Wasn’t 19MU at St Athan? Or is that too obvious?

Far too obvious :)….I’m not really good at my initial research am I?. Just typed 19MU RAF into old Google and what does it tell me…..St Athan. Must think more before putting fingers to keyboard.

Well at least thats part of the puzzle sorted! Thanks ZHR!

Easy. If the wheels have a series of 12 circular holes round it, it’s probably a Mk. 5. If it doesnโ€™t, itโ€™s probably the wartime version.

Glad to hear that the Skyjeep is airworthy again. Does it have the coupled controls of the Ace which I believe did away with the rudder pedals?

No, the SkyJeep has conventional controls with a stick and pedals rather than the odd ball and socket yoke of the earlier Super Ace. I believe that the original Super Aces didnt have rudder pedals but a foot throttle instead. What with windup windows, I think the designers wanted to try and make flying the Ace like driving a car.

When I flew in the Ace with the rebuilder Paul Longthorpe, she had been rebuilt with pedals, but retaining of course the yoke system. Cant see how that could have caught on – must have been terrible in a cross wind situation.

I lived and grew up in the area and can recall at least 3 scrap yards, two along side the A370 Bristol to Weston Super Mare road and quite close to the village, the other one was off of the beaten track and a little way in land from the A370.

Maybe 19 MU has a link to Locking or Weston Zoyland, both of which weren’t too far away from Congresbury.

Can you post a copy of the photograph ?

I thought someone would ask that question! – but sad to say I wont be going back for two weeks. I’ve had a look at a map for Congresbury and there is a garage in the village that looks close enough to be the area in relation to the church as far as I can remember from looking at the photo.
But as you say its not much good without any proof.

You were at Eggesford ? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

I suppose being Auster mecca it isn’t surprising, but next time your there i’ll pop along.

We can go over some maps for that Land Girls ‘109, also your Auster scrapyard. If its still there, i’ll go fetch it……….. ;).

As wasnt meant to be going yesterday (far too much to do at home), but the temptation of the SkyJeep and the AOP .6 was too much to refuse…..I wont be going for a little while (he says). But we can meet up and hopefully point you in the direction of the 109. I tried my local contacts and received no replies, but it seems its well known to Auster pilots. Will PM you as to arrange something in the near future.

Frightening to hear that they are now going for such high prices. I picked mine up from Truro on Saturday and am now awaiting a phone call from my local toy shop as they seem to think they are getting a number in this week. I told the lady what it was called and she kept asking for the aeroplane’s name, thinking that TSR2 was the product code. Somehow dont think this is going to happen – I’ll probably end up with something else ๐Ÿ™‚

The Western Morning News which covers Devon and Cornwall has a large article re yesterday’s events on Page 3 (not much else to cover down here, it seems) and guess what its very inaccurate. Has a lovely photo of PV202, but credits this in a somewhat lengthy writeup as the ‘Grace Spitfire’ and goes on and on about the rebuild at St.Merryn. I’m not going to bother to email and correct the chap who wrote it, he just wouldnt understand. Why, oh Why do the press make such glorious mistakes?

Excellent news – looking forward to seeing this aircraft, only ever seen the Super Ace (another beauty).

When I first started flying at the tender age of 15, the Super Ace (G-AKVF) was the first vintage aeroplane I flew in and did a cross country to Lands End from Bodmin and return in 1984. I cant remember much about it, but was nothing like I’ve been in since what with its weird flying controls.

Yesterday, having flown the SkyJeep, besides making notes with a clipboard and pen, I remained rather subdued about the whole matter, having flown the other model all those years ago. It was something that I thought I would never do. There cant be many people today that have sampled both types. I am indeed a very lucky person.

Finished the day off with 1hr 20mins in the recent rebuilt Auster AOP.6 VX113. This was the Army entrant in the 1959 Kings Cup Air Race at Coventry and later was used as the subject for the Airfix 1/72 scale model (previous to the Antartic re-issue). This will be at G-VFWE too.

    Ahh…yes. Well done that man.

    So I have seen one.

    Anymore for anymore?

We’ve got a very old one at our local airfield in working condition, but the question is ‘is it a postwar version?’. How can we tell if its a Mk.5 or not? Serial numbers? Size of wheels? The plot thickens…:)

Down here in the far South West, there are still towers at Winkleigh, Davidstow Moor, St Merryn and at Dunkeswell.

    T6Flyer – Plastic Past-Times in Poole have them in stock – 01202 746964.

Thanks, but a shop I pestered on Saturday, has phoned me up today and offered ‘their last one’. Will collect in two days time and hopefully get one from the source mentioned above too.

    Best wishes,

First can I say a big thank you for all the replies so far. Please keep them coming!

T6flyer – Nice to see the pics of the Eggesford 9’s. I didn’t get down there last year, but I’m hoping to take our terrier in there for this years ‘Auster fly-in’ If you’re there you’ll have to come and introduce yourself. I’ll be bringing VX927! Were you hoping to install the pods onto one of the Eggesford aircraft? It certainly makes them stand out a bit!

I’ll be there! Talk only came about as to the camera pods after reading that article in Air Enthuisast. WZ672 pictured so equipped (one of the ex-Bedford airframes) is currently airworthy in the States and may and I stress may eventually return to these shores. Even though they are a lot of AOP.9 spares at Eggesford (2 tonnes are being sold with WZ662), we didnt think that we had the pods or the needed fittings in stock. Anyway they would cause a lot of extra drag and the 9 isnt that fast an aeroplane anyway ๐Ÿ™‚

    Best wishes,

Think its called a cross wind ๐Ÿ˜€

I know it sounds weird, but it does happen. Even into wind or with nothing at all, the wing for some unknown reason lifts. Not every time, but it does occur.

With the tail surfaces of the 190/195 series, I seem to remember.

Not that I recall. Tubular metal airframe, fabric covered, but not sure about the control surfaces.

Auster AOP.9 control surfaces are metal.

How different is the Bird Dog to the Auster???

Only had 20 minutes in the Bird Dog, but it has a more power (213hp Continental v 180hp Blackburn Bombardier) than the Auster and therefore was/is a lot more maneauverable (umm need a spell checker?) than the British design. 9 has three seats opposed to the O-1’s two.
