good report Ken, I did a trip to Russia last year (with another company) and had similar weather ! – although the MAKS show at Zhukovsky was a sunny day.
Chernoye is very interesting – loads of AN2 & Mil2 awaiting overhaul. Shame to hear that the AN2 ekranoplane is in storage there – it raised a few comments when it was at the 2003 show
Steve,
I only had an expedia number + was not 100% certain that I would be allowed to take both bags as cabin luggage
If we are talking about first flights as well then I can just about remember coming back from Palma on a Comet, presumably Dan Air, in Jan 1970. We had suffered a 7 hour delay at Palma because of fog (i think) and can recall the torn hessian type material below the window and seeing the lights of Palma receed as we departed – I then fell asleep. (i was only 4)
11 Feb 1978 coming back from Palma on British Caledonian Bac1-11, my younger sister screaming the whole flight as she had picked up an ear infection during the holiday and the cabin pressure was agony for her.
We even got to spend an extra night in Palma as a result of an ATC strike.
Michael,
I will upload them onto Jetphotos in the next couple of weeks – I have a few window shots and some from both viewing areas, I just hope they get accepted!
Do people still want a copy of “Mitchells do fly in IMC’ ? – as I would be happy to oblige (or has it been obtained from others)
Todd,
I visited the Langley museum in 1999, good to see the Hampden in a much better condition now – keep up the good work
Yes – United had the SP (ex Pan Am ones) but they did not operate the 747-300 so do not qualify as operating all types of 747.
How about the Beriev WA114 Bertolini – pics on airliners.net
I, Robot was good – slightly obvious storyline but with a twist or 2. Funny in places, effects good
How about Richard E Grant or Ewan Mcgregor
BA has never operated the 747SP either – in fact very few airlines have operated all 747 types. (only SAA, Saudia,Qantas & Korean I think)
dcfly,
try http://www.kempinski-airport.de/ or email info@kempinski-airport.de
hope this helps
Dave,
I am going there this weekend! – (staying in the Kempinski at the airport)
My last visit there was in 1994 and the facilities were good. There is a purpose built spotting hill close to one of the runways which has its own S-Bahn station. The hill gives good views but is in the open and so if the weather is bad then is not a good idea. Also at the hill there are 3 preserved aircraft (Ju52/DC3/L1049) and ramp tours are available. There is also a viewing area in the recently opened Terminal 2 which will
be investigated. The airport does have its own website which is a good source of info.
hope this is of use
I have been lucky enough to hear a gentleman by the name of **** Straton talk about his time at Saunder’s Roe – he was the development flight engineer on the Princess and mentioned a few interesting facts i.e. the prop blades were bent on the first flight by water hitting them and as the replacement blades took a while to get, it flew with the bent ones for a while. I also seem to remember being told that the control surfaces were moved by a very simple ‘electro-hydraulic’ system – a early and successful attempe at ‘fly-by’wire’
