    Boeing engineers are using 3-D printing to aid in rapid prototyping efforts. 3-D printing is similar to that of a standard inkjet printer. A computer generated 3-D model is sent to the printer, which divides it into extremely thin cross sections. A powder is layered across each cross section at a rate of one vertical inch per hour. Teams across Boeing are using 3-D printing in a plethora of ways, including fit check models, shop aids, tool mock-ups and visualization models.

    What is the application in this clip used in modeling?

    …has a more significant endurance :
    (from wikipedia) (what should we do without it ? 🙂 ;

    The AeroVironment Global Observer is a concept for a high-altitude, long endurance unmanned aerial vehicle, designed by AeroVironment (AV) to operate as a stratospheric geosynchronous satellite system with regional coverage.

    Two Global Observer aircraft, each flying for up to a week at an altitude of 55,000 to 65,000 feet (17,000 to 20,000 m), could alternate coverage over any area on the earth, providing a platform for communications relays, remote sensing, or long-term surveillance.

    In addition to flying above weather and above other conventional aircraft, operation at this altitude permits communications and sensor payloads on the aircraft to service an area on the surface of the earth up to 600 miles (970 km) in diameter, equivalent to more than 280,000 square miles (730,000 km2) of coverage. Global Observer may offer greater flexibility than a satellite and longer duration than conventional manned and unmanned aircraft.

    friendly yours, Etienne

    But considering the size, it is somehow logical. It is almost medium aircraft (Wing Span: 175 feet, Length: 70 feet). In addition it’s load is only 180 Kg and do not forget it is a US technology. We are talking about a new county in the field with a reasonable sized UAV and 1000 Kg of load.

    THough it would be very humorous if this was actually just a mockup of the real thing, which was flying and much larger.

    Iranian media has mentioned that this is just a mockup and the video is an RC model, yet “ahmadinejad said the aircraft was designed and built in iran, and was test-flown for “thousands of hours” by pilots who are “very satisfied with its performance.”
