Thanks for all the replies – very interesting.
For a while they appeared in almost every issue if Aeroplane at the time and seem to recall that she did very little flying herself.
Anyway thanks again.
I remember seeing the lady flying the Cub, Maule and Harvard at North Weald. Believe things went quiet after the death of Mr Perry and the problems with the wing spar of the Invader. Believe she is now living in Florida and owns a pink Stearman!

I remember reading in his Biography that he was hurt greatly by the loss of many Pilot friends, In particular it mentioned “Hoof” Proudfoot who i believe helped teach Gary Numan to Display fly.
I do miss seeing Gary Numan on the scene, He was very friendly when i met in at a Fighter meet at North Weald many years ago, And had time for people which was very nice to see.
Hoof was a mentor to a lot of pilots, but think Gary’s initial warbird training was in the hands of Dizzie Addicott. A number of HFT members were sadly killed through their love of flying (Peter Snell, Pete Treadaway and Euan English), but we must not forget Norman Lees who was tragically killed in Spitfire PV202, as it was him that formed the Radial Pair with Gary. The loss of these gentlemen was great to a number of people and having been personally involved with them myself through my interest in the Harvard, I too ‘lost’ all enthusiasm in aviation for a year or two. Was it all really worth it, I thought. But then I suppose life has to go on.

And now for something a little different….
Tried out the scenery around Cardiff and Pembrey today and came up with these. In the second Master photo, there are TWO aeroplanes in the frame.

She had/has a single seat ‘Yak something’ on which I did a little work on in the late 1990’s . It has the underwing blades and is pink and yellow from memory ! Another creation from the paintgun’s of Mick and Shea Allen.
Umm I remember this….it was a Yak-55.

Does anyone know where I can get decent three view plans of the AOP.9 as these are needed for an FS2004 version which is currently in production?

Reading about Gary N I recall there was a lady called Barbette [spl?]who was on the scene in the 80’s with a Beech 18 and pilot.
The lady in question was Barbel Abela who had a number of aeroplanes based at The Squadron, North Weald in the early 1990s, including Harvard Mk.4 G-BRLV, a Lunar Rocket and the aforementioned Beech 18. The chief pilot for her collection was Len Perry who was killed in a flying accident in Russia. The British Aerobatic Association hold an annual competition in his honour.
She and Len were also owners of the Douglas A-26 Invader 44-33562 N7079G.

I have been told that Gary flew/owned this Tiger long time ago. Is this correct?
This was owned by John Webb, Gary’s brother.

G-AZSC is now owned by the Goodwood Road Racing Club and operates from Goodwood Aerodrome near Chichester in Sussex.
Its a great shame the old Harvard formation team are no longer in existence.
Septic.
Also got killed off through lack of bookings due to the large number of high powered Warbirds in the airshow circuit. Thats why Norman Lees and Mr Numan formed the Radial Pair in order to try and succeed the team.
Last I heard was that Gary was buying a boat as Dad was interested in messing around on the water. Harvard is now at Goodwood and is available for rides and instructional flight. I had mine in her at a Fighter Meet, so wont be joining the queue.
And “Jagged” is good, even though I prefer “Pure” or “Hybrid” :))

Mine was in a Cessna 150 (G-BFLM) at Bodmin in Cornwall on 12th February 1983. The aeroplane is sadly no longer with us, but I now try to fly every year on the same day as a sort of sad anniversary. Two years ago the club presented me with the left hand door of LM as a reminder of that first flight, having then sat in the P1 seat with the CFI Dick Smerdon. Sad but true.

From what I can remember (being at North Weald then), the airframe was duly scrapped.

No idea about the location, but the aircraft is a Hawker Hunter, and the band possibly Ultravox.
Re Ultravox, all I can remember about the band is that a Spitfire was featured in one of their videos.
Regards,
Jan
Thats not Ultravox (no Midge Ure and his little pointed sideburns). Their video with the Spitfire in it, was ‘Reap the Wild Wind’ (1982). Part of which was filmed at Booker with the then Patrick Lindsay Mk.II G-AIST.

Frightening to hear that they are now going for such high prices. I picked mine up from Truro on Saturday and am now awaiting a phone call from my local toy shop as they seem to think they are getting a number in this week. I told the lady what it was called and she kept asking for the aeroplane’s name, thinking that TSR2 was the product code. Somehow dont think this is going to happen – I’ll probably end up with something else 🙂

Well the Toy shop delivered (bought the lady a box of chocolates as a thankyou) and just now my local model shop has phoned to say that they are having another delivery of 6 this week and I’m down for one of those too.

Grey trousers, white hat and beer belly?
Or maybe:
Not quite…..’maybe’ might be the word…no was wearing a green flying suit and the obligatory orange jacket. Were you the gentleman with Nick Newns?
Weather is normally good for Branscombe. Last year it only got bad right at the end and by then most of the people had gone home.
Best wishes,
Martin
Nice photos!!
Don’t suppose you have any photos of the hardworking Warbirds marshaller? 🙂
Peter Vacher’s Hurricane is due to attend this year.
