It sounds like its because the RAF want delivery 2009-10, when I think I have seen that based upon current output and orders production will have ceased by then  Has anyone heard where the current order book stands ?

Although the British special forces were using Laser designators in the Falklands and Paveways were dropped so actually hitting it may not have been much of a problem. The BBC has some film of a designator being used back then to hit a target close to houses where they needed precision delivery.

In todays atmosphere of UK MOD cut backs and significant budget problems, 3 new C-17’s will do just fine thank you 😀

Not quite, as what we are discussing is a blue water patrol craft that could be operated thousands of miles from home and potentially at most latitudes and Sea states. That makes things a lot more complicated designwise than a local Coastguard patrol vessel (even the big ones) before you start worrying about the other things. Look up the new HMS Clyde as a baseline of what might be a starting point of the sort of thing Jonesy is talking about. Lots of navys are apparently looking at vessels like this.

I don’t want to move the thread away from the CVF and towards politics but these views in todays Telegraph are I think important in the overall debate as to why decisions that are needed on projects like CVF are not being made. A bit of positioning and interservice rivalry no doubt, but we are hearing this more an more.

I still think the Global Corvette idea had merit. It was a daft decision to kick it into the long grass without giving it try……

I see Beedall has just published his review of the RN for 2006, it makes very grim reading indeed and he is also now hinting at possible cancellation of CVF and the sale of some of the T45’s. I would suggest any Brits have a couple of very stiff drinks before reading it………… you will need them 😡 🙁

And does anyone know if they removed the radars from the SHAR’s before they sold them ? If they did, then no doubt they are sitting in some store somewhere or perhaps they just chucked them in a waste skip ? 🙁

Things are worse than that in many respects. If you go over to ARRSE (Army Rumour service) website they are really getting themselves into a lather with a 200 message thread as the famous Parachute regiment have been banned from parachuting for the next 4 years to save more money. 😮 Competing units are having a real laugh at their expense as you can imagine including renaming them ;), but descretely looking over their shoulders to see whats coming their way as well . This is all getting a bit sad really 🙁

Did I see somewhere this week that the US congress has approved another ‘small’ batch of C-17’s at low production rate to keep the line going while other countries make up their minds whether to buy ?

I may have imagined it though after a rather heavy Xmas Party at Nimrod towers ………………….:diablo: 😉

Lawstud no I haven’t, although in the shakeout from shortage of heavylift capability after the Tsunami there were several reports in the UK newspapers that raised this very possibility and did specifially mention that there was embarrasment in Germany over the problems they were having getting transport and that the C17’s were being considered as an urgent program by the Luftwaffe until the 400’s arrive. It has gone quiet though so maybe they decided not to proceed or the UK papers got it wrong which is not unusual. Any confusion might have come from the NATO C-17’s which I think are to be delivered next year and operated from Ramstein ?

Back then they had the Strike Carrier Hermes (now INS Viraat) which could carry more Harriers than the current small carriers. Over 20 if I remember correctly.

In terms of what it normally carries I think it is much less than that for Harriers and may be as few as 9. I have seen it quoted that up to 16 have been carried but that then robs them of helicopter parking space. I think they normally say that they can carry 24 ‘airframes’ in total, meaning I guess that almost any mix is possible

I was having a chat with a design engineer the other day who works in a different industry but is interested in Naval stuff and we were discussing the CVF’s. He reckoned that the UK CVF’s may not need such a steep ski ramp as the Invincible class as the F-35’s will have a significantly longer deck run before reaching the ramp and should not be so marginal powerwise on take off. So If say the ramp was only say 5-7 degrees rather than 12 as currently then that may mitigate things towards the Hawkeye as fewer Mods to the landing gear would be needed to beef it up. It would still need arrester gear though.

However, as usual I have a horrible suspicion that this will once again be a cost led or ‘UK Industry first’ decision and that a Merlin will be decided upon or maybe something from left field such as a ‘cheap’ AEW UAV with the few remaining Sea King AEW as back up until the technology was mature………………
