It wasn’t just the increase in the rent, it was also down to the salt in the air and the problems with looking after airframes in that environment. With all the flyable aeroplanes returning up country, is it then viable to keep such a large building for a few remaining static airframes? If it was me and I was fronting all the expensive costs, then perhaps it was time to go. The Classic Air Force aim is to keep the airworthy aircraft flying and if they aren’t there anymore, is it still going to pull the public in?

It is as it was as Spitfireman, myself and wingcommanderflap have stated. Nothing was changed, it was all set up from day one and known that in time the ‘rent’ would increase. Least we have all been there!

Lets just see what happens tomorrow at the meeting.

The team one was taken at Biggin Hill in 1989 and the others from my own Facebook photo albums. Formation was taken from the back of Anthony’s BIWX on Easter Sunday 1989, the day after The Squadron opened and the other two are in the back of BIWX and CTKL.

Having spent many a Fighter Meet at The Squadron I can only say that vagueness, often driven by Messers Tolly and Cobbold, was almost compulsory.

There was the flag that got stolen from the up-themselves marshals, the time Janie saved Lofty and I from lynching by the Aces High crew. The Tornado crew that kept on ringing The Squadron bell (Drinks for everyone in the bar). The guy who got so pissed he rode his motorcycle into some airliner’s undercarriage, The pint Gary Numan bought me, Hazel the EHO, Sam Hutton trusting Lofty & I with supervising The Squadron lock-in. Dawn broke before the bar finally closed. (much akin to giving The Krays the keys to Wormwood Scrubs), John Blake and his endless tales, we all sat spellbound.

Bummer. I am getting so old.

Think we all are. I remember (perhaps too well) the night of the flag borrowing exercise and the chap on (and off) the motorbike too. Were good times, opened a lot of doors for me and went onto other warbird related activities. Wouldn’t have changed it for the world. Some people say I was lucky, in a way perhaps I was, but I was dedicated to the Harvard (still am) and so worked and worked to achieve all that I did. Pity there aren’t any time machines, as would love to go back and do it all over again!

Ahttp://www.shucks! Was very privileged to been involved with the Team from 1988 to the end in the early 1990s. And was only 20 years old, when was asked by Anthony Hutton to edit The Squadron magazine. Wonderful memories, although some are a little vague. Will try and scan some photos over the next couple of days.

Other names off the top of my head include Mike Brooks, Colin Dodds, Lee Proudfoot, Pete John, Pete Treadaway and Mark Hamment.

Bloody hell Martin, just found this from 1991? I think the wrong date on this video. Also it would of been the 50th surely not the 40th anniversary?

I note G-CTKL in its old colours, the Norman Lees harvard part owned by ( the name has gone, he bought a Spit partner of the squadron with Anthony Hutton) he also owned the Charles Everett one as well.

It was 1988, the 50th Anniversary of the Harvard. Norman Lees was flying CTKL, Charles Everett in Norman’s BDAM, Euan English had the Middle East schemed TEAC and yes CTKL in her original rebuild colours.

Anthony Hutton has retired and now living in France.

    and yes, I can’t count! 🙂

Too much time and money has been spent on the Varsity for it to be disposed of. Whatever happens to her she will be saved.

Many thanks to everyone for taking time to reply and to supply me with the necessary information. Will pass the details on today.

So sorry that it has taken a little while to reply (I’m not normally like this), but these last few weeks have been a little hectic in the Pengelly household, with my elderly Father in hospital as we speak – so much to organise for when he comes home – and then myself have been in this week, having a shoulder operation. Just managing to type with two hands, but making full use of the backspace key.

    Again, thanks, much appreciated.

    Best wishes,

Thanks for the reply Chaps i’m running an event next saturday that has 7 Harvards coming. Will try next year to get a few more.

Well that will be the most seen in one place for quite a few years. Perhaps give the details of the event here to get some more interest. I bet there are a lot of people out there that like Harvards. I had hoped to attend but still got a wonky shoulder and can only drive a mile or two let alone almost 300. Hope the day goes well.

