Super Hornet is not a joke. It is the best strike fighter in service anywhere in the world. With all the weapon stations it has, a group can self escort themselves while still having a decent A2G load.
Agree with you about it not being a joke. But the bit about it being the best strike fighter in the world? Nope, have to disagree. Yep, it has a lot of weapon stations, they’re neatly laid out, but not as well laid out as say, Typhoon’s weapon stations, one drop tank, six stores for A/G, 1000lb class, and another six for A/A which will be/is the very least. You’d struggle to get that much on the F-18. If its possible.
I know everyone has there own opinions and all that but the Phantom is not an ugly fighter!! The king of UGLY is ofcourse the Boeing X-32 – the Pregnant Whale or Sir Winston churchill:) , it had STEALTH and UGLINESS combined with high level of integration making it lethal in WVR combat because the enemy would refuse to engage the whale 😉
You’re talking about the greatest leader there, i.e. Sir Winston Churchill whom of which had balls the size of watermelons where as the Boeing X-32 didn’t have any and on the Phantom, balls were the size of two misshaped peanuts-one of which was inept. :p
Others,
F-104.
A-10.
Phantom.
F-117. Looked like it’d been drawn by a 7 year old kid.
A-6 Intruder. Looks unfinished.
A-4 Skyhawk. Or, Harriers lunch!
Navy fighter gap? Easy solution! Get the Marines out of fast mover aviation!
Do the Marines really need fighter aircraft anyway, or shall I say, does the US have to have fighter aircraft for the US Marines? Maybe I don’t know enough, but I don’t get why have them, the US Navy & Air Force have a sh*t load to start with…
Can’t believe I missed this thread…Have to have a proper read through it when I get a little more time. But amazing pictures, but also sad, like for the ones in the scrap, she deserves a much better retirement home than that place…Sad…
This thread was, (see what I did there? I said WAS) quite interesting up until a few posts ago…Some people have too much time on their hands.
Best looking fighter from the 50’s to 80’s-if you count its operational service. Is without doubt the EE/BAC Lightning! Ahead of its time when it was introduced, first pioneered HOTAS, could supercruise and not BOAST about & decide to “Define it”, (Eh Yank? Poke in the eye*) could catch and overtake Concorde where the likes of F-16, F-15, Mirage, F-104….Whats the word?….Couldn’t! Incredible looks and performance to match! What a machine! Shame it never got the updates & upgrades it deserved…
Mirage, Rafale?…They’re French, say no more. They sure know the definition of beauty.
Harrier? Its certianly a pretty looking thing for sure, but not quite an EE Lightning. But its safe to say the Harrier, is without doubt the COOLEST aeroplane ever made with a jet engine! And its British, with a stiff upper lip, a cup of tea in one hand and a knuckle duster on the other!

The following comment is by an experienced member of Bharat Rakshak forum, whose opinions are quite respected :-
The US is just waiting for a sucker to buy either manufacturing line (F-16/F-18),as this will be most probably the last major order of either type, both being phased out in favour of the JSF.The major allies of the US are all buying the JSF so buying an inferior aircraft for the IAF appears meaningless,as whatever tech. is acquired will be quickly obsolete.
If the LCA Mk-2 is being pursued with singleminded vigour,as it should be,after so much of effort, how are we going to absorb, evaluate and maintain so many different types of tech,LCA (desi/foreign),MMRCA,SU-30MKI,MIG-29 upgrades,5th-gen fighter and the MCA’s ambitions to boot! We appear to be scouring the bucket of almost every major manufacturer and will eventually have a proliferation of at least 5 types, when air forces all over the world are trying to streamline their forces with fewer types for obvious reasons.I agree with the above. The IAF’s policies contradict global trends of streamlining the number of fighter types. Besides, Lockheed and Boeing only need a new customer before their lines shut down and result in job losses and revenue losses. F-16 and F-18 are treated as “old hags” in the USAF itself, and are being phased out in lieu of F-35 and F-22. They are to the USAF, what MiG-21 and MiG-23 are to the IAF.
Hence, there is no use in inducting the F-16 and F-18 in the IAF at all.
I personally consider the comments as being in poor taste. Clearly, the original poster could have expressed his opinioins without insults…………
BTW The US is clearly not waiting for a “sucker” nor does the USAF consider “F-16’s” as “old hags”.
