Japan might just hold out to be a partner with Saab in their 5th gen fighter. If Korea is being offered a role, the Japanese surely merit the same offer.
Sounds like a good idea, but can Japan wait? It’ll be some time before we even see a prototype in the air, or even on the ground….
Japan is clearly free to purchase what they want………….I just personally don’t believe the Typhoon would offer the level of Superiority over advance Flanker Models from Russia or China. So, besides the reasons I stated for selecting an American Type. I believe they are the only ones available to give that degree of air superiority over the aforementioned. IMHO:cool:
Well, like you say, thats your personal opinion, which is fine, everyones intitled to one. But you might want to check up on a few things about Typhoon, just go to google and type in “Eurofighter Typhoon”, some interesting things will pop up about it, check out the official website, maybe even have a go at contacting Phillip Lee, (External Communications), ask him something, tell him you“don’t believe the Typhoon would offer the level of Superiority over advance Flanker Models from Russia or China.” and you might change your mind about Typhoon, (Personally I don’t think it would, but hey miracles can happen). 😎
Given a free hand unswayed by politics (apart from US refusal to supply the F-22) and industrial offsets, I think that Japan would prefer the Typhoon to any other fighter for the reason cited in my first paragraph.
I agree with you.
Sorry, the Typhoon is not better than a F-35 in the Air Superiority Role.
Bold statement there….
Just because Japan is close to America when it comes to buying military aircraft & what not, doesn’t mean they HAVE to buy American everytime they want something to replace their current equipment. If Typhoon suits their needs & can afford it, then theres no reason why they shouldn’t buy it. Or any other non-American aircraft for that matter.
Apart from the Jaguar you mentioned, Harrier, all marks, can’t think of any reason why the F-35B couldn’t, so that too, and maybe the current and future Gripens to an extent. More of short roads, tarmaced, maybe some rough roads at a push, maybe not too rough of a road, grass feilds, as long as they’re quite flat & smooth…
I heard not so long ago about something of a couple of RAF Tornado GR1’s taking off from motorways in Germany in the 90’s, I can’t come up with any facts about that, but I do know it’s happened with their Jags & Harriers.
“As a followup for discussion, given the current world situation, is this even an issue anymore?”
Yes! Personally I believe so, there has always and always will be a chance of your airfield being taking out by whomever you might be having a punch-up with on a major scale. If your airforce sends up a bunch of Harriers, Gripens to do a mission, while they’re away doing their thing, their runways & base(s) are taken out, so on their way back, they’re going to be thinking where & how to land…Fields, motorways, ASDA carparks etc…
Concerning EF, detailed datum poit out its normal combat radius 1389 km is under such condition:
7 AAMs, one designator pod, 3 paveway bombs, in which we don’t know what’s sort of external fuel tanks it carried, but obviously the designator pod was loaded at one of AAM hardpoint beside inlet and one of three paveway bomb must be loaded centreline under fuselage.
The idea of having the designator pod on one of the AAM hardpoints beside the inlet was droped, (I don’t the know the details why, but I believe that it was just better to load it onto the centre pylon, (Best place to have it), plus, losing one of the AMRAAMS or METEORS in favour of an designator pod stuck into the back of Typhoon pilots minds didn’t help much neither.)
So, two 1500lt (or 1000lt) drop tanks, four paveways, six AAM, (Four AMRAAM’s or METEOR’s and two ASRAAM’s or IRST-T’s) Designator pod on the the centre line hard point, and the 27mm cannon. Thats very impressive if you ask me.
They’ll be such a dual rail on the Gripen NG…

This image is one of a couple taken by a spanish guy during the open day at Moron AFB in December or so. So yes it is recent.
Thanks. Hopefully we can see more such as this one. 🙂
I believe they could also fit a dual rail on each wing to fit AMRAAM or METEOR. An eight METEOR and two ASRAAM configuration for example. Nasty!
Thanks for the replies. Very interesting. 🙂
Isn’t the F 16 equipped with this as well I think the ALE 50. ?
Yeah.

If you ask me, that’s a big bulky of a thing…I was expecting it to be…Smaller…
Is this how a typical RAF QRA departure is conducted? The jet is shown in full QRA fit, at RIAT (Fairford).

Or is it a bit more “tame” 😀
I imagine it is. Very good, a full air to air load with two drop tanks and going straight into the, pretty much, vertical climb. Incredible!!!
Thanks for that. 🙂
Not posted here yet, the Typhoon now has dual missile racks, seen here on a Spanish one. Nice. 😀
I’ve only seen the Typhoon dual missile rack(s) on cutaway drawings, artists impressions, but not on the real thing. Is this picture a recent one? I’m guesing it’s a new feature they now have. Will the other Typhoon operaters also have this feature? I really hope so!
Two Typhoons each with a ten air to air missile (Both with two droptanks) on QRA/CAP….deadly!!! :diablo:
Another thing I was wondering, when they’re deployed & nothing happens, (i.e. nothing is fired at them), can they be “whined back up” into there pod/enclosure or do they just get “severed” & dropped into no-mans land? (Hopefully not dropped into enemy territory for obvious reasons)
oh I dunno about that..
Russian airplanes look brutish, not sexy.
I meant the SU-27/35/37. I should’ve made it clearer. I know how you mean though with those ones. They should’ve called those the;….
“What are you looking at?”,
“I’ll kick you in your little pathetic western groomed peanut b*lls”,
“Did you break my bottle of Black Vodka, worm?”
And,
“I eat bricks…..for fun”. LOL
Tornado GR4 armed with Brimstone Anti Armour missiles and ALARM.
Two Tornado GR1’s armed to the teeth with ALARM.
Bye-Bye airfield defence! :diablo:

Well, a picture can speak a thousand words………:D
Quite right there. 🙂
I’d quite like it to look a lot like that picture in my own little way. 😀
I’m sure it’d be a looker for sure, when it comes to looks, those Russian fighters have it, much like Aston Martin has it for cars. SU-27/35/37….Ooooooooohhh! As Jeremy Clarkson once said; “I get sexualy aroused just by looking at it”. LOL!!!
