Here’s XP254 at the Beagle Celebration, Shoreham last June.

XP254 is the Auster AOP.11 or Beagle E.3 (whatever takes your fancy). Auster’s last attempt to provide a fixed wing aeroplane for the British Army. But sadly along came the helicopter……

I tried all day on Saturday running around Plymouth and Cornwall looking for a kit, but everywhere I went they were either sold out, or it was just pre-orders only.

Was just going to give up when I went into a little toy shop who said that they only had models in every two months or so, but they offered to phone the regional Airfix chap for me on Monday. I gave them my name and phone number and yesterday came home to find a message telling me that a number will be later in the week. YES!!

I agree….but then I’m not the owner. Will try to obtain the period civil markings photos to see if an alternative can be found. But think the military colours have been discussed only as to where the aeroplane currently lives.

Nice to see a photo of G-AJHS. I remember her when she was owned by John Webb.

Believe this photo is an AOP.5, is that a camera on the wing?

You need to enlarge the picture to see it! ๐Ÿ˜€

Only thing I can see is the generator on the starboard wing, but then I’m getting old! Cameras I suppose would have been held by the second crew man in the rear seat. The pods on the 9 as in the original post are mounted on underwing attachments and look a little like ADF loops.

    This one looks exciting!!!!

This photo illustrates one of the most pecuilar effects I’ve ever encountered in an aeroplane – upon landing, sometimes and I stress that, the left wing lifts up for no apparent reason. We have never found out why, but it just happens. Weird or what?

This is what is the case with the photo here.

And now its my turn. First is what I used to do a lot of (this was G-BKRA with Rod Dean in ’94) and the second is what I do now (Auster AOP.9 prototype WZ662 G-BKVK)

Having not seen the film for ages (missed it yesterday), the shots with the Storch and the Sipa (Arado) were taken at Trebelzue, which is now part of RAF St Mawgan. The French Port at the beginning of the film as was Charlestown near St.Austell.

From what I can remember (tries not to think too hard) the Storch was the one owned by the Hon Patrick Lindsay (G-AZMH), but then I may be wrong.

The ‘Arado’ was SIPA S.121 F-BLKH (p/i F-WLKH), c/n 57 of the Salis collection. Destroyed in a fatal crash in 1978. The Deutsches Technikmuseum in Berlin has some parts of ‘LKH, but nowhere near a complete airframe. Although there are a few Arado Ar 96s around, no complete Ar 396 or SIPA clone exists to my knowledge.

Incidentally, the SIPA S.121 series was derived from the Arado Ar 396, which looked like this: http://www.luftfahrtmuseum.com/htmi/itf/ar396.htm

    Spooky! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

    Great minds think alike!!

Airframe was a Sipa S.121 (licence built Arado 396). Was registered as F-BLKH and then F-BLKH and crashed in 1978 when with the Salis Collection at Le Ferte Alais.

D’you know, I had a hankering to watch this yesterday, but opted for Scarface instead!

I always thought the “Arado” was the real McCoy – certainly looks it, anyway – that perhaps ended up being destroyed in an accident later

Off the top of my head, the Arado was the real thing, although was a French built Sipa and I remember it being at Old Warden after filming had finished in Cornwall. It was destroyed in an accident back in France.

Thanks to everyone for their help so far – it is so much appreciated. I think that the intention as to a new colour scheme is to put her back into a RAF one as she will be sharing a hangar full of military Austers, Chipmunks, Cubs, and that Broussard.

Just have to decide to go either for a wartime or postwar one. Decisions….decisions…. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Best wishes,

Has anyone got any Auster AOP9 photographs that theyโ€™re willing to share with us?โ€ฆ Iโ€™m particularly interested in finding a photo of a Mk9 with the wing mounted camera pod attached, and photographs of XP282 but any pics will be gratefully received!

    Many thanks

I have access to WZ662, XN441, XR240,XR241 and XP241 and also have a lot of Auster 9 photos, but none of your example. As to the Camera pod, there is a photo of WZ672 in the latest Air Enthuiast showing the airframe when retained with Auster, carrying a pod under the port wing. Some other photos I’ve seen in the past show both Bedford 9s carrying pods under both wings!!

We were talking about the pods yesterday, but dont think amongst all the spares that we have been details or fittings for such items.

Am sat at work now (in my lunch break!), so will try and show some photos of the Eggesford 9s tonight if I remember.

    Best wishes,

    Martin
