Agreed, the lack of Sea lift and their old C-130’s would be a difficulty for Argentina, they had that problem in 1982. We are of course all assuming another invasion was planned. What if they just upped the Tempo with agressive patrolling and used any potential new Russian equipment for that ? It doesn’t have to get to a full scale conflict; a bit of local tension can really up the ante and force a reappraisal of all the equipment down there.

A very interesting debate and a thought provoking article. The UK is currently in a very tight position with two major deployments and would be very hard pushed to run a third even on a small scale without borrowing equipment from other nations. If say Argentina was to buy a couple of squadrons of modern Russian fighters at short notice and base them in the south, this could be a scenario that the UK would not like at all and would have no choice but to respond.

Things are very different now though compared to in the past and satellite reconnaissance is now much better than in 1982 and you can be sure that regular overflights looking at what is happening militarily in Argentina is currently being done, unlike back then. The presence of cruise missiles in the UK portfolio is quite a major deterent, although I guess we actually don’t own enough for a campaign of more than a couple of weeks at best. The retirement of the Sea Harriers sent out the wrong signal to Argentina in my view and the laying up of the Invincible and the sale of type 23’s to Chile can’t have helped either.

Maybe positioning a few Typhoons in that part of the world would be a prudent thing to do and perhaps run an exercise to see if the E-3’s and Nimrods can provide 24 hour cover that far from Ascension, which I very much doubt.

Is there any other official film on the web yet ? The one in the link seems to have gotten worse, and will only run as far the F-35 coming out the hanger before the link crashes on both my laptops 😡

Even this BBC article doesn’t seem too happy with the message this sends out

For low level CAS stuff I would disagree. Its far too expensive an asset for low level support. It may not even to prove that robust until someone starts shooting at it and its had a few years of low level. Leave that stuff to the AH64’s, A10’s, Tornados and the somewhat compromised Harriers . High Level CAS (At what altitude does that phrase become a contradiction in terms ? ) or Stand off ground attack, yes no problem.

In the future when they are a dime a dozen, then no doubt that would change.

I presume that the US Government have also got to have the ‘Operational Sovereignty’ conversation with the other partners for the F35 as well. The larger ones will be wanting a similar deal as the UK as indeed will any large future ad-hoc customers who come along when their F-16’s need replacing.

So, what are the chances of France shouting Foul and kicking up a fuss ?

Maybe they will still get their Rafale order anyway

The USAF/RAF base Diego Garcia is in that part of the world, but would give RAF A2A refuelling folks more than a bit of practice as its at least 1500 miles from Sudan :diablo:

Any political reasons why the Saudi’s can’t do this ? There are hardly short of air assets…………………………….

Let me chuck something on the table from left field that you can have a laugh at.

How about a Saudi aircraft carrier to fly the rafales from ? :diablo: They are going to have several different aircraft with similar abilities, now a carrier would enable them to do something different with one of them them. Saudi Arabia does have water on two sides and quite close on the third. A fourth CVF to be built by the French anyone ? 😉 :diablo:
