Last I heard a private company was looking to build a new Port in San Carlos Bay, initially just to supply the fledgling oil industry. Every month that passes it looks more likely that the area is slowly becoming a new oil province which will mean expansion of the ports, airport, road network, industrial sites, housing, communications etc.
I have no doubt that once that happens a small incremental increase in the number of local naval vessels will occur, along with more helicopters and maybe a proper MPA capability.
Hammer in terms of oil extraction costs, the FI are while not the cheapest area to extrract oil, they will be more commercially attractive, than the North Sea. I have seen various industry commentators say that due to the tax and royalty regime that is in place, every Falklands barrel is worth the same as two in the north sea to the oil company that extracts it.
I think the fact that Illustrious came out of an long 18 month refit to turn it into a Helicopter carrier last week with its ski jump still intact suggests that Harrier may not quite be as dead and buried as the experts would have us believe.
All I know is that the MRA4 decision is something that will come back to haunt them. Probably sooner rather than later if my reading of the South American situation is correct. 😡
A ZSU 23 is a target that you very much want to be rid of if you are flying Helo’s or low level aircraft in that area.
I know Brimstone is only marginally heavier, but what I think I was getting at was range, which in a low level airframe like an Apache would mean that it could stand off even further out of harms way.
Even more UK Apache action could be about to happen. Now going to Yemen as well 😮
Hopefully the MOD will issue an update in the next day or so as to what teh Apaches have been up to.
There is some film on the BBC website of the inside of the sentinel R1 on Libya ops as well. I won’t post a link to it here in deference to this being the Naval Ops thread. They didn’t show much anyway and certainly very little about what it can show on the screens
Here is the link to the BBC film onboard CdG in case someone has not seen it.
I also thought it was very unusual for the BBC to be so positive about a carrier. Maybe to the journo concerned thought it was so blindingly obvious that he had to say it, or perhaps he has just ‘gone native’ while on board 🙂
BBC Film on board Charles de Gaulle. Quite interesting.
49 years ? 😮 I don’t think even some of the active US B52’s are that old !
Apache now definitely to take part in Libya operations according to the BBC.

Probably best if we now merge this thread into the Naval operations off of Libya discussion, assuming that they will be operated from Ocean which has them on board ? What chance they have aquired some navy markings ?
Note to UK MOD and RN re the CVF’s. Intensive carrier operations require an effective fixed wing COD capability.:diablo:
Can I just add there are some terrific photos on this thread, some of the best I have seen on Carriers. Many thanks for posting and keep them coming.
Hopefully we will be seeing some Apache ones from Ocean in the next few days
Just heard on the radio that the UK MOD may be back pedalling on this, and that it may now just be the French attack Helicopters.
Article to back that up in defense news.
