Today is also the 59th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Nagasaki

As Saunders Roe were based on the Isle of Wight I think it was lost in the Solent
Not forgetting the Miles M52 aircraft that was likely to be the first to break the sound barrier with a British pilot (Eric Brown I believe) We gave it away to the Americans who promptly classified it and refused to share any info. The flying tail aspect of the design was critical in allowing the Bell X-1 to go supersonic.
I use the TAHS Airline fleets but also have a computer based system which I get monthly updates for and is excellent. (almost 30,000 reg’s on that system to date)
I have signed up for it a while ago and received the card within a few days.
Not sure of the benefits yet as I am not a regular visitor to Heathrow but if it helps police determine that I am not a threat then I am all for it. However there are a couple of points to consider :
a) what level of security check is done ?
b) people will consider it a ‘rip off’ if there is no visible benefit to having one
c) spotters will still congregate in the known areas regardless of the card.
Unfortunately if the UK did swop to driving on the right – most of the cars would still be the same – visibility for overtaking would be very poor leading to more accidents.
Also roundabouts are designed to encourage people to go in a particular direction ie left and to alter all such junctions would be very expensive. Roadsigns would have to be relocated etc.
Sweden did swop in 1965? but at the time they had much less traffic.
Most of the places that still drive on the left are either islands such as UK, Japan, Australia or are isolated from other countries by geographic feature (thinking of India and Himalaya’s)
Anybody notice the 3 ex My Travel DC10’s at Kemble appear in the background on Top Gear last night?
only 2 Melvyn but they were big ones 😉 (5 gal each i think) Took a team of 8 about 6 hours to paint the fuselage with 1 coat. Rudder + elevator had been re-covered so took 2 coats to get a decent result.
Rudder was painted first (by me) in a cage like contraption combined with forklift to get the height, owner turns up, was impressed with rudder but it made the rest look shabby……6 hours later one freshly painted fuselage (wings had already been done)
We were then lucky enough to go for a taxi round the airfield and fast run down runway – a real treat.
Very sad to see her go from Lee-on-Solent, myself and several other have spent a bit of time working on her during the last few month, including a complete repaint (by hand) the weekend before the D-Day events.
As Melvyn says the other DC3 at Lee is an Arnham and D-Day veteran and has a couple of small patched covering holes made by small arms from that period. Another visitor to Lee is Auster 5 (G-BJBJ i think) which was also an Arnham veteran.
How did SOU get on that list ?? – the car park is a non starter as anybody up there is in full view of the tower & terminal and will soon get chased off. The viewing area inside is small and shooting through tinted glass is always tricky. The range of companies / aircraft is not exactly vast either.
Can somebody tell the PFA those dates so they can avoid a clash with Legends again!
The UK may be more pro-european if we had been allowed to join at the same time rather than having our entry vetoed by De Gaulle. He only relented when policies like the CAP were in place and it was too late to do much about it. The unfairness of the CAP is still a major problem but little has been done to reform it because of whom it would effect the most. (ie french farmers)
As you may know the UAE is made up of several different Emirates – some of which are dry (Sharjah) and others which are not (Dubai) It is not unusual to see the hotel bars in Dubai full of arabs having a drink or 3 particularly if they come from a ‘dry’ emirate.
You may be using a filename that already exists and the system should not let you upload it. Try renaming to something more descriptive ie include a/c reg or date taken to make the filename unique
Steve,
