Todays Scotsman newspaper is suggesting that Today is the big day for the announcement.
Surely the power of the Radar is going to be dependant upon the electrical generating capability of the aircraft. The E3 must win that capability hands down compared to the E2:confused:
I seen Brown visited Sarkozy in Paris yesterday. hopefully among other things this was on the agenda
Thats the piccy that really shows her size to best effect 🙂
Its not been fitted with any guards over the engine inlets. I thought they were virtually standard fit these days to prevent seabird ingestion ?
Great pics
PM Gordon Brown in Prime Ministers question time was asked two direct questions about the aircraft carriers by the Tories a few minutes ago. To both questions his answer was that there would be an announcement “soon”.
He was also asked to increase the number of Frigates & Destroyers above 25 but effectively said that the money wasn’t there to do so.
More in today’s Time’s although the piece focus’s on other defence projects such as type 45 & FRES

There was something on one of the French news agencies this week that suggested that the new French government are not looking to sign off on it until next year anyway regardless of what Brown does 🙁
The RAF will get plenty of chance to use the guns in Afghanistan if they deploy them in the spring of next year as the RAF website suggests.
The LHD looks a very interesting design and probably just right for Australia. Its packaging must be very novel to squeeze so must into a vessel that size. Its no greyhound though with a 19 knot normal top speed and a 15 knot cruise according to the project website despite being 230m long. There has been a lot of critism within the UK RN re a similar max speed for the LPH HMS Ocean. Presumably the Aussies have factored this into their decision, but seeing where Australia is geographically and the length of its own coastline they must have been tempted to go for something a little faster so that it takes less time to deploy ?
I guess I am like many aviation enthusiasts and find that UAV’s and UCAV’s leave me a little cold and hence I don’t follow the projects with the same level of interest as I do the manned stuff.
The list above is pretty extensive, but which of these is likely to be the closest to being a ‘fighter’ or perhaps to phrase it a little differently which has the most warlike potential ? Does anyone have enough knowledge about them to summarise the likely ‘hot’ ones ? 😎
How many of these will genuinely end up as in-service pilotless semi-autonomous fighter aircraft rather than unmanned observation/recon/ weapons delivery platforms ? Few if any, I would suggest
I saw the film at the weekend as well and thought that the flying scenes and attach scenes were great, indeed I had forgotten how seemingly authentic they were. I recently also rewatched Pearl Harbor and the flying and attack scenes in that are very poor in comparison even with the benefit of CGI.
Interesting thing about the pumpjet propulsor. I have seen lots of photos of the Astute but none of the rear end. Were they deliberately keeping that bit out of view or covering it with something at the launch ? The large Cut away poster on the UK MOD website that they put up last week shows lots of detail of the new boat but it just shows a conventional prop but no pumpjet so is this bit being kept out of sight deliberately ?
What about the AH-64’s ? They are not at full longbow spec are they ? Maybe an upgrade there or some changes in response to recent operational experience ?
With 100 plus fast movers and the F-35 in the future they may need to upgrade their air to air refuelling as I think they only have 2 KC10’s ?
Also how modern is the maritime recon and intelligence capability ?
C-130 fleet looks a little small as well, if I remember correctly they only have 2 or 3 aircraft, presumably this is being addressed ? Are there any plans for a long range lifter as the Netherlands do still just have a global reach.
