Swiss MD11 to Bangkok still in service.;)
That’s great info,QatarA330, and really appreciated:D
Good point!
Back in December I was on a Philippine Airlines 734 about to leave Puerto Princesa. The aircraft I was aboard was a couple of years old. Out of the window I saw a 732 of Air Philippines , the oldest operating aircraft of its type. Guess which one I was happy to be aboard?
Wys, you know I am a great admirer of your insight and views expressed here, but are your comments regarding MYT’s problems really valid?
Certainly aircraft (or any vehicles) go “tech”, but is there not a connection between service/maintenance/age that causes these problems?
I really only know about boats, but what I do know is that the newer ones, or the older one’s that have an efficient and non-cost controlled service programme tend not to leave me wallowing about 100 miles offshore.
Thanks everybody, there are some interesting comments. First, just to fly 747 is indeed an experience, and a good one, but I think I would choose 777 unless you seek the security of four engines. Personally, (and my wife feels the same) I would be happy to fly on the LH 747 every time for the reasons I have expressed in the past (not perfect, but professional and well maintained).
I have a worry about the KLM combi, (as far as service and competence go, I have no doubts), but if I am sat at the back and we have a medium grade accident on take off or landing, where are those pallets going to end up?
We (not Royal – I mean my wife and I ) have flown all the airsraft I mentioned, but I was keen to get your thoughts.
Qatar A330, you definitely tempt me, because we already enjoy our flights on PAL from MNL to PPS by A330. Only problem is the connections in Doha which mean a long stop one way and overnight going back. But Qatar Airways are certainly building a good reputation.
So which will it be? Well it is all down to the price, we would like to do the trip in October and again in January, but to do this we have to go for the lowest cost without totally compromising comfort.
I’ll keep you posted,
Thanks!
🙂
Steve, is that because its got four engines and built like a brick dunny?:D
Yes, Britten-Norman (now Omani owned) still going strong at Bembridge. I’m on the other side of the Island and enjoy seeing those proper little aircraft go over, see lots more at higher flight levels as I’m close to the Needles and obviously on a major route.:)
Well, living on an Island is a problem. We lived on Mallorca for 16 years and I vowed never to live on an Island again – but here we are! It’s nice though.
Other than getting to SOU for an early departure, no air link could better the ferry in practical and economic terms – RedJet (fast ferry to Southampton from Cowes) cost £8.30 return takes 23mins, then 15mins (depending on traffic) in Taxi at cost of £12. Alternatively, take the free bus to the rail station and a very short train ride to the airport.
Mind you, I wish there were an Islander/Trislander link so I could fly in one instead of just seeing them passing overhead on their way to Saab 2000 land!
I’m not going to be led into that one! I suspect that whatever aircraft I find with more seats, someone will find more. Maybe a Herc flying pax for example?;)
On the FlyBe site they are showing Alicante (and Malaga) in Nov/Dec for £39 one way, but no sign of BCN.
Yes, its good not to have to go to London – in fact I could fly AF SOU – MNL, but the problem is it’s a 0630 flight from So’ton. Not to easy to make without a hotel , which would negate the advantages.:(
Sorry, I’m not familiar with “Mega Dash”, but thats probably it. An example, which I’ve travelled on twice is G-JEDI (easy to remember), DHC-8-401Q Dash 8.
This year I’ve flown a number of times to Milan – Bergamo from Southampton with FlyBe. I think its the most enjoyable route I’ve flown. With good weather conditions the route over the Channel and eventually the Alps is delightful and the small airports each end ensure no hassle check-in and arrival.
Yes, I know the cost of refreshments on board is high, but the Ckicken Tikka wrap is excellent.
In Bergamo, walk across the road at the airport to the Orio Mall for excellent shopping, or catch the shuttle bus into Milan.
On top of all this, its a nice aircraft.
No, I’m not employed by FlyBe as a PR man – just enjoyed my trips with them!:D
Thats not so bad. Do I spot the obligatory salad “guarnacion” hiding in the corner?
Serious comment though – as one who tries to enjoy his airline food (my wife would say ANY food) , providing a photo of the actual meal is a great addition to the flight report. I’ll try to do the same for my next trip to MNL.
Ah! What memories! That cold snack reminds me of a breakfast I had on a Centennial flight PMI – LGW some years ago; Sliced tomato, sliced hard boiled egg, and a roll. No tengo gordo!;)
Yes, a very handy reference. I think KLM might actually be 31″ – certainly on the Far East flights using Combi’s.
Thanks for taking the trouble to post the info.:)
