    9M96M? What’s that?

    Missiles I know of:

    5V55K: 47km. (S-300PT)

    5V55R: 75km (S-300PS)

    5V55RUD: 90km (S-300PMU)

    48N6/48N6E: 150km (S-300PM/S-300PMU1)

    48N6E2: 200km (S-300PMU2 ‘Favorit’)

    9M96/9M96E: 40km (S-400)
    9M96E2: 120km (S-400)
    40N6: 400km (S-400)
    48N6DM: 150km? (S-400)

Is 9M96M the designation for the Russian version of 9M96E2? I thought that was 9M96/2? Is there a non-export version of 48N6E2?

Have to admit first I have heard of it too; the 9M96 that is. Where is a current copy of Janes Land-based Air defence when you need one? Mine is a ’95-’96 edition.

The Cruiser Petr Veliky is currently fitted with S-300FM Fort-M which uses the 150km-range 48N6 missile. I wonder if they might consider a further upgrade?

    Google, nice post mate. 🙂

Finally got a picture of the definitive interceptor version…

Can’t knock the Russians for lacking ambition, thats for sure. Even the Mach 3 North American F-108 “Rapier” wasn’t as radical. What kind of speed was the Mikoyan 701 meant to obtain?

well, that’s not entirely since their cars are vastly superior to American ones, and who do they imitate for that?

Fair enough Google, the Japanese will either take a concept and improve upon it or copy it.

What’s with your constantly changing avatar, Glenn?

Just trying to find one that works for me. 🙂

Also in Golden Eye the Mig-29s were supposedly destroyed by an EMP. Of course that particular model of Mig-29 has normal control systems with computer systems built in for the manouver limitation system. There are manual reversion channels that could be used. Also EMP bursts don’t make radars and computers explode… they just stop working.

At least the Tiger Helo scenes were cool though. 🙂

Still that is pretty much the technique of the SLAM and SLAM-ER, which uses a man in the loop system with infra red imaging, and GPS/inertial navigation in the midphase. The SLAM-ER is the Navy’s only current SOAD weapon (a weird acronym that stands for Stand off Outside Area Defense system). The acronym pretty much speaks for itself. SLAM-ER has a range of 250km.

    I am aware of that.

Kh-59ME with 285km and a new datalink pod, could pretty much act as a SOAD device. I don’t see that much vulnerability for the launcher if you stand off 285km from the target.

Vulnerability is entirely dependant on the surrounding environment at the time. The target might be tucked inside a SAM belt or defended by fighter aircraft flying CAP, or if at sea, protected by AAW vessels on picket duty with long range SAMs, or even carrier-borne fighters on BARCAP. At max. range the subsonic flight time of the missile might feel like a life time if hostiles are not far away.

If you consider a Taiwan scenario, the MKK could launch a 285km missile even before it ever passes the coast, while over home territory. The distance across the straits is only 100 to 140km. So yes, the MKK could shoot those missiles right over home territory beyond reach of SAMs (the longest ranged ROC SAM is the 160km Sky king2 or Tienkung 2) and beyond range of ROC interceptors. These interceptors would have to interdict the MKK right over the mainland, and doing that well exposes the ROC defenders to the S-300s and HQ-9s lined up along the coast.

Obviously this is not the scenario that I was thinking of. The missile’s max. stand of range would indeed enbale launch-to-impact with the parent fighter well inside friendly territory. OTOH, subsonic cruise missiles flying fairly high prior to their terminal phase would not be that hard to shoot down for the ROC.

Unfortunately this is just the ammo G.W.Bush needs to be able to throw billions into the somewhat dubious NMD program.

Some might get me for this, but I thought Memphis Belle was good, and indeed Flight of the Intruder. Also, By Dawn’s Early Light (I think?) was a great WW3 flick centered around a B-52 crew.

The F-32 never was. The Boeing JSF was only ever known as X-32 in the fly off IIRC.

but hold it ( Midland’s Aerofax series has announced the missing work again by Yefim Gordon and Vladimir Rigamant around June 2004 for GBP 20 – talk about timing !! The duo had also written the earlier work on the Tu22/Tu22Mx in the same series which I found to be good except on the combat operational data which is quite suspect at times.

Saw this in their Spring ’04 catalogue and it should be good I think (The Aerofax series usually is), but one has to wonder about how much operational data they can actually get their hands on. And how much is expansion upon educated speculation.

Figures I have seen for the Kh-101 gives it a lanuch weight of 2.2-2.4 tons, and the weight of the Kh-59M is less under a ton. So I wonder how much MORE fuel the long range cruise missile carries over the ASM.

The Japanese thought the same about F16… Boy they were wrong cause it was bottum again… And even more cash… So why LCA2?

Well hopefully the Indians won’t have to subsidise a foreign partner for 40% of the development and construction like the Japanese did with the Americans on the F-2. All of an MCA will hopefully stay in India.

isnt AL-31F bigger..kind of in different category..if they ditch Kaveri..they cannot fit AL-31F in LCA..and even if they manage..LCA wont be LCA anymore…more like MCA.

Just think. Boost the LCA’s size by 30%, add the AL-31F, and boom: instant MCA.
