    Nice pics everyone 🙂

    Blimey, 2 x JASDF 747-400!

How big was the Japanese delegation?

Mitsubishi F-2 has apparently got Japanese-designed RAM on critical areas.

I heard that RAF Tornados had RAM treatment before deployment for Desert Storm too.

I agree Gripen seems a natural choice.

Although Sweden is now in the EU, it is not part of NATO & so is relatively “neutral” in that regard.
I don’t know enough about Swiss politics to know if this is an important or not.

How about an export version of the AIDC Ching Kuo? 😀

It would have been interesting if the Mirage F1 powered by the M53, with radar/avionics/weapon upgrades was more succesful.

I think it was in the competition for a NATO multi-role fighter vs. the F-16 in the late 1970s & lost out.

How meaningful is a thread like this?

Is this a honeytrap for trolls?

It will only ever be entirely subjective.

An F-16 AFTI based design would be cool 😀

Add AESA, Eo/IR system, TVC, CFTs & you would have a pretty tough customer.

I was also thinking along the lines of a FS-X/F-2 derivation….

Wouldn’t a supercruise capable F-16 need at least some aerodynamic refinements, if not as radical as F-16XL.

I do recall reading (years ago) that F-16XL was capable of supercruise. May be when flown by NASA?

I’ll be watching this space with interest.

    Nice pics.

I hope those cockpits are armoured!

How do these armed PC-9s stack up against EMBRAER A-29 Super Tucanos?

The latter were purpose-designed COIN variants of the Super Tucano – are they better equipped & armed?

Dude – the questions suggests a bit more research into Asian geopolitics!

China backed N. Korea during the Korean War & still supports Pyongyang.

China & India have previously fought a border war & relations are still cool.

    S. Korea is a close US ally & the US & China have fragile political relations.

The selection of the F-15 over Rafale/Typhoon by South Korea & Singapore was probably as much political as they were military/technical.

These countries are long-term allies of the USA & the benefits in ensuring close military cooperation/interoperability were likely strong factors in these competitions.

I don’t doubt that the F-15K/SG are extremely potent combat aircraft – but the basic design is over 30 years old.

The F/A-18E/F is a capable carrier-borne strike fighter. There have already been many threads about the relative merits of the Super Hornet – I won’t repeat them.

If Australia really wants an interim fighter, then a lease would be a good idea.

Are Australia’s F/A-18As already reaching the end of their airframe lives?

Bet the Norwegians thought the “dot” on the radar was going a bit too fast to be Santa Claus! 😀

I read something about this in City A.M. – but nowhere else.

One could look at major fighter competitions in the recent past – many threads on these, & there is a political dimension of course, but the winners were AFAIK:

    South Korea: F-15K
    Singapore: F-15SG

In both these competitions, Eurofighter Typhoon, Rafale & Super Hornet were contenders (?)

Looked at another way, we could compare export order success (again remember political & cost considerations)

    Eurofighter Typhoon: Austria, Saudi Arabia
    Rafale: Nil (nil confirmed)
Gripen: South Africa, Hungary, Czech Republic, Thailand
    F/A-18E/F Super Hornet: Australia

I don’t think Australia had a formal competition as the Super Hornet is an interim solution, until JSF arrives (eventually)

On another thread recently, someone alluded to the different experiences Libya had with its French vs. Russian combat aircraft.

My impression was that overall, Libya was more satisfied with its french tactical combat aircraft than its Russian combat aircraft.

In addition, there was a suggestion that French-trained fighter pilots were possibly better trained than the Russian trained ones.

These are the other aspects of a combat aircraft purchase that nations have to consider when making procurement decisions, I suppose.
