Checking with the 398th people to see if Lt. Bowen is still with us to ask directly.

Hope you enjyed your return visit to Nuthampstead… if you venture up the A10 again for another visit PM me, and I’ll arrange an airfield tour.

I need to correct my earlier postings…

    ..and here’s my opportunity!

I made a case for suggesting all 55th FG P-51’s had red stripes. Quack, quack, ooops! How wrong was I?!

I can now say that I have colour photo proof that some 55th Mustangs had yellow borders around the anti-glare panel. Those more observant of you probably noted this with TFC’s ‘Miss Velma’. Frank Birtciel has been adamant for some time that his memory was still good on this and ‘Miss Velma’ had a yellow stripe. I shouldn’t have doubted Frank’s memory!

    So…back to ‘Da Quake’…

I would like to correct my earlier observation and suggest the border was in fact yellow as was being argued at the time of the previous thread. Belated apologies from yours truly!

The other interesting thing is this is a real oditity of a colour scheme, as it’s the only non-343rd FS P-51 I have seen with a 343rd FS colour scheme. The veterans I have spoken with have discussed this and the only answer they could come up with (for why McGinn had a 338th plane in 343rd colours), was that he liked the scheme and being the CO he chose to copy it. Sounds plausible to me.

I know this a/c changed hands a short while back…anybody know if the new owner is keen to get it restored any time soon? Being greedy, but having another 55th Mustang scheme in the UK would be fantastic (regardless whether it’s painted as Kester’s, or Gevorkian’s P-51), especially as it’s got provenance.

Nuthampstead had tarmac laid over concrete. The early surface had wood shavings in the tarmac (!?!?) and the P-38’s Allison’s sucked it up into the radiator housings.

According to a pilot the tarmac was very slippery.

    Graham,

I hadn’t missed the point at all. I was making the very same point you have eloquently typed out in somewhat of an essay….

I was simply making the additional point that making a statement on a public forum saying “like the fact that Roger Freeman wrote ‘The Mighty Eighth’ using Press and Propaganda handouts” is a little theatrical and unwarranted in my opinion (just my opinion, before you dwell on that statement).

I am sure you have adequate material and research to show that Roger may well have used PR material to assist him in his research, but he also used material from other sources by your own admission.

I’m not being critical of your work, or your research, I am simply saying, let people read your book and make their own minds up. Roger isn’t here to defend himself and I’m not here to do that for him, I am saying please be aware of the impact your statements will make, when they are read in isolation and without further explanation.

As for inaccuracies…I have found dozens in my forthcoming book, and I’m correcting them frequently…every new bit of information that arrives contradicts another established ‘fact’. You have my sympathies in that respect.

I wish you well with the book and I know you and your fellow author have had a rough time because of your discoveries and revelations…I’m not adding to that grief, I am offering advice as to how to avoid more.

    Graham,

I admire anybody who researches a subject matter to the depth that you have, but I don’t think you need to use cheap shots against a well respected author.

I know a part of what you are hinting at (from a person well linked to Bassingbourn), but I don’t see any value in pointing out other authors’ apparent shortcomings or inaccuracies.

I have found dozens of errors in various books and publications, but I don’t go upsetting the authors in a public forum.

Let’s celebrate your book and perhaps over time you can challenge other people’s work in a more constructive manner (as I am sure you have in your forthcoming book).

That aside, I’m looking forward to your book, it promises to be a good read.

It was Dave Kingshott’s, was it not?

Anybody any idea where it might be? Being a 55th FG Mustang I have a particular interest.

    Brian,

Noted….I stand corrected. My usual line of research is the USAAF and they often used KIAc to mean Killed in Action – Crashed, hence my use of terminology.

Thought the forum would like to see what was left of one of the engines…photo was sent to me recently…

I’m in Braughing and they flew over the village North bound. I’m guessing they were marking events up in London (?) and using the slim gap between Luton and Stansted airspace, along the A10/B1368. They were definately Tornados…couldn’t quite make out the special scheme on one of the tails…

For the last several years I’ve been trying to restore a Sperry lower ball turret in my basement. I have most of the internal parts except for some minor bits and a missing azimuth gearbox. The frustrating part is trying to find those shell pieces which were melted down after the war for their aluminum. I have some scrap shell pieces which are bent and broken, an ammo can door, as well as the armoured seat assembly but that’s about it for shell pieces.

    I’m sure there’s plenty of photos out there…but here’s my contribution…

Fantastic to see a 55th FG scheme in the UK. Congrats to all those involved.
