1997 SDR reduced the SSN force from 12 to 10. A number that is still valid as far as I am concerned. Its such a shame we are going lower.:(
That particular SDR seemed to plan for a navy that was affordable even now, but it looks like its being ignored now.
Great idea, and lets just keep it to the actual construction itself rather than the long tortuous political road to its construction. 😎
With all that amphibious kit I can’t think of an occasion when they would ever let such an important asset as the CVF’s close enough to the shore to offload vehicles by Mexafloat anyway, so its probably for the best that they don’t have a dock.
Cloud 9, a mate of mine also used to park at a similar car park at Heathrow in the 80’s. One day 20 or so cars including his had their paintwork damaged by the leak of a caustic subtsance that came from an aircraft on approach. From what I recall his insurance paid out but the insurance company did try to get recompense from the BAA, but I don’t know how it ended.
Those images are excellent. Assuming that hanger is based upon reality, its not very wide is it ? It doesn’t look much wider than an invincible class hanger. There must be a reason, as the layout of the hanger will be one of the areas where they will have focussed a great deal of design time.
These things do happen. I lost my windscreen on my last car due to an aircraft approaching Heathrow. They go directly over our works car park every couple of minutes. Although I didn’t see it happen, a chap from work was standing about 10 yards from the car when he heard the crash. He wandered over and saw lumps of ice everywhere and a 3 inch scab in my windscreen  He couldn’t see the aircraft due to low cloud but he could hear it disappearing off into the distance. There wasn’t any other damage thankfully, so I didn’t make a fuss and just claimed it on the insurance.
As someone once said; You can raise an army in month’s, an airforce in years, but a navy takes decades………………:(
There was a report on the radio this morning that the first steel for the hull is to be formally cut in a ceremony this week attended by one of the royals.
As work will finally have kicked off with the hulls, do we need a new long term thread called something like ‘Building the CVF’ ?
Agreed, If it had been a top 10 airline and not so far away I suspect that the news media would have been a lot more interested.:(
It looks quite good 😎
I don’t know why they don’t describe her as being ‘laid up in ordinary’ just like they did in the old days. Those ships were effectively empty hulls with most fittings removed but available to be reactivated with lots of work.
In terms of aircraft, aren’t we now only operating approx 30 Harriers in total with the rest unavailable ?
Agreed aircraft fuel systems are designed for pressure and not vacuum. It is for this reason that a fuelling operative has to be very careful when doing a full defuel (say prior to maintenance) as serious damage along the lines of what djcross suggests can occur if procedure is not followed.
I can’t think of a single vehicle of any kind that sucks its own fuel supply.
Does anyone know if the Uk are happy with the cannon on the Apache given significant recent experience ? Would they have preferred a smaller calibre and more ammo ?
From what I have seen on the telly, they seem to call in the Apache when the ground based 0.5 Brownings and the grenade machine guns can’t quite do the job.
I can back up what they say about Continental. Two of the best steaks I have had anywhere have been in their business section (Yum,Yum:D) Their wines are not bad either.
Finally some good news re the FSTA. The first one flew last week, per the MOD web site.