    Cheers,

Would have been 1988 – the 40th Anniversary of the Harvard. Was featured on TV and I think still available on youtube.

if you wish to be a volunteer, don’t ever go in thinking that you are there to change anything at all. Do it because you want to and only because you want to. That way, you wont get disappointed.

I could add similar experiences to those described, but won’t. I spent a lot of time volunteering, and made a difference, but I doubt anything I did will be remembered in five years time.

Once you realise this, it becomes easier to make a decision, but often, very often, doing something for your own satisfaction is enough.

Thanks, much appreciated. If I ever do volunteer for something again, I know now to take more of a back seat and if its not for me will just walk away.

    Best wishes,

Aircraft may belong in the air but not all of them can be, or should be, made to fly. Let’s say ground static is a very good second-best.

Let’s just hope that, as a consequence of the move of CF from Newquay to Coventry that aircraft are not lost in the process – though it may be inevitable. However, the plus side is that the airframes which may be lost are not unique or sole-surviving examples.

As usual, the volunteers are rarely afforded much afterthought to such decisions. Another saying is “you’re worth what they pay you” which, in this case, is nothing. OK, that may be stretching the point a little because most people do appreciate the invaluable contribution volunteers make to any project. It’s just that, in a business world, there is little place for sentiment. I’ve volunteered for years with aviation projects and groups and it’s fair to say that, in most cases, I’ve retired with bruises. I learned early on that you should volunteer because you like doing what you do, not for any other reason. That way, you shouldn’t be too disappointed with unforseen or mis-managed outcomes. That is why, to quote someone’s comment in another thread, I now plough my own furrow.

    Anon.

I agree with Anon’s comments here as to volunteers. I duly volunteered ages before it opened as having been involved with warbird and vintage aircraft for over 30 years and it was almost on my doorstep (40 miles away). I did enjoy it to begin with, but I was my worst enemy as took on far too many projects and roles – opened accounts with various model companies and then ordered the stock for the shop, produced a line of A3 profiles working with the artists, was behind the soon to be released Oxford diecast G-AIDL Rapide with Consul on here, created the cinema supplying the equipment and working out the licenses for the films, and then building a sit in simulator depicting the aircraft of the CAF. That took 18 months working with lots of hardware and flight simulator people trying to get discount where possible. In the end, I burnt myself out, I wasn’t a pretty sight some days (some say I always look like that) and so I had to leave. I wanted it to succeed as did everyone else, but for reasons well beyond our own control, it is now a totally different event. I’m now back in the Harvard world from where I started at the age of 18, so least have something to dedicate my spare time too.

As to flying aircraft v static. CAF at Newquay was a mixture. We had the statics for rainy days and to let the public get up close to aeroplanes that they couldn’t do in their normal lives and then on days when we did see the sun and there wasn’t a crosswind, the fliers turned the place around and it was constantly buzzing. The pleasure flying aircraft always attracted attention and last minute decisions, the jets on either airtests or off to the odd airshow and then the visitors to the airport, all added to the experience. Now that is totally static and with a few airframes (I believe some are going to Coventry), it will have lost its soul. Once little Johnny has been past one jet, and then seen another almost the same, he has lost his interest and then the beach seems more interesting. Hopefully the volunteers that are left have some wonderful plans to turn things around, but sadly it is not for me. Each to their own.

Someone mentioned expenses for volunteers…….this made me smile. Think we used to get free pasties (ok they weren’t Ginsters, but not much better) but apart from that nothing. Think I paid for 80% of my flying and then on the last day of operations in October they ran a special flight just for volunteers and then we still had to pay £40 each. What gets me, is without volunteers, the place would not have done so well (read the Tripadvisor reports) and this is the thanks we get. Ok, i did it because yes, I wanted to be involved, play my part, but there come a time when enough is enough. I look forward to reading the developments of what remains at Newquay.

    Best wishes,

    Martin
