All (understandable) frustrations aside, personally I am very glad these aircraft still exist. Yes, it’s a big shame that they were parked outside. But better than to be scrapped due to lack of space. That’s what usually happened.

I heard once that a technical university in Delft, The Netherlands, had an interesting collection of Japanese aircraft, captured after WW2. In the 1950s or so, they were in such bad state that when the university needed more space, they were simply scrapped… How truly sad is that! 🙁 We could have had a whole Japanese collection here in Europe…
(Note: I can’t confirm this story in any way. I just heard it from my aeronautical teacher when I was studying aero engineering. The only type he could remember was an Aichi floatplane… How many of those are still remaining these days… 🙁 )

First of all, it definitely has 3 engines. You can see two rims behind the fuselage. (If not, then why would they have extended the right engine nacelle!!! ;))
So three engines – 100% sure.

The story of forced landing and return to own airbase sounds very plausible. I’m not a pilot myself (aeronautical engineer, though), but I see no real problems why an empty unarmed B-17 wouldn’t be able to fly on 3 engines. Assymmetric? Yes, but once all engines are running it’s not that bad. You could even fly the left engine on full power and the right ones at a lower setting. Looks perfectly airworhty to me. Two engines… now that would start to worry me more 🙂

Nice collection of parts, there! 1:1 scale model kits! 🙂
    Very cool!

The Vengeance is even more exciting. Airworthy too, I suppose? Can’t wait to see that fly… 😮

    Thanks TNZ.

I think this design would work alright. Aerodynamically it’s very similar to the proven Messerschmitt Me 163. The greater sweepback (compared to the Me 163) will ensure stability despite the relatively longer rear section.

My biggest issue with the design is: it doesn’t have a bomb bay! A bit odd for a WW2 bomber… Perhaps it carried radio or TV guided missiles under its wings, but there’s not enough info on this machine to confirm that. Hence it’s shown in clean configuration.

I was sceptical at first but I think he pretty much nailed it as best as he could.

Exactly! I’ve not seen it yet (but will soon!) but regarding DiCaprio… In general I really don’t like him in movies, but I feel this movie role fits him just perfectly! 😀

Thanks Jonathan, I’m glad you like it.

Monogram’s book is out already since late this summer.

Is it May yet? I can’t stand this depressing winter!!!!!!! 😀

    Thanks guys and girl! 🙂

Drossel, the Cosina lens isn’t perfect, but it’s very good value for money. I had a look at a new Sigma lens last month (75-400mm with image stabilising) but thought I may have better uses for £900!!! 😮 And I never liked Sigma lenses anyway… the stiff focus rings are very unpleasant to work with and I hate zoom rings too. I don’t think I’ll ever be able/willing to afford the Canon equivalents either… Hurray for Cosina 🙂

Eddie, are you using 3D Studio MAX? If so, please download my E-light MAXScript. It’s an easy-to-learn tool for helping creating more realistic lighting.
The trick with textures is rather simple: make them as big as your computer can handle! 🙂 The real “magic” is in the lighting and material setup. It can really boost the looks of a model.
And don’t underestimate post-processing either. Just compare a raw render:
    http://skyraider.allaboutwarfare.com/files/modelling/NA-57_900_raw_render.jpg (yuk!!!)
    …with an extensively edited one:
    http://skyraider.allaboutwarfare.com/files/modelling/NA-57_900_colour.jpg (more realistic)
    …or even black&white:
    http://skyraider.allaboutwarfare.com/files/modelling/NA-57_900_bw_scratched.jpg (even more realistic)
I hope this gives you some ideas.
Not a bad model, by the way, and the textures are a good start but need bump/spec/reflection/etc… But improving the lighting setup will already make a huge difference.
    Good luck!

Hi John, it sounds very interesting but I’m afraid I won’t have the time for this on short notice. Unlike most profile artist I do my work in 3D (opposed to 2D) which takes considerably more time. On the Mustang artwork I’ve spent about 125 hours. That was a bit excessive perhaps (I normally work much faster), but I still expect the triple Bristol birds to take at least 200 hours total. Since I do this stuff in my spare time, I’m afraid it would take many months before I get it finished (especially since I have several projects running at the moment).

But I suggest you post your request on http://www.airwarfareforum.com as well. It’s a very nice aviation forum with some very talented (2D) profile artists. I am sure you’ll find someone interested there! 🙂

I’ve already posted a request for you here:

I didn’t even know where were still any F-models around! Great stuff! 😎

I’ve seen P-40s at Duxford several times and they are really great performers, able to give a spirited show. Keep us updated! 🙂
