Look what Schnuck in!
The last of the Ainscough trucks left yesterday. 13 curtain siders in total to move BAE Heritage from Manchester. Somehow with some very hard work from Millom’s staff and Ainscough’s, we managed to fit everything in.
We left the door open and somebody even managed to squeeze a WW1 German Tank in! Now is the start of a massive re-organisation inside and out. Unit 2 is now almost ready to be opened to the public again. What would be really nice now would be some more volunteers. We realise we are out on a limb here in Cumbria but we now have some of the best aircraft restoration facilities including workshop machinery and stores right here in Millom. (courtesy of BAE Heritage) There are also some really interesting aircraft projects to work on.
Pics are in before and after order.
More pics to follow as the massive shuffle and unload progresses.
lightning and canberra parked
Just a few more pics of how work is progressing at Millom. I thought people would be interested to see the inside of the canberra. The Lightnting and JP are immacculate inside and out but my camera battery went. More to follow.
Dismemberment
Timbo,
We can only assume that the bolts were stubborn. As this job was contracted out we don’t know for sure yet. They were not just any old cowboys though. They must have hit the time limit. I know we did on our Shorts 360 tail fin. It broke my heart to have to chop through with the Stihl saw after spending 2 days in the cramped compartment carefully undoing hundreds of bolts to no avail.
Thursdays haul.
Canberra came today, not quite how we expected it. We thought it was going to be chopped outboard of wheels or engines, so this will be pretty tricky to re-attach to fuselage. As they say, beggars can’t be choosers and there has to be a balance between time available for dismantling, cost and preservation. At least it has been saved from the scrap man.
Lightning nose section is here and so is the JP. The cranes arrive tomorrow to continue the unloading.
BBC
I see what you mean Bob. It will be something to do with licence fees.

Spit cockpit kits.
Keep your eyes on the RAF Millom website which is about to be reloaded. There will be some “IKEA” flatpack style Spit cockpit section kits for sale on there soon. (full scale) My mate has finally finished the CAD layout for CNC routing of kits. They will look like the ones on the RAF Millom Flypast thread but much better.
Cracking job James “Captain Slow” May, well done to all involved!
First BAE bits arrive
Here we have the first bits arriving from BAE Heritage. The vampire is a tricky enough load but if you know the roads from the M6 to Millom, it must have been a nightmare moving the Canberra outer wing sections! (other flatbed in pic) The big move is tomorrow. Watch this space.
Flightsim.com
There is a short wav file on flightsim.com but you need to register and “search file libraries” for “mamba”. It was the last result of about 10 entries. Seems to be a fly past noise.
Would love to see the finished product, I have tried a couple of Gannets available for FS but although they looked good from the outside, none of them would fly realistically. They didnt look or sound realistic from the inside either.
Wishing your friend good luck with his project.
Patty
The Gannet, only it’s mother could love it. Well, maybe me aswell !
Bede BD5 donated
I now know the name of the gentleman who kindly donated the BD5 to us. His name is Rick Lucas.
I have been told by a mate that the Bond Museum in the last post is very good. It is in Keswick.
Another useful website etc.
http://www.alliedflightgear.com/index.html is a good start point.
I recently accquired a FAA second pattern helmet from ebay for 70 odd quid. They are a good lookalike for a type B helmet. Less type Bs available so they will go for a lot more. See the above site for pics (the one shown is in white, I think most are brown).
Also scroll down this link a bit for some pics of Izavailable’s type B helmet reproduction, looks really good. http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=25447&page=4
Check our dummy on this link, he is a bit effeminate looking and only the mask helmet and goggles are authentic.

Whitehaven Maritime/Air Show
This is the display we took to Whitehaven Festival. It was hugely successful and will no doubt bring in a few more visitors. Amazing how many locals never knew we existed. I know this might sound like an exaggeration but there was not one minute that there was an empty seat in the simulators. The 3 staff on the dispay are all worn out now. The pics were taken before they opened the gates to our pier (before you ask, “where are all these punters then?”.
Bede BD5
This is our latest exhibit to arrive donated by a local buisnessman. I will post his name on my next post as I have forgotten it!
We belive the kit was not finished due to the CAA not allowing BD5s to be flown in the UK. The aircraft was reputedly difficult for fast jet pilots to fly, let alone a homebuilder with a PPL. It is a prop kit with no engine.
The other picture is our new trailer that the sims bolt onto for travelling to shows.
RIAT
Here here SEAFURY! I was there on Sat and witnessed the same as you. Well done to all those volunteers. The Air Cadets were busy doing dirty work all day too from what I could see.
US airforce had a C17 open to the public. I walked through for a look, you could have had a game of football (or should I say soccer) in there!
Very well organised, toilets in the jubilee gardens were clean and no queues, worth the extra 21 quid. Even worth the £25 on the day. Loads of spare seats too.
Re. travelling, I either go really really early or usually just take the motor bike (queues irrelevant!). It took about 50 mins from my mates house in Didcot. We set off at 08:30 and saw the first aircraft (Hornet) take off from our Jubilee Garden deck chairs.
Me109 Simulator Now Installed
Here are a few pics of our new simulator. Finally running after trailer and computer trouble. As you can see we will have to ban staff from playing on it in the interests of restoration work!
It is hooked up to the Spitfire so you can dogfight.
