    1) As Arthuro and Global Press want to express is that since the first press release from SNECMA about the 9t M88, perhaps some breakthought allowed to dodge that problem.

…..or forgot the problem all together.

DAtas from the SNECMA website (that has been erased since then)

    M88-2
    Diameter/Caliber 700mm 27.56-in
    Length 3.5 m 12-ft
    Max Weight 897 kg 1,978-lb
    Thrust 75.5 kN 17,000-lb
    Airflow 65Kg/s

    M88-3
    Diameter/Caliber 790mm 31.1-in
    Length 3.6 m 12-ft
    Max Weight 985 kg 2,172-lb
    Thrust 89.9 kN 20,250-lb
    Airflow 72Kg/s.

These numbers are just a little bit strange.
    Thrust is increasing by 20%
Frontal area is increasing by 27%
Airflow mass is increasing by 11%

Mirage IIIE started with AIM-9B, continued with J and P models and finished his life with AIM-9P3

Mirage F-1 fleet started with AIM-9P3 and still are operating AIM-9J-ULI, quite similar to the AIM-9L(I)

    that was your question?

    No.
The question is whether the AIM-9 family, could use the full spectrum of available modes.
    For example, are you aware if the Sidewinder can be slaved on the F1’s radar;

yes I know that, in my discussion with JPL during the latest paris air show he said that the AdA thinks that the current M88 are powerfull enough and that the AdA bosses prefer lower ownership costs rather than seeing its pilots having more fun !

But the idea of a rafale with 2*9t of thrust is quite thrilling and more appealing from a forumer standpoint. At least it can be an option for export for a minimum added cost vs the gain of performance, especially in markets where air superiority is the first requirement. It will boost its performance in that field against the typhoon which is regarded as mostly an air superiority fighter.

But I agree that the reduction of ownership costs is a more sensible idea.

To my understanding so far, an increment in M88’s thrust, will come by increasing the engine’s (compressor’s only??) diameter.

If this is the case, how easy will it be to incorporate it, to the rafale?

I wouldnt call it technical problem.

It is more of a choice.
    A policy 😉
And there is nothing wrong, for a country to support the full depth of its own products.
This is synergy. And most of the time synergy produce better results.

HAF chose the magic+MICA for the M2000, but that meant a lot of cost.
Which of course it was less than integrating the AIM9+AMRAAM, but still a lot!

As I already wrote this is a choice.
Choice for the seller, choice for the buyer.

    PS
Swerve, as I wrote, the AIM-9 were operational on the Hellenic F1CG too.
But were never FULLY integrated. Some functions dont work! (IIRC the missile cannot be slaved on the radar)
I have no info on the Spanish F1s, but I bet it is the same!

File mou, trust me it is.

Maybe you should ask some of the HAF engineers.
Since the days they were trying to make the ΑΙΜ-9 work with the F-1CG.

Besides the efforts of both Greek and French, it was never done properly.

Yeah I agree that weapons integration is an issue when it comes to the Rafale. How much of an issue I don’t know. You would have to know what the Rafale team proposes in terms of deadline and cost to integrate other weapons to the Rafale. Surely if a customer requires a weapon, integration has plenty of time to be carried out before delivery of the first Rafale to the customer, but then how much would it cost?

    Only in theory.
In practice even integrating a sidewinder into a french fighter is so expensive and time consuming, that becomes useless.

    It goes to mentality

The French always try to sell french weapons along with their fighters, as if all other are of lower quality, and efficiency.

Some time it works some times it does not.

More than twice as many Norwegians support Gripen over JSF according to a national poll for state owned TV.

Many undecided but that’s a pretty low number for the F-35 IMO considering that the country has never flown Swedish jets…

I think the best prospects is the UAE (pretty likely), and maybe Greece (less likely). Both countries are operators of Mirage 2000, and a deal could be made to take some of them back, and would be able to use the Mica and other french weapons they already have.

    Nic
UAE want to get ride of the M2000, for reasons I am not aware of , but can imagine.

HAF OTOH, is quite happy with the Mirages. They dont consider exchanging them for rafales although Pr. Sarkosy offered an agreement like that.

IMHO Greece is getting 40 EFs next year. Unless the crisis is too big in which case we are going for 40 F-16sBsomething.

Of course when coming to politics and politician you never know.

How can chaltiel say the aircraft locked the target without a single emission, when it had to emit the laser beam of the rangefinder? That’s pretty deceiving…

Also, I don’t understand why the OSF or an IIR sensor couldn’t range a target if the 3D shape of the target is stored in a databased. If you see a 3D object and know it’s size, then surely you can figure out the range by comparing the 3D shape’s size that you detected to the dimentions of the 3D object stored in the database. Or are those sensors still not powerful enough to get the shape of enemy planes?

    Nic

    How accurate can that be?

Quite interesting information this video contains.

When in the air @40000ft, flying supersonic it only burn twice the fuel, than on the ground in idle!
Also some nice info abt the MMI.
