Its probably not far off the time for BAE to think about designing something new for the next decade.
There is a telling comment in the RN official handbook that was published I think last year, as they were talking about how they are now able to deploy them from ships. I can’t remember the exact phrase, but essentially what they said is that the UK MOD view the Apache as ‘the most important battlefield innovation since the introduction of the tank in 1916’. 😮
So I suppose it means that you can carry 25% more rounds into battle for the same logistical footprint (although bulk is always an issue as well). I guess my point is that it is going to have to be very little dearer than a conventional projectile to justify the research. Have composites really come down in price that much ? My experience with them is in motorsport where they still cost us many times more than a metal equivalent despite improved techniques.
Maybe there are other unpublicised benefits ?
Calm down lads please, you are generating more heat than light. Both of your contributions are usually valued and well worth a read…….. but not at the moment 🙁
total costs associated with bringing the Raptor into fighting shape are now hovering around $360 million per plane
😮 😮 😮 😮 😮 😮
Thats the sort of number that would scare any government. You are starting to talk real money
Its closer than that. The UK Government during a public debate in Parliament at the end of last year said that they expected to pay the equivalent of about £110m per A400M aircraft ($220m) for the purchase alone. I think the exact figure was £2750 million for 25 aircraft. The reason it is so close is that the C-17 has got significantly cheaper once converted to GBP due to the current favourable exchange rate. The C-17’s will no doubt cost more to run but for outright purchase they currently represent good value for the UK.
But which is more vulnerable to ground fire at low level when providing CAS the Apache or the A-10 ? I think I would rather be in the A-10, but the Apache is a great machine as well as they kind of compliment each other. The Apache for local support and the A-10 for longer range stuff or where a long loiter is required.
Folks being asked to fall on their swords. Inevitable I guess
Are they test flying the new engines yet ? Wasn’t a single engine going to be fitted to a C-130 and test flown in the UK or is my memory remiss?
Knowing how Americans think (I know dozens of them due to my job), they are bound to be inspired by the Vulcan story and someone is no doubt thinking “what if we …………?”
I bet something interesting will fly there in private hands in the next decade.
Debden in North Essex is also pretty intact as well (although there is no tower). It is so intact that the governmet slapped several preservation orders on parts of it last year as one of the last remaining intact Battle of Britain bases (There was a threat of development). The runway area usually has public pedestrian access as no flying goes on there any more and a good few local folks walk their dogs over it. Runways could do with a resurface though but parts of them are regularly patched as it is used for motorsport. See aerial photo. Preservation has no doubt been helped by the fact that there is a large NATS radar on site and that the Barracks (which are fenced off and separate from the airfield ) are still used by the Army

The thing is that it ddn’t really work for me. The first time it was on, I didn’t pay attention as my Brain just said “Oh, BA have dug out an old ad”. The next time I saw it, I did a doubletake when I saw the name Silverjet but still somehow I thought that it was BA messing about. If I still think “BA” every time I see it then surely BA are getting some free advertising off the back of the upstart ?
When I last visited the Imperial War museum about 15 years ago in London they had an interactive display where you could select individual incidents involving Doodlebugs and I think bombs as well. There seemed to be a complete list as we found the incident that damaged my fathers house. As part of it it named those whom lost their lives and the damage to the streets and buildings concerned. I presume the database still exists somewhere or is it the same one as mentioned in the CD-Rom above ?
Should be some announcements later today, the press are saying 🙁
………….And I forgot to mention FRES
At least that is now apparently ahead of schedule. Haven’t heard about the budget though
