I know what you mean….I have a lot to thank him for. Truly one of the best.

BBMV or DDMV?? chippy or T6;)
Both……I first met Paul when I was at The Squadron at North Weald and did the history of the Chipmunk (BBMV) before I did that of the T-6G (DDMV). One day when we were discussing the finer points of T-6s over the phone, he asked me if I had heard of what he had bought next and so I replied that I hadnt worked on any Mustangs before, to be told that he wasnt talking about the history then, but did I want a flight in the back. Well, what could I say.
I was still living at home then and when I told my Mum ‘I’m going to have a Mustang flight’, it was just a ‘yes dear’ and that was the end of it. Eastenders was far more interesting.
I did SUSY and DDMV both on the same day at the 1992 USAAF Fly-In at North Weald with Rob Simpson flying the T-6G. I managed 40 mins in SUSY, with a trip up to Little Staughton and back.
I flew in the T-6G again this time with Paul at North Weald at a later date – he was a true gentleman and will always be missed. (I loved the Ilmor Christmas cards, they were always out of this world).
But last year, when I was kindly offered a short flight in the aeroplane that had started it for me (BBMV), I just didnt know what to say and still believe that it will be for sentimental reasons, one of my all time favourites. That quick flight meant a lot to me.
Best wishes,
Martin
Is that a ‘tracked’ Rapier behind the Gannet?
Sorry…..I’ll get me coat. 😮
Perhaps that was there to stop nosy persons like myself!!

Here are three photos taken of the Cornish countryside yesterday morning. We stayed well over to the North of the airfield and wont make a habit of it (honest), it was just interesting to see what everyone is talking about.
Will have to have a look for myself, next time I come to see Charlie Appleton at the airfield. Flying in his Ikarus is now probably the only way, that this historic airfield can be added to one’s logbook.
Best wishes,
Martin
Ref RB – well it will be the first aircraft I’ve flown in before you Martin, every one I fly in nowadays has a blue plaque with ‘Pengelly was ‘ere’ written on it!:D

I know thats there are lots of aeroplanes out there with that plaque in, but you’re forgetting dear old G-BBMV. Was soooo pleased to finally get the chance to have a trip in that last year. Makes me smile everytime I think of it.
Best wishes,
Martin
Came and had a look at the Gannet this morning….from above. Will post some photos later in the week. Don’t think we were the only ones to have a look today….makes an interesting change to looking at the Lightnings in the area!

Ah Northampton Model Shop – great place! – have known Nicky Evans since I were knee high to a (L4? 😀 ) grasshopper…and I bought my first ever Airfix kit there with my dad – I was five….. the 1:72 AOP Auster of course!
TT
‘RB now has a permit to test and so..flying should take commence in the next couple of days. I look forward to the day when I can joined the ranks of all those persons before me (when she has her LAA permit).
As to the Auster 6 kit, at Eggesford is VX113 the very same aeroplane that Airfix modelled its AOP.6 version on. Small world aviation.
Best wishes,
Martin

does anyone know what happened with this?
whether it was sold or not?
thanks

If this is Perranporth, then yes it was sold late last year and the airfield is now under new ownership.

I don’t know. Hopefully will be able to give you an answer on Sunday. Tomorrow am off to the model show at Yeovilton.

After recovering from spending far too much at Yeovilton, I ventured up to Eggesford today and besides flying in the Auster Mk.3, asked about the compass and it seems that it was not part of the inventory when the airframe was delivered there. As to its location, no one seems to know.

Harvard G-CTKL is currently painted in the markings of FE788, the second Noorduyn built Mk.IIB to see service with the RAF. She was only based at Boscombe Down from ’43 to ’54, so it would be interesting to know if your Dad had flown this particular machine.
The real FE788 was subsequently scrapped after RAF service.

Can’t beat the gorgeous looks of the Beech 18 – the most attractive aircraft ever fitted with a radial engine
Umm be careful what you say…each to there own. I have to admit its my favourite twin, but its not the most attractive aircraft with a radial. Not that I’m biased of course!!

Where’s the P-type compass gone? 😮
I don’t know. Hopefully will be able to give you an answer on Sunday. Tomorrow am off to the model show at Yeovilton.

The more times I look at the frame in the back of that truck it does IMHO look like a AOP.9 frame, but I could be wrong, I usually am!
