’t wait to see operational AtoG payloads on typhoons. I’m tired of the airshow loadouts that didn’t even make room for an LDP.
Will the Typhoons be able to self designate or will they work in conjuction with other assets?
Nic
They’re cleared to perform both of these roles, so, I believe so.
Are you serious?
A late airstrike is the same as no airstrike.
The target set isn’t an immobile city like Hamburg in 1944 where Bomber Command can take its sweet time. After all, Hamburg would still be in the same location next week, next month or next year.
The target set in Libya is Qadaffi’s mobile infantry, artillery, rocket launchers and tanks. They will move to a new location before NATO can complete the kill chain and drop bombs on empty desert.
Eh? Which is why you need trained personell on the ground if you want particular mobile targets to be taken care of. The Rebels aren’t capable of doing this type of thing, most of them can’t aim an AK-47 let alone operate the equipment needed for FAC work. Because of that, the coalition are quite limited – if you like – to do this type of A/G without adequate FACs on the ground.
“A late air-strike is the same as no air-strike”.
Is that the same as being late for a worl…No, nevermind. 😀
After such a good taste joke, Rafale pilots will certainly laugh at their RN conterparts waiting for their F-35 to be built… :p
Rafale pilot: Wheres your aeroplane?
RN pilot: They’re being maintained & updraded.
Rafale pilot: Ah okay…Where are they? They’re not in the hanger below?
RN pilot: Ehm no they’re not, they’re…Somewhere else…
Rafale pilot: Oh? Where?…
RN pilot: In the US! Yep…The US…
Rafale pilot: What? But why?
RN pilot: Well, we bought them, ruddy expensive they were too…All four of them, our entire fleet cost a fortune!
Rafale pilot: Yes but?…What? Yous’ bought them but?…
RN pilot: We bought them but we’re not allowed to maintain or upgrade them because…
Rafale pilot: Because?
RN pilot: Well they’re not really “ours” you see, we don’t actually own them.
Rafale pilot: But you paid for them!!!
RN pilot: Yes I bl**dy know that dont I!!!
Rafale pilot:…But?…
RN pilot: Look, we bought them, we can’t maintain or upgrade them because the Yanks don’t trust you!…Well us…Well both of us…
Rafale pilot: Don’t trust us? Why?
RN pilot: They think you’re EVIL!
Rafale pilot: Evil?
RN pilot: Yes, the Yanks are paranoid, they think you’re going to steal “their” tech…Or the lack of it…
Rafale pilot: I feel hurt!…
RN pilot: Don’t worry its not just you, they don’t trust us neither, they think we’re evil too even though we almost bankrupt ourselves by buying all four of them.
Rafale pilot: That explains everything then.
RN pilot: Explains what?
Rafale pilot: That big silly looking Yank with shades that looks like a lost tourist.
RN pilot: Oh him? Well he’s part of the F-35 deal, he keeps an eye on things while, or when “our” F-35s are onboard, he makes sure we don’t do anything suspisious.
Rafale pilot: Where is he now?
RN pilot: He’s in London getting his picture taken with a Coldstream Guard at Buckingham Palace.
Rafale pilot: Hmm well, I’m off now.
RN pilot: Where you off?
Rafale pilot: Out on a sortie.
RN pilot: A what?…Oh yeah a sortie, yes, the RAF constantly take the pi$$ out of us with those…
Rafale pilot: RAF, eesh! They’re mean…I’ve got a spare seat…Want to tag along?
RN pilot: Oh yes please! It’d be nice to get some air time!
Rafale pilot: Yeah, you should’ve bought some Rafales.
RN pilot: We wanted to, but we weren’t allowed because the Yanks kept throwing their toys out the pram, so our government bought their silly toy to shut them up.
Rafale pilot: Hmmm! At least we get along, thats the main thing.
RN pilot: Yeah…After all these years, eh.
Rafale pilot: Don’t mention the past!
