Apologies for bringing this old thread back but I would be very interested in any details on this recovery and sight of any available photos of T8827’s rear fuselage.
Kind regards,
Tim
Last one and I’ll leave you all alone for a while 🙂
This looks like what was a small flat alloy cover plate 11cm x 3cm held in place by 8 rivets or screws. On the underside are 4 locating prongs (one has broken away). The part number appears to be 717 but I can’t be absolutely sure that this is complete. The word ‘PATENT’ also appears with what weems to be a number below it which is unreadable.
There’s also a very nice verifier’s stamp with a crown and the letters A.M. 27N/18
Cheers again

Hello Hennie,
Your mystery item is the backing plate from a Graviner 27N/18 flame switch. Located in the engine bay to detect fire and activate the extinguishers, the Miles Martinet had two located on the firewall but one assumes these were fitted on numerous types. The period advert details the unit in the bottom right.

Tim,
If leather is an option perhaps a gents leather belt would provide sufficient material ? Cut to correct size, drill both ends and fix with plate washers.
Hello John,
Yes something along these lines would be suitable, I have the metal attachment lugs and these would just need to be attached to the replacement straps by three rivets and then reattached to the pedal casting.
Thanks
Tim
Hi Tim, were the originals Dunlop or Palmer?
Rob
Hi Rob,
The AP Schedule of Spare Parts has the item listed as Strap, toe Part Number A13141 which would appear to make it a bespoke Miles part. As such this limits the availability and a pragmatic solution may well be a leather or modern rubber strap.
Kind regards,
Tim
John / OneEighthbit,
Thank you for your replies and suggestions, it would appear that leather is an option and I will explore this in the short term.
Kind regards,
Tim
Hi Rob,
She is certainly coming on leaps and bounds at the moment and the panel looks fantastic I will be writing to you regarding the Letraset as may need some myself soon.
Keep up the great work.
Tim
Alan,
Thanks fingers crossed and I will drop you a line in a few days.
Tim
What is it actually for or from, Tim? Someone (possibly myself) may have one fitted to something that we can “pinch” it off.
Anon
Hello Anon,
I am in the process of restoring my Miles Martinet control box and, as per the attached AP extract item 2, this micro switch sounds the undercarriage horn if the legs are not locked down.

Thanks Bruce that is appreciated – typical that it is unusual…..
Tim
Andy,
Thanks for the link that is the one but as you say ‘not cheap’, has anyone got one knocking around a spares box by any chance?
Kind regards,
Tim
Whilst not wanting thread creep I would be very interested in seeing any photos of the Martinets early restoration at the MBA.
Tim
Hi Rob,
Yes indeed the team at MBA have been very helpful and welcoming it is a smashing museum and Ian Simmons has been a great help with my wee efforts. MM thanks for the photos they certainly illustrate what has been achieved.
Tim
Hi Rob,
MS902, post war, formed part of the Icelandic flying club and I believe this is her Icelandic civil registration.
However I stand to be corrected.
Tim
The Martinet looks absolutely fantastic, congrats to all involved.
Hi Rob,
I look forward to seeing her in the flesh – she is a real beast.
