    Shorts 360 latest pics

Here are some pics of G-SSWO sporting her new mockup props and spinners. Compared to the “before” picture she looks a lot more like an aeroplane now than a shed!

    Progress Update Part 4

Behind the scenes both Lynne and Stephanie have been working tirelessly to keep the library and records updated and catalogued. All of the late Gilbert Rothery’s files have been painstakingly archived for easier looking up of information. If you are looking for books or info (lots of info on personnel serving in Cumbria and North Lancs from WW2) then try us. There is a good chance we will have it. There are also many duplicate issues of aviation magazines eg. Pilot and Air Pictorial going back decades that are for sale for very reasonable prices.

Here are some pictures of volunteer Geoff Hartell’s Merlin restoration project. In the pics of the cylinder heads you can see the specially fabricated head removal tool. This will be a running engine when he has finished with it.

    Progress Update Part 3

To accompany the Spitfire simulator, a Messerschmitt 109 is under construction, and although it looks like a wooden bathtub at the moment, it will look like the real thing once the canopy goes on. It will be a lot easier than the spitfire canopy being pretty much square!

The Flying Flea that was saved from being burned on Canaerfon’s fire dump is being restored by our resident carpenter John Phillips. He has replaced any rotten or woodworm infested parts and the fuselage is now complete. It can be seen on the Part 1 update post behind the Shorts spinners. He has made the rudder fin assembly which is now awaiting covering.

Jetstream G-EEST has had new windows made and fitted (window material courtessy of Tescos Whitehaven, Thanks!). Window fitters are, Banana Man (Curator Glynn in an unusual shot of him working) and Dennis “The Bog” Gleaves. See pics .

    Progress Update Part 2

The latest arrivals have been the Lancashire Aircraft Company Prospector fuselage and some missiles. The prospector has been completely stripped of panels and is undergoing a ground up restoration (see pic).

Among the missiles are the Firestreak and the Sea Eagle cruise missile.

    Progress Update Part 1

It may seem like a while since there has been an update but we have still been busy.

First of all Shorts 360 G-SSWO has been getting a lot nearer to completion. Windows and hatches and panels have been made including the main door that our volunteer carpenter John Phillips made. We couldn’t get hold of the real thing. The things in the picture that look like something like Madonna would wear are John’s scratch built spinners. We could not get hold of shorts props either so we have made some mock-up props as well.

    More Spitfire Pics

Those photos are very good indeed David. I have set the Whirlwind one as my desktop!

We have some better pics of the Spitfire now including one of member of staff, Rosie Smith climbing out.

Class photos Damian. I do volunteer work at Millom and I’m sure we could arrange for you to pop inside and turn off the lights some time. I think the Tornado F3 would make a good shot.

Are you aware of the Cumbrian aviation forum? Chris Gurney who runs it is into photography in a big way. http://cumbriaaviation.proboards106.com/index.cgi

    Spitfire Simulator has landed.

The Spitfire Simulator is now up and running in the museum and linked to a second PC so you can fly with a real life enemy or wingman in combat. Staff are on hand to help you get the best out of this interactive exhibit if you have no flying or PC experience.

Work has already started on the Me109 which will house the 2nd computer and flying controls. Millom ATC are building an 80% scale Spitfire to go with the full size one to accomodate those smaller pilots.

Disscussions are underway about bringing Old Ben (HS 748) indoors to finish his refit as a disabled accessible flight simulator. Moisture has affected some of the simulator equipment. This will require chopping him on the front edge of the door to make him fit in the display hall. He will look like the photo below.

    Any views would be appreciated.

    Update

Some more pics of the latest arrivals here. Tornado F3 cockpit (complete interior) and an array of roadworthy landrovers.

The 748 sim has made its first flight and is now getting all the internal and external cosmetics done. The original controls work well connected to the PC.

See also Chipmunk cockpit and Spitfire cockpit.

    Update

Here are the latest updates from RAF Millom.

The Shorts 360 wings etc arrived yesterday and G-SSWO was rapidly reassembled thanks to John Robsons and their hiab truck “Lucifer”.

Flight sim has yokes installed made from LDV Pilot Van (how appropriate) but I forgot to get a pic… doh!
Seats are also from same type of van, kindly donated by Lea McMeekin our (very) local scrap dealer.

Pictured below is the latest acquisition, a 1968 Landrover Ambulance.

We are now on the lookout for the missing doors that you can see in the pics of the Shorts 360. Any ideas?

    Latest Arrivals

A few of the latest arrivals, most recent being the zero timed and inhibited merlin meteor tank engine manufactured in the 60’s. Will fit right in the centurion apparently. It is covered in a thick coating of wax so hopefully the gaskets will be good enough to run it? Came in the original Rolls Royce packing crate.

The German U-Boat gyroplane is on loan and the Olympia glider has been donated. Just under the glider some of the engine collection can be seen.

New control cables etc installed and tested today in Old Ben, just need yokes. Any ideas other than hacking car steering wheels to make them look authentic? That’s the plan if we can’t source any soon.

    Millom Latest

Here are a couple of piccies of the latest developments. I understand people’s concerns about random aircraft but I think it is worth dying trying. I have been busy with my ex Yeovilton airframe fitter mate working hard on them. Cheifly the 748 “Old Ben”. The controls have been removed and overhauled and we are currently re-fitting them. We are still looking for a plug door though.

The simple solution to the aircraft not worth saving or not fitting in with collection policy comes in the form of a gas axe. If it aint working out, then it gets chopped up and weighed in. Now that’s speculating to accumulate!
It would be great if we could have a line up of taxiable Ansons, Oxfords, Martinets and Bothas to show off on the Haverigg (RAF Millom) Airfield. However, I would imagine there aren’t too many of the latter two types around because they were scrapped and the airfeld is now criminal/animal farmland.

But hey, look back earlier in the thread and see how Old Ben the 748 looked when he left Blackpool and just after he arrived at Millom. A disabled accessible flight simulator has to be better than the scrap pile. To get an idea of the type of sim it will be. Check out my last build on you tube by searching for “wideview” and look for my username. There is a link in the more info bit with pics and article.

The Baliol and Firefly are now on mobile frames, see pics.
