I think the problem is less the quantity of tired Lynx and Gazelle (if it really is that number of U/S aircraft then that is a scandal) but the total shortage of medium and heavy transport stuff in the Puma/Sea King/Merlin and Chinook class, not just deployed but actually in the inventory.
Sens may have a point, perhaps the balance is not correct. It has been said before
A TU-160 would be nice
Looks like the demands from the UK force commanders will be met;

It would be nice to know what they asked for and indeed if there was anything not in the current inventory.
We covered this on the other thread, but I like the sound of the A-10’s. I bet the USA has loads of even the basic A-10A sitting in storage somewhere. I doubt they would miss them. Won’t happen though…… 🙁
Have there been any pictures published of the layout of the proposed FB-22 ?
What do they cost compared to the T45 ?
No don’t tell me, no doubt about half the price…………..
Agree with everything you said Sealord. I have my doubts about the Supacat thing. I have’t seen the spec, but I suspect that unless the gun can be demounted and moved separately, it would be too heavy for any of the UK Helicopters to lift.
The Canadians went out and bought some M777’s for this deployment and excalibur rounds as they though it was going to be tricky. I don’t doubt we have enough Apaches (somewhere) but as to whether we have enough pilots is another matter.
The general outline really is very similar to the T45 isn’t it ?
I kind of agree, I can’t remember the exact number of VC-10, and Tristar they currently operate but it must be about 25. In future 9 plus 5 spare A330’s doesn’t sound enough. However, they can always add extra airframes on the end of the order. Its interestsing though that when you visit the Airtanker website, there is lots of info on there, but the one thing they don’t mention is the number of airframes they will provide, so maybe its not yet cut and dried.
What is sure though is that some small nation will be getting themselves a nice bit of capacity when the Tristars come on the market, or will they go to a private air to air fuelling operator ?
Isn’t the current Hawk Supersonic in a dive anyway ?
If I was a pilot, I might be a little worried by this phrase (from the original report)
“This plane is a good plane in the opinion of all its pilots, if not the best in its class,” said the chief executive of Dassault Aviation, Charles Edelstenne, in April.
Most chief Execs normally tend to be very bullish about their products, but clearly not this one. Perhaps this lost something in the translation
The Large cargo freighter version, primarily being made as a one off for the 787 fuselage sections, a kind of Boeing Beluga but bigger. Not seen any dimensions for the LCF though.
Have a look on the Boeing website there are plenty of pics of it
No doubt Rolls Royce and the UK government will be asked to cough up some money to pay for some of the development. You will recall that the continuation of the second engine programme was one of the UK governments main targets in the last few months, so that will no doubt mean that they are forced to put their money where their mouth is
I looks a nice robust design
