One of these things costs as much as a Billion dollars a year to run (6000 crew salaries don’t come cheap), so that somewhat limits the number of countries prepared to consider it. Plus its 40 years old. They will probably lay her up in reserve and then scrap her in a few years.
This whole idea sounds a non-starter to me. She not a nuke so the USA can’t be trying to avoid decom costs. I guess they are just trying to increase the number of carriers in ‘friendly’ hands.
Imagine the running costs though 😮
Having been on the Rotterdam (thats not exactly small) how much longer is the De Witt ? Very impressive craft.
I think its a shame that the UK equivalents haven’t got a hanger and have a much smaller dock
So do the F-18’s use the basket ?
There are known cases of the Bear out accelerating small fighters from low speeds, so the Nimrod story doesn’t surprise me, those big 8 props get a lot of ‘bite’ in the air
The RAF hardly has un unblemished record with Helicopter upgrades either. Look at the shambles over the 8 Chinook HC3’s which were delivered in 2001 but may never enter service after hundreds of millions have been spent. 😡
Ah, so it’s having both types fitted. Interesting 😎
Very nice. How will these differ from the UK ones ?
More refuelling tankage perhaps, coz I know the UK ones are just using the standard fuel capacity ?
Yep that was some bomb. The largest man made explosion ever. 57 Megatonnes wasn’t it ?
No one has mentioned how appalingly noisy the TU-95 was inside. Many cases of hearing impairment occurred among crew
so they were correct then 🙁
Sorry to see them go
Where does Belgium get the lion rampant from on their Roundel ? What does it mean ?
Not sure I like the revised roundel either. Its almosts as bizarre as this :diablo: Which was actually used during WW2. As to whether it was official or not is open to doubt
The picture I would love to see which no doubt was never taken, was the RAF Lightning intercepting a U-2 at 88,000 feet back in 1984. Now that was some intercept……….
By cutting him out and leaving all the surrounding frame in situ, they would have a much better chance of seeing exactly what the problem was that caused it not to open.
The Sub is well worth a visit. A visit to that made up my mind that subs and me would never get on !! No privacy, none whatsoever. The Cavalier is interesting, personally, my favourite exhibit is the ropewalk, which is fascinating and one of the longest buildings in England. Some of the buildings on site are very old.
UK operates about 75 Harriers, although that number will fall with the Sea Harrier retirement
