Hmmmmm go to “DX” to watch the sports day torch ~ or stay home an get on with the ironing ……
The ironing won folks ! :diablo:
What a shame this thread’s not about “late teen” Spitfires :diablo:

This was taken as an “aide memoir” in July 2010 at Rudy Frasca’s hangar
Maybe there’s a correlation between the expectation of Legends and England in Euro 2012.
This year’s football team is not the same team that won the World Cup in 1966. We understand that we won’t be seeing Bobby Charlton and Co playing if we watched any of the recent matches because the past is the past.
Similarly many of the warbirds we’ve seen and enjoyed previously are either elsewhere now or no longer with us ( e.g. B-17 Liberty Belle & B-25 Russell’s Raiders )
So my approach to each Flying Legends is to forget what came previously and rejoice in what attends this time.
If there every comes a time when there isn’t another Legends to look forward to and you’re passionate about warbirds ~ the annual pilgrimage will be to places far further flung and not the historically significant setting that is Duxford Airfield. 🙂
I took this shot on Saturday from the Friends of The Fighter Collection enclosure 🙂
I’ve tweaked it in Photoshop to loose both the Piper in the background and the mast :diablo:

If you’re still undecided about going to Flying Legends this weekend ~ maybe this will help you make a decision 🙂

DCW will be wending his way home right now ~ following a necessary diversion for food and fluids 🙂
Hopefully an update should be along later this evening !
In the mean time ~ I can offer only one snap from today …..

The Flying Bulls awesome P-38 Lightning catches the late afternoon rays of sunshine thru the open hangar door and a precious moment in time for me is captured as an image to share 🙂
TFC engineers beavering away yesterday afternoon in preparation for this weekend Flying Legends Air Show

It’s a race against time Brian ~ will we arrive at “DX” this morning before it does 😮
It was rather yummy !
Perhaps we should have paused and taken pictures before scoffing it so we could share them here 🙂
You captured some really nice images today David !
The Blenheim looks even better going back to Hangar 3 against that dramatic sky than it did on Friday
That’ll teach me to loaf around at home ’til lunch time 😮

I’m always amazed and a bit saddened at so much negativity. And people with an axe to grind are always the quickest the trot out the lame excuse that they have a right to be less than flattering about the hard work going on right now in preparations for the greatest wardbird show in Europe.
Please bear in mind the one group who cannot say what THEY think.
THEY are bound by confidentially from saying anything !
THEY are the ones either working or volunteering today ~ in some cases having got up at some ungoldly hour to drive 2 hours to get to Duxford.
THEY are the ones who are beavering away right now to present the best show they can ~ but receive so little thanks from the audience.
And THEY read forums like this ……
And right now I’m going to see how THEY are getting on 🙂
What will be you’re CONTRIBUTION today ?
The B-17 parts group mentioned is the B-17 Co-operative ~ which meets once a year to discuss common themes and needs. It’s primary function is I believe to keep the airworthy one flying. I don’t have contact details I’m afraid ……
I do know that spare airworthy tail wheel tires are in such short supply that the Liberty Foundation sought and obtained design approval to manufacture and use a new tail wheel unit that would take a standard Boeing 737 nose wheel tire.
With FAA approval ~ the design was then offered to other B-17 groups at the next B-17 Co-op meeting …..
Good hunting with your quest to find one though 🙂
There has been a rival product on the market ~ namely the SEABIRD SBL-7-360 Seeker ……

I saw it at Oshkosh 2008 and the chap looking after it said that yes the front section originates from the Gazelle helicopter with a wing / tail and engine grafted on.
The Iraqi’s have had two in military service for observation
More info on the manufacturers website …..

Keen observers will have noted the prop clearance with the tail boom is
on the sporty side of close !
I would have also thought that having come to the attention of HM Customs ~ it would have to remain on an airport with a Customs presence until either the import duties were paid or it was processed to fly out of the country or …… it was reduced to scrap on site.
I’ve always assumed therefore that at the end of filming ~ the two B-17’s that remained in England never left Manston.
🙂
Well it was REALLY windy out there yesterday 🙂
