That’s the one!
(I thought the George’s cross on the landing strip was rather subtle myself)
How can they buy a ship that’s been sunk three times?
They should buy Invincible and fit an angled deck for STOBAR
:dev2::dev2::dev2::dev2::dev2::diablo::dev2:
Brilliant, cheers.
I got the beam about right, and you got the length so between us we were spot on! lol.
Questions to further my research/illustration project:
Any pics of Atlantic Causeway post modification?
Any schematics or near-plan-view photos of 25 de Mayo as she was at the time of the Falklands? Photos of her show that at some time the port landing deck was extended and landing angle made less acute. But was this before/after the war?
Thanks for the great info. My own estimates are probably close (I’m the first of the metric generation so I’d have to get my calculator out to double check what 636ft is).
Here’s my estimate based on photos. It’s probably wrong in many respects but I think it’s close enough to illustrate the versitility of the Harrier.

I’d agree.
Re Atlantic Conveyor? No one any length/beam stats?
Don’t worry, it’s powered by gasturbines anyway 😀
Is it? Cool much better than Sovs then.
I wouldn’t want the liability of the Steam powerplant but something like this would be a decent upgrade IMO.

cheers for the info.
Re the “small carriers”. Can anyone tell me the length and beam of the Atlantic Conveyor? And has anyone got any photos of the Atlantic Causeway with its ski-jump? or the Ro-ro Agostino Neto?
… you can see where I’m going..
so far I have Wasp, Invincible, Cavour, Juan Carlos I, Principe de Asturias, Garibald, Chakri Naruebet and Viraat.
Mistral, Ocean, Dokdo and HyÅ«ga might yet make it as a “could be” category. USS America maybe too but info on her seems very sketchy. The ‘official’ pics show it as just a Wasp with no well deck. Even the radars seem in line with Wasp.
Four ordered/in service. Uses the HEW-784 radar, a modified APS-784 (which is the normal maritime search radar used on their ASW Merlins.
V.cool. Do you know the in-service designation/any photos to prove it?
{trotts off to adjust STOVL carrier comparison essay}
That we know of………….;)
and so ends the ‘reality’ debate with a comment that dovetails nicely with the second post in this thread. 😀
Cheers. Derby to replace Sea Eagle. Cool 😉
Italy and Spain are two countries who have build some modern helo carriers but haven’t went on to built something significantly larger.
Actually the Spanish Juan Carlos I design is about 27,000 tons and Italy’s Cavour is 30,000 tons. That’s pretty close to CDG and although they’ve chosen a STOVL config (they are both Harrier operators and intend to use the F-35B), they could have built modest CTOL/STOBAR carriers similar to India’s planned carriers.
I think the answer is “no” simply because both are democratic countries that don;t build major warships in secret, so if they were thinking in that direction we’d have heard IMO.
A lot of people are suggesting that F-35Bs will transform the Dokdo (SK) or Hyuga (Jpn) into carriers but these are no-where near the scale of the Chinese carriers. Having said that, if it does ever happen I think that despite the pocket non-optimal carrier’s inherent limitations, the combination of the F-35B and the ROK/JMSDF pilots would be a good match for PLAN Su-33s.
