The ships website suggests Harrier GR7A’s from articles posted. No doubt the number of these will change as required in the next week.
The UK ones have 35 years of practice of what on occasion was very similar to urban warfare in Northern Ireland, they developed various techniques to ensure they were not fired at by heavy machine guns and RPG’s, one of which was never to arrive at the scene of the incident in the Helo but to go somewhere random up to a couple of miles away and to arrive on foot or from a Landrover that they picked up and carried under the helo. This way they avoided ambushes. There were all sorts of other tricks they used as well based upon bitter experience. No doubt they are doing similar in Iraq.

In the UK as said above they have also kind of admitted that the Merlin is too large, too capable and far too expensive for the SAR role, so you can be sure whoever takes over the SAR role here won’t be using Merlins. However, I suspect that the RAF will keep some merlins configured for this for their own uses or if a longer range rescue is required.
SteveO, yes they look good don’t they, if only the government would let the royal marines have a few to go in the new amphibious fleet
Wasn’t there something in Janes earlier in the year about there being a ‘Super J-10’ being produced with better engines & thrust vectoring etc. or did I imagine that ?
There is no chance of the UK having any of these, not when its got 232 Eurofighters in the pipeline which is about 80 more than they really need. Also the UK is deficient in other areas and any spare money would be far more likely to be spent on this than Raptors
Shouldn’t be a problem medium term as ‘some’ of the new RAF 330’s will be 3 point refuellers and have both fuelling methods according to Air tanker. The majority will be 2 point probe and drogue though
Yes, that is an excellent point
Makes you wonder just how efective something like the Harpoon is when you see so little obvious damage (no doubt its much worse under the skin). In terms of destructive effectiveness it must be bombs or torpedoes every time given a choice.
RonOO, Thanks for the Supacat/M777 info 😉
Its not like the mothballed one is sitting rusting away in the boonies somewhere, it was tied up at the main quay at portsmouth, last time I looked.
Now if you want to see mothballed go looking for the decommissioned Fearless and Intrepid while in Portsmouth; now that is a sad sight, parked out the way and looking very poorly. 🙁
In spite of what Beedle is saying I just don’t see it being cancelled now, particularly as the French are now on board and due to the recent improved optics around the JSF. It is more likely that some of the other projects will be cut or delayed.
Quite why the RN persists in upgrading the type 23’s with improved sonar at great expense baffles me as the the major submarine threat disappeared with the cold war. There might be some savings to be made there
There was a 10-15 minute debate on the radio last night about this, and various luminaries had their say including a journalist who had spoken to the commanders on the ground. It sounded like it was infantry, fire support and Chinooks they wanted, plus a sensible number of Warrior Armoured fighting vehicles. At 24 tonnes each they wouldn’t be able to fly in many at a time so no doubt they will be either asking the USA to assist or chartering something Russian, if they get the okay to send them that is
The general consensus was that the mission had changed, that they may have been mislead by Nato as to what was really happening on the ground, and that as a consequence they had taken a knife to Gunfight.
Interestingly more than one commentator compared the UK to Canada and concluded that the Canadians were much better equiped for the task in hand
