When you find out you will need to edit the Wiki then.

What is the source of your information that contradicts its use only for maintenance?

On 24 March 1950, 3 Czech DC3, landed at Erding having escaped from Czechoslovakia. A detailed account is here:

    http://fcafa.wordpress.com/2011/03/12/they-flew-to-exile-1950/

Vit Angetter the pilot of the 1st DC3 to land, explained to Col. Park Holland, the US base commander about the other 2 DC3’s, and US fighter aircraft were scrabbled from Erding. This was seen by Angetter who was a former fighter pilot. They escorted the 3rd DC3, flown by my father, back to Erding and the US fighters also landed at Erding.

To scramble aircraft, in for maintenance, for possible combat again Russian fighters would be precarious.

Also the Czech ex-RAF airmen were initially kept at Erding and talked to the US escort pilots, during that talk it was confirmed their role at Erding was as combat pilots.

In March 1950 a USAF fighter unit was based there and it is the aircraft they flew that I am interested in.

    Excellent news

For future reference for other readers perhaps you would care to elaborate on route/procedure involved to get your grandfather his medals.

It is possible that by contacting the relevant Veteran section, within that link that you achieve some useful advice/suggestions from other Polish veterans.

    Hi

As you are refering to Polish Air Force medals I would suspect that it is not the the MOD in UK that you need to contact but the Polish equvalent or Air force in Poland.

“I suppose we could also explore the theory that his Spitfire was abducted by aliens” – I thought that was still classified information!

“Hi Stormbird – Yes, any debris above ground would have been collected as scrap by the Germans; what was under the surface would have been left there. Of course at the time these crashed aircraft had no intrinsic or other value”

Truespeaker – would you consider the same would be true if Galland/the Germans were aware that it had been Baders plane?