RN pilot: Ah right, okie dokie!
And they both live happily ever ater…Well one of them does! 😀
My local Swedish newspaper says that the Gripens at Sigonella cannot fly at the moment because the correct fuel is not available. This reflects badly on the Swedish Air Force planners, to say the least!
My personal opinion is that Sweden should not have contributed these aircraft anyway, being a waste of my tax money. In fact I have been against the whole no fly concept from the start, and believe that the countries involved have opened a can of worms that will prove to be a damned nuisance for years to come.
No doubt I will get some flak for saying so, but as a Swedish taxpayer I feel entitled to voice my opinion.
You’re entitled to voice your opinion just as the rest of us are. You’ve said nothing to cause flak over.
The fuel thing is a bit, whoopsy-daisey, and might cause a few red faces for the planners of the Swedish Air Force & you might feel a bit cross that they’re being sent out to Libya of which, you think is a waste of money and in a way, still in two minds about, I kinda feel the same, especially now that the Rebels are a bit miffed off with NATO & Co but I’ll explain why in a moment, but, such as you and myself & many others, our voices aren’t heard to our governments so really the best we can do at the very least, is just keep our fingers crossed for our lads & lasses out there & hope they’re doing fine & keeping safe. At the end of the day, they don’t choose to go to these places, whether they like it or not.
About the Rebels complaining about the air-strikes. I see where they’re coming from but on the other hand, what more do they want? They requested air-strikes, they were late coming but they came, they requested they didn’t want or need foreign troops on the ground, fair enough we’re all happy with that – but I’ll bet any money that they’re getting some kind of help from a small majority of special forces such as the SAS on the ground, this has already been “hinted” when on one occasion a number of RAF Tornados had to aport a mission while operating from RAF Marham. The Rebels have been given a hell of a life line and if it weren’t for the coaltition air-strikes they’d be in so much sh*te if not dead already.
The coalitition have/are doing their part, they ought to do their part rather than fireing AK-47 rounds into the air like trigger happy muppets. They can’t expect CAS to be there when the say NOW because they don’t have the equipement to do so, and even if they did have such tech they wouldn’t know what to do with it because they’re not trained to operate the effin things let alone call in a complicated air-strike.
My uncle was trained/taught in the RM as a FAC later in his career and he reckoned it was a very complicated process, mentally, there is so much going on in your head and once you call the shots, you’ve got one hell of a responsibility, especially if you f**ck up!
So, give a guy that thinks its a good idea to hold a mortar under his arms while his mate attempts to load a round into it a chance to be a FAC? Would you trust him?…Hmmm…
A agree theres a majority of Rebels that know what they’re doing, but they come in small numbers.
There were no official announcements about the MMRCA contest although rumours unanimously suggest that Dassault’s Rafale and Eurofighter’s Typhoon are both in a favourable position. Eurofighter’s bid offers a favourable price with an invitation by EADS for India to join the Typhoon programme as a partner. If price is the decisive factor, then the single engine JAS 39 Gripen, the third European contender, has a favourable advantage.
Air International, Asia News, Aero India 2011, page 25.
Now, now play nice…LOL…Can’t say that, we’re partners now & we have to share things such as Aircraft Carriers…Oh dear…The punch ups are going to be unreal on those! Wonder how long it takes within 50 years before someone in RN decides to put a white flag up when its Frances turn to take the lead in commanding it for six months. 😀
Friendly banter, no harm intended. 😀
On a serious note: Speaking of the Tonka and Mirage, I’ve always believed these two would make the perfect combo; Tonka GR4s for A/G and Mirage for top cover.
Was reading in Air Forces Monthly today about the Tornado GR4 from Qinetiq, very, very little was mentioned of what they were up to as nobody knows, but they showed a picture of a Tornado GR4 with, what looked like,a 1500 litre “tank/pod” with a “lense” of some sort on the bottom of it. It looked like a recce pod but it didn’t say. Could have been anything.
