If they could get a B52 into Duxford…
dozens of big aircraft have flown into Cosford over the years at least 3 Vulcans 2 Victors, VC10, Comet…
Do you know how they got the B52 into Duxford?
Hi Blue_2.
The tank hatches are in no4 freight bay? If so then 12 tank port and starboard. It’s a fun tank to remove (sort of).
Looking back again the two fuel lines are for the HDU if I remember correctly. I take it you don’t have a mk17b HDU in there?
Good replies. Indeed, RR did a fair bit of research (stress/strain gauged engines) after a number of zero stage failures. Their recommendations for us were: Ground runs: always directly into wind. Take off with a rolling engine acceleration not stationary. Just popped into mind, that’s all.
Btw Blue, you do point Lindy directly into wind when ground-running the engines? It was stipulated by RR after they stress tested the engines to find out the causes of the failures.
Oh yes I had forgotten. Bashing all the “Noddy Caps” back into shape was regular thing in those days…..
Head pad and something else…………. Btw I saw a fair few of those zero stages letting loose. Quite an experience.

I wish!!!!
Btw I have a head cushion for the crew door. Never been fitted!
Out of personal experience the Jag was a better and easier a/c to service compared to such things as Lightnings, Buccaneers, Hunters, Victors etc.
Btw Ian. In my front garden. Recognise it?

Thanks Ian. Reply sent.
Hi Ian.
Yes ’82-end ’86. Of the 24 K2’s built I serviced 23. XL513 had demised before I arrived. I saw XL232 burn, XL190 have a series of mishaps. Removed more engines, pods, RAT’s, fire extinguishers and climbed into fuel tanks than you would believe. Much more components of course too numerous to mention. Ground runs obviously, lots and lots of ground runs. I served for VSF and 55, the blue spear boys. I even fixed one at Edwards Airforce Base!
Btw the designation B1a(K)2p means two point conversion (mk20 pods) but no HDU. The bomb doors are still fitted. I believe it is the only two pointer that survived complete.
You’re better off asking Roger Brooks for all the details……
I know XH648 was only “parked” at Duxford. Officially it was still on the RAF inventory. I am talking about the ’70’s/’80’s though.
Wonder which mug is going to be going round all those engine door fasteners re-tightening them this weekend then….
Depends on how the fuel load is situated.
Both squadrons also use a cut-down HDU winding handle to give the door keys grip. It only got bad when the Dzus fasteners were worn.
Do you also check that the engine anti-icing valves work during a ground run?
I take it you trail and wind the pod hoses now and then?
