There are reports that up to 10 Lancaster replicas are to be created for the film. I wonder what their fate will be after filming is concluded? Will they be sold off or even donated to aviation museums around the world? One of them would make a splendid gate guardian for RAF Scampton.

Here are my thoughts.

Despite the lack of a mid upper turret it is not a “Dambusters” Lanc and that is not Guy Gibson’s signature. The Lanc lacks exhaust shrouds suggesting it was never used on night ops. The upper photo shows what looks like a D/F loop in a teardrop housing aft of the canopy.

The lower Lanc has light spinners rather like the Mk VIIs used in the “Dambusters” movie.

The lower Lanc is mounted on a pole which was the fate of many Canadian Lancs in later years. I would say it is a Canadian Mark X.

Anyone got any other thoughts?

This film was shown on ITV yesterday afternoon, yes I’ve seen it many times before including being at the late nght press premier when it first came out.
Father in law had never seen it before and couldn’t believe that it wasn’t archive footage, especially the scene when the Japanese a/c were taking off from the carrier.
Question is, were real a/c destroyed during the making of this film. I know that the P-40’s were dummies and that some of the scenes went nearly tragically wrong, but looking at the Catalinas being blown up and set on fire, well, they didn’t look like mock ups to me, nor did some of the smashed up B-17’s. Was the hangar that was blown up, at Hickam. It was a real hangar as it featured in a previous scene and was not a stage set as it was a steel framed building and had all the hall marks of a seriously damaged stuctural building.
Thinking about it, the film must have cost a fortune when it was made, did they get their money back.
Incidentally, some of the low level flying is well dodgy, especially when they strafe the truck, that really looks a close call.

Two aircraft were destroyed during the production. Jack Canary ,in charge of producing the airworthy Japanese replicas, was killed while ferrying a “Kate “replica. One of the “Val” replicas crashed into Pearl Harbour during the making of the film.

All the destroyed Catalinas were derelict hulks found in California which were patched up and cosmetically modified to resemble 1941 versions.

Dear Dave,

I remember hearing about a Tom Cruise “Flying Tigers” movie about 10 years ago. I think this project has been in the pipeline for a long time. There was a report somewhere that fibreglass replicas of P-40s were built for the movie which was to be filmed in New Mexico but then the whole project was scrapped a few weeks before filming was due to begin . I think the reason was that the promised funding did not appear.

Well said Dave!

I think the problems you have described really originate from the British Press and various writers of letters to newspapers who have become obsessed with the idea that the new “Dambusters” film is going to be “Americanised”. There is absolutely no reason to believe this. The new film is a UK / NZ co -production and has got nothing to do with Hollywood.

What people forget is that the original movie wasn’t entirely accurate and the new version is likely to correct all the errors perpetrated in the original film.

Let’s wait till the film comes out before we judge it.

Best Wishes,

I think you are correct in that the Dambusters Lancs had a single Vickers K gun fitted in the ventral position (why was this done and was it ever used?).

In 1976 I bought the Tamiya 1/48th Dambusters Lanc kit and it featured this item. I am not sure why the Revell Lanc has the twin ventral turret but it dates back to the early sixties and is not a very accurate kit.
Hello again,

In regards to “Memphis Belle”, I beleive David Putnam did want to make a film about bomber command ( There are some similarities in the Memphis Belle script to a Novel by Spencer Dunmore called “Bomb Run”)

How interesting! I remember reading “Bomb Run” in the early 70s. I recall it was similar to Len Deighton’s “Bomber”.

Well that is interesting news!

I read the other week that Stephen Fry has just completed the script for Peter Jackson’s new “Dambusters” movie.

I wonder if the rumoured remake of “633 Squadron” will ever materialise?

It ‘s odd that someone now wants to make “Bomber”. It was reported years ago that producer David Puttnam wanted to make a film about an RAF Lancaster squadron ,then found few Lancasters were available and that’s how he came to make “Memphis Belle” instead. (I wonder if that story is true?)

I have a 1969 edition of Airfix magazine which has an article about the “Battle of Britain “film. In the part of the article which mentions the plastic replica Spitfires used in the film the author mentions that “Gordon’s Aerolite”, a material rather like Bakelite , was considered as a material for building Spitfires duiring WW2.

Saw this on TV.
Apparently its one of only three remaining Lancs.!!!

Well said!

It amazes me how the media are so inaccurate in their reporting of warbird issues. Only the other week “TV Times” did a piece on “Foyle’s War” in which they claimed that only one Spitfire was available for filming. What they really meant was the TV company could only afford to hire one Spit.

It makes one wonder if the “facts” we read about other news stories e.g. Iraq are equally inaccurate.

I’m surprised that a major film was never made of the event, or was it, it doesn’t spring to mind, I can imagine Johnny Depp and Keith Richards standing on the bridge of the Campletown and Silvester Stallione orchestrating the raid, lets do it boys.
The 1967 film “Attack on the Iron Coast” starring Lloyd Bridges had a fictional storyline, but one which was based on the St Nazaire Raid.

The story covered all the main points of the St Nazaire Raid i.e. 4 funnelled destroyer used to ram dock gates, small launches carrying commandoes etc.

It was a pretty poor B movie which even re-used some incidental music from “633 Squadron”. It is a pity they could not have made an accurate film about the St Nazaire Raid instead

Unfortunately I cannot get my screen grabs to upload as they are above the Kb limit. If you would like to e mail me back channel at colin.barron@ukonline.co.uk I will send them on.

You are quite correct that the Bof B film started filming in Spain in March 68 and a few weeks later in the UK. However filming was originally scheduled for one year earlier so it is possible that some of the Spits were ready in 1967. “The Devils Brigade” had its USA premiere in May 1968 so I assume filming was done in 67.

In “Enemy Coast Ahead” (by Guy Gibson) he mentions an incident in which the gunners on his Hampden brought down a Do 17 by flying alongside it and hitting it with their dorsal and ventral Vickers “K ” guns.

anyone have any idea what happened to the dakota used in the film the eagle has landed?

I used to have a 1977 edition of “Photoplay” which had a feature on the making of the film. The article said that the Dakota used was loaned by an air cargo firm based in Jersey and was returned to them after filming concluded.
I don’t have any more details.

Would be good to see Airline again, would look very dated production wise tho.
Secret army is another series I’d like to see

“Secret Army” has been available on DVD since 2004 . I recently bought the entire series (42 episodes) for £39.99. It was a special offer from DD video.

One episode of SA features “Sally B”” circa 1978 and a (taxying but not flying) Lysander features in a few episodes.
