Thanks, Martin, that could well be the one.
Are there plans afoot to return ‘286 to the air? I really must get over to Eggesford, even if she’s in bits. I’ll have to persuade SWIMBO to let me have a day off for a nostalgia-inject.
Andy
think ‘286 will be a hangar (barn) queen for quite some time as there are already four airworthy Auster 9s at Eggesford (WZ662 – the prototype, XR240, XR241 – the 1969 England to Australia aeroplane, and XN441) with another on rebuild as we speak.
But by all means get in contact and we will see what we can arrange for you. At least some hangar flying in ‘286.
Best wishes,
Martin
Thanks T6 for the assistance. I spent many an evening sat in ‘286 pretending to be an Army pilot – so much so that I eventually became one!
Sadly, I can’t remember the name of the chap who had my lid. This would have been in 97, as I was in the process of raising funds to pay for my second wedding – even my motorbike was sacrificed. If he hasn’t repainted it, it’ll have the initials ‘AJ’ in black pen just above the ‘pigtail’.
Thanks once again.
Andy.
No problem. There isnt much left of ‘286, as most of the fabric is missing cept for the dayglo patches. Will venture down to her as soon as I can.
As to the Super Cub I cant figure out which one it is but I know of an L-4H at Perranporth (currently under rebuild at Branscombe), so will ask its owner if he is the buyer or knows otherwise. Cant think of any other Cubs in Cornwall.
Martin
Is AOP9 XP286 at Eggesford? (Used to be at my old ATC Sqn),
and
does the Super Cub owner fly in an ex-military Mk4 bonedome -I flogged my spare to a chap at Perranporth some time ago, who was restoring a Super Cub at the time. It’d be nice to know both of these two items from my past are extant.
Thanks.
XP286 is at Eggesford or what remains of it. The fuselage is stored off the airfield – I’ll try and take some photos next time I’m there.
Umm not so sure about the bone-dome wearing Super Cub pilot as dont know anyone who was rebuilding one at Perranporth and never seen anyone wear such an item in these light aeroplanes. Long term Cornish resident was L-18C Super Cub G-AYPO which until recently was based at Bodmin (now at Plymouth) (I’ve been in her 216 times, not that I’m counting) and the only other Super Cub in the county is one based on a strip in the Saltash area. If you can remember the chap’s name, perhaps I can tie the exact aeroplane down.

I’ll probably get Austerized for posting these on here!! 🙂

Just to prove that GPS doesn’t come as standard. Photo taken on Saturday by John Cooke.
Best wishes to all,

Hi Martin, I’m curious to know if anything has be done to the interior and panel. I trust it hasn’t been fitted with a Garmin G1000? 😉
Photos will be posted on here on Monday.

That Antonov flight had my husband on it as well. In Ian Stokes day I think.
Yes it was in the days of Ian Stokes before I believe he moved overseas.
I had never seen an An-2 before (remember this is Cornwall) and was told by everyone at Bodmin that one was staying over for a couple of nights before going onto the St.Mawgan air day. So, I arrived early at Bodmin to find that it had been delayed at White Waltham and so I waited and waited. Two gentlemen in flying suits arrived and thinking that they were connected to the An-2, I approached them only to find that they were from Davidstow and like myself were killing time to await the arrival of the Antonov. It seemed that the An-2 was to visit there first and so not wanting to wait any longer, I left my friends behind and followed these two chaps out to the microlight club. My friends thought I was impatient and was going home.
At Davidstow there was no An-2 and I was asked if I would like a cup of tea only to be told it would be £25. This I thought was a little steep, but it seemed it would be a donation to the club and as a result I could have a seat in the back of the An-2 whilst it took club members on a jolly. Well, it eventually arrived and I had the best cup of tea I’d ever had.
My friends when I saw them the next Saturday down the flying club said I had been stupid to go home as the An-2 had made a lovely pass down the runway at Bodmin. For some reason, they werent too pleased when they saw my photos. I dont know why.
Best wishes to all,
Martin
Thanks Anne!
I hope we might make it – but a Wednesday means work usually.

Same goes for me, but I should be able to get the afternoon off work. Will see what happens when I ask next week. It would be good to learn more about the site as its one of those places that you go through or over and dont think that much of (bit like Winkleigh I suppose). Now’s the time to learn.
When it was open to GA, I went in there on a number of occasions in a Super Cub (avoiding the learner drivers of course) and even had an An-2 flight (OM-UIN) with the microlight club there in the early 1990s.

A GPS fitted to an Auster….ummm I dont think so. If the weather holds out tomorrow, I’ll try and get you some proof 🙂

Hello,
(better late than never …)
If you are talking about Harvard G-BRLV Texan Belle (previously Night train), then I can say that this machine has been Based for since 2002 at EBKT in Belgium. It hopped to North Weald from time to time for maintenance. I last saw it in Belgium standing outside the extraviation hangar at EBKT in August 2007. It may still be standing in the Extraviation hangar at this point, but I can not confirm this for shure.
I hope this is the one you refer to.
Greets,
Stieglitz
It was indeed. I used to fly in the back seat of this often when it was ‘Night Train’ owned by Lloyd Owens.

STUNNING.
Hearty congrats to all those involved – a lovely job and the old girl deserved it 😮 sniff, wipes eye…. 🙂

There, there….will try to get some more this weekend. Hopefully by then the Permit to Test will have arrived and who knows, perhaps get some air to airs on Saturday. Have sent you a email with the original sized photos tonight.
Best wishes,
Martin
Right here we go…just received these taken by John Cooke on Saturday. Hope you all approve.

I heard of some rather vague plans a couple of years ago, but nothing heard since. Davidstow is privately owned and from what I can remember Perranporth was mentioned at the beginning, but this has recently changed hands and I know that the new owner has no plans for a museum of any kind.
Martin
Great news! Pics please!!!!
One day she will be mine…..

Patience, patience……please….well at least to your first though. Not so sure about the latter, as the present owner shall we say is very pleased with the restoration, having come down to see her on her rollout.
I should be getting the photos by email today, so will post them here as soon as I get them, but am going back to Eggesford next Saturday with camera, if all else fails.
