The Sealord said
one of the biggest issues is manpower
So true. You could make the case that the army alone is 20-25,000 men short of what is really needed. That will cost not far off a billion a year to start with 😮
In addition to the items listed by Sealord and Swerve for immediate procurement, you might also want to add;
MARS & its various parts
The Royal Marines really need an Amphibious Fighting Vehicle like the USMC for use with the improved Amphib capability
FSC (big money)
A proper Land attack derivative of Type 45 to assist Amphib capability
Housing improvements for all services
Medical improvement all services including battlefield
Decent pay rise for entry level soldiers
I still think we need a proper ground attack aircraft similar to the A-10.
It all costs money that no-one wants to cough up though
Some of the other websites are suggesting that what Turbinia asserts could be true i.e. Government statement this week to say its all a mistake and that any cuts will be minor eg winding up the University naval fleet or similar.
At least we all have something to look forward to in 2009 then. Presumably the pre-production airframes will come to the UK rather than stay in the USA ?
Are the UK MOD going to be recieving any of the pre-production aircraft for testing ? If so, what type and when ?
Although not specifically relevant here I think the potential of the EMALS system is quite exciting as the loads on the launch aircraft will be much less. You can also be sure that a similar system that assists with landings can’t be to far away either. The ability to programme the deceleration of an aircraft via a laptop to reduce the loads by varying an electric current is very interesting and will lead to lighter designs for naval airframes or increased airframe service lives depending on the doctrine that they choose to apply.
How about Just jane at East Kirkby for fast taxiing and take off shots with her tail up. They wouldn’t need to change her as the markings and bomb caould all be added in CGI. The background is open countryside so it could be anywhere in England. See photo on the attached
Despite the above yesterdays Times suggests that the RAF are indeed seeking ways to get out of Tranche 3 by substituting the Saudi aircraft. Italy is also looking to renegotiate
As Manston says, according to the EADS press release a couple of days ago the Puma is going to be around a lot longer with the proposed upgrade to HC2

Would there be something in the smallprint about their required minimum equipment fit ? Reason is if I was writing the PFI requirement for HMG, I would ensure that these machines were suitable to be called into military service if something unforseen kicked off in the future regardless of type.
I thought i had heard that BAE were informally working on navalising the AS90 gun fitted to a modified version of the current 4.5 mount, or has that also gone quiet ?
Clearly in WW1 there was a bombing strategy, but as to whether it could genuinely be described as strategic in the modern sense is a very moot point. I think that first of all strategy has to be defined within the limits of the WW1 capability. If you were to ask the RFC they would have said yes we had a strategy, whereas had you asked the same question of Field-marshall Haig he may will have considered it a more tactical roll in the much bigger picture.
I don’t claim to be an expert but as said above, surely truly strategic bombing can’t really have been said to have matured until WW2 ? Regardless its definately a great topic for academic debate and I bet someone has penned a masters degree on this contention.
GMLRS is now a very flexible and reliable platform particularly as they are now doing much longer range rockets, so would be worth navalising for littoral ops. Even on a current operation I would be tempted to experiment with taking a few tracked ones along to see if they could be succesfully launched from a ships helideck or similar in support of amphibious landings.
Big guns will always be expensive and require a large specialist back-up organisation. I would have thought that 195mm might be the realistic upper limit today before the costs go through the roof. If you link that to longer range charges and GPS guided shells, then you would have a weapon that wouldn’t be much less effective than those of WW2. Barrel wear would be much less of a problem than then as you would have to fire many fewer shells to hit your target.
I think one area where the new film will improve on the original in particular will be the sound. In the original you didn’t quite get the wonderful noise that 4 Merlins generate when on the ground, as anyone whom has stood beside PA474 or ‘Just Jane’ when running will testify.
Ed so your advice to the Russians is to spread out a bit and cause real chaos ? 😮
How many active Bears are there ? Could they send 30 if they deemed it appropriate ?
Another C-130 lost. A special forces one this time. I know its in the Sun, but other UK miltary websites are saying its true.

Will it be replaced ? …………………………..I think you guys know the answer to that one 😡
