Here is a story about Jak-23 and Mig-15 briefly flown in Yugoslavia.

Romanian Pilot Mikhail Dijakonu has defected on 24.06.1953 to Yugoslavia in a Jak-23 airplane and asked for asylum. News about this even was published whole 35 days later. Some time later an Mig-15 (number 25) from Hungary landed in Yugoslavia as its pilot got dissorianted.

Jak-23 was in superb condition while Mig-15 got its left landing gear and left wing tip damaged due to emergency landing. In biggest secrecy Mig-15 was repaired and was handed over to VOC that tested its flight characteristics together with Jak-23. These airplanes were flown by Captains Vodopivec (on Jak 17 flights lasting 8,27hrs, on Mig 6 flights lasting 2,4hrs) and Todorovic (on Jak 3 flights lasting,14 hrs and 3 flights on Mig lasting 1,56hrs) while Captain Prebeg flew only on Jak-23(1 flight of 20min). Saved data show that weaponary was also tested. Jak was soon after dissasembled and sent to USA in crates. The airplane was handed over to the Americans and was tested in Wright-Peterson AB in Ohio and was subsequently returned by C-124 Globemaster to its β€œrightfull owner in Eastern Europe”.

As long as 40 years these flight tests have stayed a sescret to the american air force history.

Ahhhhhhh! That’s why I thought there was more than one. Were the Mig-21Bis used at all?

I am not sure if they were ever flown but they were most certanly used for spare parts.

So the agreement was to overhaul only one MiG-23? That doesn’t make sense. I was under the impression that there were more migs that came over to be overhauled.

Along Mig-23 also 4 Mig-21Bis were sent for overhaul. This was just a first batch and more airplanes were to follow if the events in 1991 didnt happen.

Ok enough for today. Laku noc!

Now here are some photos of Mig-29s in 1989 at Brnik Airport,Ljubljana-Slovenia just to bring some nice memories about these airplanes. Two years after their introduction to service with Yugoslav AF and two years before they started combat air patrols over then, hostile Slovenia ( πŸ™ )

    Of course i do!

The airplane was briefly tested by Yugoslav Air Force pilots from the Test and Research Cente (VOC) at the end of 1960s.It is still unclear how the airplane was obtained, although some stories tell that it was obtained directly from Russia. It was tested and an evaluation was to be made if it will be acquired for Yugoslav Air Force.Instead of obtaining Mig-19,Yugoslav Air Force opted for muc better Mig-21.

And as a bonus, you get several photos of Trumpeters model in 1/48 scale!

P.S: I also have photos and info about Jak-23 that defected from Romania(24.07.1953) and Mig-15 from Hungary that were both tested by VOC.

If it was overhauled then why didn’t they put it in service?

    Iraq or Serbia?

Well in 1991 Iraq was attacked and as of that moment was under both economics sanctions and arms embargo.

In 1991 the problems in ex Yugoslavia started and the airplane was flown only a hanfull of times as there were plenty of other airplanes pulled away from other ex-YU countries in Serbia at the time.It does not pay off to fly a single example of an airplane type in an airforce that had numerous other airplanes already. Mig-23 did not bring any advantage.

Just a single Mig-23. As far as I know it hasn’t flown for years. Now it’s just sitting at the museum.

Does anyone know, did that Mig-23 ever receive the overhaul it was supposed to get?

It was overhauled of course and shown to the Iraqi delegation in 1991. A Serbian AF flag was applied to the airplane while at Batajnica AB.

As i have heard, after the Desert Storm and the worsening situation in Yugoslavia at the time, the airplane was flown several times by Serbian pilot and was grounded finally when there was no more reason to keep it airworthy.

Thanks god after 19 years they have had finaly and overhaul. Hey does anybody know a bit more on the history of the mig 29s that serbia has in russian service beacuse i know they were used for 3 years in russia the mig 29s before.

I think that they were only used briefly and then stored for a long time until delivered to Yugoslavian Air Force in the 1987.

Here is a photo of R-73 tested at Moma Stanojlovic facility.

    [QUOTE=flex297
R-95Sh engines were one of the most peculiar ones in their class, they were running smoothly on trash and bargain fuels, including acetone, oil paintings, petrol, diesel, thinners, burnt cooking oil or other recycled inflammable stuff. Just beautiful for war conditions..[/QUOTE]

I guess the Russian stole the engine plans from the car from “Back to the future” movie:)

Wow oil paintings and trash,i am impressed. But the engine life span had to suffer right?

I got this ultimately expensive resin kit by Collect-Aire (yes, it is 1/48) and it is just too precious to start πŸ˜‰ I cannot find enough courage to make the first cut.. πŸ˜‰

I only work with resin parts when i am adding details sets to an airplane model. Lately i have done these from scratch.

Ah come on,make the beauty. It will look much better displayed than in the box:) And you can open the bomb bay;)