Well, like I pretty much said before, its just an opinion, i.e his or theirs. “Waiting for a sucker” “old hags” “inferior aircraft”…Opinions-Opinions…No big deal, doesn’t make them true or even false. Speaking of which, technically the F-16 & F-18, (well MAYBE not the F-18) is an old hag…Then so is George Foreman (Boxer) but would you still let him try & knock you out? I think not. (Metaphor with a compliment there).
So still, I don’t think theres anything “Anti-American” in the users post. Say for example, me, I don’t really like the F-35, nor do I like American cars amongst other things, so does that make me “Anti-American”? No! So just because that particular user doesn’t like, so it seems, the F-16 & F-18 & has an opinion aganst your country doesn’t make him “Anti-American”.
Read Post#309…………..Clearly, Anti-American Bias! Regardless, I have no problem with anyone expressing the pro’s or con’s of each design. Yet, the name calling and sarcasm is really uncalled for……
BTW Get some rest…….;)
I read post #309, yesterday and again just now and I didn’t read anything of “anti-American”, sarcasm, name calling of the sort in that particular post, was just nothing more than an opinion, an harmless one at that…
Please, all of the types in the MMRCA are inferior to the F-35. So, what does it make a differences if its a Typhoon, Super Hornet, or Mig-35. Nor does if meantion any to the many benefits of the F-16IN or Super Hornet. Sorry, that argument hardly holds water and is just the usual Anti-American Propaganda.:p
“Anti-American” propaganda? Where?…Must be a new definition of “Anti-American” out…Or I’ve missed something…“Please, all of the types in the MMRCA are inferior to the F-35”.And?…No matter, been a long week…
Glad the pilot is ok. 🙂
I seen this news on pprune a few days ago…And of course, theres A LOT of kn*bs on there and sure enough, they came out with their lame “funny” posts about her. If any of them are in the RAF, (giggles* saracasm* fat chance, they wish) and get the chance to work with her at some point…I feel sorry for her. What d*cks!
Anyway, good news, very good news! hope she does well with the Reds, sure she will of course! And what great places for displays, British Formula 1 Grand Prix, Great North Run in Newcastle, London Olympics. I live in Newcastle, actually about 5 minutes away from the Tyne Bridge. So there’ll be a good chance I’ll see them! Nice!
And fly’s in a Tonka too? Great! Love those! 😀
Publisher’s Clearing House will bring me my $100 million check before The Messiah grows a spine.
When you say Messiah? You mean that guy, whats his face? President of the US…?…The one that can walk on water, (Well most of the US seems to think he can)…God, Jesus, the guy that parted the Red Sea…Moses?…No, Barrack Obama, yeah him, right? Am I right? 😀 😉
Back to RN fighters, i noticed through other sites that Hawker Siddeley had a supersonic update in the late ’80s, I think P1126?? anyone any further info? Would they have operated from “Invincibles” or a new class? Performance/ weapon load? etc
I believe you’re right about that. I remember once seeing and reading a little article about something like that, I really can’t remember where or “When”, but was a good few years ago when I was just a kid…I can’t remember what it said exactly, but the picture showed a Harrier GR3 modified with two HUGE front vectoring nozzles with the rear ones just being the normal hot ones, in hover mode. Below the picture the caption just said something; “The Harrier GR3 Modified With two Front ‘Supersonic’ Vectoring Nozzles”….Something like that anyway.
Really can’t remember anything else about it, and I’m 100% sure that it was a GR3 and I’m sure that apart from the nozzles, it wasn’t modfied, by the looks of it anyway.
But sorry, can’t find anything of it. 🙁
Maybe Jackonicko knows a little more about that?…
Already answered them two posts ago. Lots of coulds, and ifs sensationalised for the discovery channel. No actual demonstration of extreme difficulty. That show is just a series of fantasies. What if Argentina had Clingon support?
Oh I see now yes, so what Sir Sandy Woodward & General Julian Thompson said were fantasies were they? So what were they saying then?
What if Argentina had Clingon support?
I do not know? What if Argentina had Clinton support?
That is correct, I am right.
There is when you ignore them, but again, I am right.
Yeah…Of course you are…
But still, seems that you don’t want to believe Sir Sandy Woodwards & General Julian Thompsons words, I wonder why? Because they are the ones that were/are right?…
