Yesterday, she was rolled out and today is in Scotland at her first show. Been a wonderful project to work on. Sometimes stressful, sometimes fun, but very very interesting. A few months ago and I knew virtually nothing about 109s cept for films and airshows, but now know a little. This project would not have been finished without the invaluable assistance from so many people, but notable Steve Rickards for his expertise, Lynn Ritger, Ralph Moser, Zsolt Keri, Harald Wiegand and Ronnie Olsthoorn. Thank you gentlemen.
What with the interest in this build on forums such as this and on social media, I hope that this won’t be the last one that we build. There can’t be many FSMs as detailed as this?
Today, thought would have a day off, but no, starting work on a P-51D replica and a Spitfire VR system for America. No rest for the wicked!
Again, thanks to everyone for their kind comments. As always so much appreciated.
Best wishes,
Martin
Thanks to everyone for their kind comments, so much appreciated by all of us. Cockpit is bare as the owner wishes to fit this out himself when delivered. Which fingers crossed should be tomorrow. Still a few little things to sort out – undercarriage legs, paint chips and prop hub, but she should be rolled out this afternoon. And better still it’s a nice day down here, so should get some good photos.
Back to the hangar. Will try and report back later.
Thanks again,
Martin
Nice to be back. Thank you!
Martin
Thanks, FlyPast nice to be back after that ‘break’ at the weekend….
Not many posts to go from myself on this thread (thank god for that I hear you say). We’ve been working on it all over the weekend – wasn’t much else to do as it rained all of the time, and now only a few things to do. Prop goes on tomorrow and the gear doors are to be fitted and then once we have taken some photos, it will be dismantled and off to it’s owner.
Today, have had our ‘Weathering Wizard’ in and it’s looking totally different again. Gone from a piece of blue plastic, to something resembling an aeroplane and now something even more so. Still some work to finish her off, but looking very smart indeed. Hope you all agree.
Martin
Benno,
I know you have asked me before but will have a little look through my files again. I came up with the scheme for CTKL as FE788when she was rebuilt by MAPS at Rochester, so should have something. If not know of someone in Canada can ask.
Might be a few days as am so wrapped up in a certain 109 FSM, but that is departing in the next few days, so will have time to look at what I like best! 🙂
Best wishes,
Martin
(Thanks FlyPast, nice to be back!).
The possibilities are endless I suppose. Have had about 20 enquiries so far, but will sit down and work out the prices, once we have finished the complete airframe. Is meant to be delivered to its owner next weekend. And then I’m going to have a few days off, where I don’t have to look at an aeroplane! After that, starting another Spitfire.
Best wishes,
Martin
Mathieu,
This 109 was originally designed to have an engine fitted, but the project changed direction. But anything is possible, we would just have to change the internal steel structure. A Spitfire V currently in production is having one fitted, so yes to your answer.
Martin
Oh yes, will be on public display all over the UK. First outing with be Northern Scotland in two weeks time. So on its transit from Cornwall should be seen by a lot of people, towed on its own purpose built trailer.
And as to prices, all depends on what the specification is. Prices can range from £40K to 60K. May surprise a few people but each one takes 4 months to complete and you can see from this thread that a lot of work goes into each FSM. They aren’t simple models, but accurate renditions of the real thing.

Painting day today. Fuselage is all finished and is now being weathered. It’s the turn of the control surfaces today and we are especially pleased with the rudder, hopefully the first of many. The wings go in tomorrow and then after that, it’s just a case of sticking it all together and delivering to it’s new owner. What could be more simple!
Talking of Red Nosed 109s, we have had an enquiry this very afternoon where someone mentioned Messerschmitts of that colour. If someone wants one, we can make it and they can have any colour they would like!
Best wishes,
Martin
hi Martin,
like others already wrote, a wonderfull project! But what I am wondering, how much will the 109 weighs when finished?
Thank you. It’s off to the paint shop this afternoon and only when that is all completed, will we know how much it weighs. Don’t think it is going to be a lightweight, as there is so much metalwork under the fibreglass.
Martin
Fascinating work if you can get it . . .
How long does such an FSM take to produce I am wondering ??
Ian
Normally about 4-5 months from start to finish, but with any new type this can take a lot longer as to the research involved and the acquisition of manuals, blueprints, photos, drawings etc etc.
As to DH82EH’s question about did we use a 109, the simple answer is yes and no. Didn’t use a complete airframe but what with a lot of original loaned parts, blueprints and a lot of help from some lovely people, what you see is well hopefully a FSM (see am learning) of a 109. There has been so much interest in this one project that we hope that it will be the start of a new production line, not just in complete aircraft but also in parts, such as rudders, prop blades, rings etc etc. I never knew the 109 was such a popular aircraft. A few months ago and I knew virtually nothing about it, but give me a beer and I can bore you for hours now! 🙂
And the airframe behind Dave Chapman in the exhaust photo, is one of those Spitfire things. In for a new set of wings. Taken a lot longer as was originally required as the centre section and frame seems to be twisted and so we have had to have a rethink as to the various connections, to enable the wings and the fuselage to match.
Hope that helps. Thanks to everyone for their kind comments. So much appreciated.
Martin
Glad you enjoyed the visit. I wonder who the guide was? Seems a nice bloke! 😉
