Badger, the tankers are going to be equiped so that they can be used as civiliian transports at just a few hours notice. I have seen it written that it is anticipated that some of the airframes will fly tanker during the week and carry tourists at the week- end. The military communications suite is apparently to be designed to plug in and play so it can be removed in only a few minutes. They are also working out some fancy paperwork so that it can go from the military to the civilian register at about an hours notice.
Agree though that these would not be suitable in that config. as a government executive transport and that different layouts would be required. The royal flight aircraft are used virtually every day of the year so this is why perminant solutions are needed. I still do though think there is mileage in having one of the 330 tankers so configured.
Lets wait and see how it flys first. I would hope that all partners don’t commit themelves too far re numbers and definate ordered until it has done this.
JA are there any websites for these so that we can see the general layout of the vessels ? Can they take a helicopter ?
The problem is that there is a capability gap apearing again for a utility Helicopter. The Sea Kings won’t last forever and the Merlin is way too expensive and really half a class above these. What they need is a cheap pick up and drop Utility helicopter for people and loads for mainly boring utility work that doesn’t need all the high tech stuff. Something that fits somewhere between the Lynx and the Merlin with a 2-4 tonne payload and enough space for up to a 12-15 people. This is where they do need to spend just money on a significant number of general purpose machines. It can’t be unrelated to this why the US military is now buying new UH-1Y’s :diablo:
Does it mention if overall the number of helicopters is going to increase ? The UK forces are reckoned by some to be about 50 helicopters short of what they really need anyway at the moment, let alone in 10 years time.
Agreed Steve, we are experts at ignoring the obvious and throwing money down the drain 😡
One of these ?
If you were contemplating testing an aircraft away from to many prying eyes, the Falklands would be a pretty good place to visit for a refuelling stop.
There is quite an active topic re this in the ‘Commercial’ section
I would guess they are likely to be a 319CJ for short haul (it wouldn’t need the 6000 mile range though) and a 330 for long haul.
The 330 would be the most likely so that there would be commonality with the approx 16 new 330 MRTT leased RAF tankers and hence some cost savings re pilots, maintenance, passive countermeasures etc. Indeed if it was also equiped to do a bit of air to air refuelling/Cargo in an emergency as well they may get fewer questions from the opposition parties 😀
When the head of the airforce and the defence minister are not on the same page with their dates on important projects like this, its a little worrying I agree
Didn’t we do a similar thread a few weeks ago ?
Did anyone see this, any interesting revelations ?
Are We not looking at an aircraft that is getting towards the end of its production life ? Novel financing or unusual specifications are now far more attractive to the seller in order to shift a few more airframes and keep the production going longer. At this stage of the F-16’s lifecycle I think it would be difficult to rule out any option if you are LM. Even the politicians might be prepared to cut them some more slack in terms of tech transfer.
Looks like they are getting into similar funding problems as the RN. They really will have to re-consider how many Carrier battle groups they can operate, as each one has a very long and expensive support tail.
