why such an “old” plane as F15 , even if its an upgraded one .
As you can see in the photo, the F-15Ks are new builds, and while the design might be old, it is proven, and the weapons it carries as well. Besides, who has helped keep South Korea safe and secure since 1953….
Perhaps asking Piotr Butowski himself would help??
Probably a good idea sooner than later as there probably won’t be too many left to retire in time. 😉
I was always impressed with the RMAF for buying the 29’s and they have used them well and they look great.
I was impressed also with the Thai AF for buying the L-39’s, it showed that countries that had been stuck with limited choices (what ever the US was offering at the time), had faith in what was coming out of the East.
Or that is all they could afford at the time. :p
Thanks for the info Phil. Hope they do make a come back. Would love to see a decent combat flight sim on the F-35.
Dis: Nice Falcon pic mate, is that a real pic? It looks great in the green!
Its real Ja. The proposed A-16 version in a Euro-1 camo if I recall.
Another clearer image of the same.

You can not of course calculate a generic unit cost on one or two deals as there are indeed many factors that could differ from one to the other. But, manufacturers often do release approximate fly-away-per-unit costs when trying to sell their wares. Otherwise, how would anyone be able to determine whether or not they could afford it? These basic fly-away prices are the ones that should be listed, if they can be compiled.
I also recall that you’d recommend the Su-30 for the RNoAF. During an official visit to Russia some years ago, an experienced RNoAF pilot (test pilot?) had the privilege of flying in the backseat of an Su-30, thus receiving a good demonstration of some of the aircraft’s operational capabilities. During a TV-interview conducted after the flight the officer expressed a somewhat positive attitude towards the potential inclusion of the Su-30 as a candidate for the future RNoAF fighter purchase. It doesn’t look like his signals went all the way through, though. I wonder why….
Politics, politics, and politics. In 1944 after Adolf Galland, who was general of the Luftwaffe fighter force then, first flew the Me 262, he then recommended all fighter production be canned in favour of the FW-190 and the Me 262. Did it happen? No.
Also, looks like a variable geometry wing with the hinge in the rear a la the fictional Switchblade. You can see the wing deployed on the second and third pic.
I think they may have based it on the mythical Switchblade. Wasn’t it on the cover of Popular Mechanics magazine a couple of years ago?
The question is not whether they can design a successor to the Eagle but if the Americans will let them. Remember they wanted to design the F-2 themselves but the Americans presured them into taking the basic Viper design with an American engine. So the successor will probably be the Raptor, they can certainly afford it, and the Americans want their unit cost to go down.
In the 80’s the Japanese JDA (Japanese Defence Agency) determined that they could afford to design and build all of the F-2, except the advanced engine. How far have they advanced in engine design and development I wonder?
And yes I am talking about the some what distant future, closer to 2015-20. By then most of the Eagles, despite whatever upgrades happen, will be close to 30 years old.
And on the F/A-22; again that question pops up: Will it be made available?
The manned aircraft RAAF would need for its mission north towards Greater China and as replacement for the F-111 is the Tu-22M3. I’m serious. I’m really serious.
Totally agree, on a purely technical point of view. But there is even LESS chance of the RAAF acquiring Tu-22Ms than there is of acquiring Su-30s! A snow ball’s chance in hell actually…
Google: hahahahaha I love Tiberian Sun and Firestorm, my missus loves Kane, I prefer GDI especially Mac and General Solomon! I hope they make a movie out of it one day using the actual actors in it 😉
That would be cool Ja! James Earl Jones and Michael Biehn are two of them in the Tiberian Sun story.
David, where is the link? 🙁
And of course there is the never ending question of whether or not the F/A-22 will be made available for export. I still doubt it. Of course, the F/A-22 and F-35A would indeed be the ideal combo, and I think even Kopp would have to like that.
Interesting? A country that gave the world F-14’s, F-15’s, F-16’s, and F/A-18’s! I mite add with a kill to loss ratios greater than the world has ever seen! Something like 80+ to 1 combined………..what touted goals have American Aerospace not lived up too? Really, Glenn……you lost me on that one!
Scooter, I am talking about program budgets, and the various promises that we have heard in the past. I don’t feel confident that the F-35 will be delivered at the price promised, and if not, how many of us would be at all surprised? 😉
