For a more affordable solution (I assume), how about the HAL Dhruv?

I am sure HAL would like some more export orders. 🙂

How much is a HAL Dhruv, anyway?

The Mexican economy must be stronger than I assumed it was.

Fair point about using typhoons/F-22s, the Russians might get valuable ELINT/SIGINT intel.

May be the RAF could resurrect some Jaguar GR3s with the latest Mk 106 turbofans, armed with overwing/underwing ASRAAMs & painted in air-superiority grey to do Tu-95 interceptions 😀

USAF could use F-16Cs painted in “Aggressor” pseudo-Russian paint schemes to intercept these Bears.

Imagine the nice photos that would result! 😀

Wasn’t landing at the old HK Kai Tak airport a bit of a challenge?

I landed there many times as a passenger & saw many planes land as a ground spectator.

A fair few sharp turns at low level involved, as far as I can recall.

Perhaps Putin’s muscle flexing with his strategic bombers will help proponents of new/next generation fighter purchases in NATO countries.

Ironically, if Russia maintains strategic bomber “patrols”, the pressure to cut “Cold War” era 4/5th generation fighters (F-22, typhoon, Rafale etc) numbers will ebb slightly.

I’m not saying Tornado F3s, F-15s, Mirage 2000s can’t do the “interceptions”, but these aircraft are getting long in the tooth 😉

    hyperwarp,

can SL afford any new fighters at the moment?

I’ve visited SL & I like it, shame about the politics 🙁

Would SL be able to acquire any 2nd hand upgraded Mirage III/5/50s e.g if/when SAAF retires its Atlas Cheetahs or Chilean Panteras?

What about the Chengdu J-7G/J-7MG? I would guess they are relatively inexpensive.

    Naval fighter

Very interesting thread, which did apparently become a typhoon vs rafale thread, despite good early intentions……

If I may go back to the earlier question of a navalised Typhoon or other options for the future UK RN carriers, what about the Super Hornet F/A-18E/F if JSF goes pear-shaped?

It is a proven design, with presumably low technical risks in adapting it for RN use.

If an attempt was made to navalise Typhoon, I can just imagine the cost escalation & programme delays….

    $7.3 billion?

That’s quite a chunk of change.

How much does a new USN CVN cost nowadays? US$3 billion?

How much would a carrier battle group cost?

F-22 – very nice piece of kit, but a tad pricey. 🙂

As a UK taxpayer, I find it incredibly frustrating how little we spend on defence,
despite the fact we are engaged in not one, but two wars.

As the Typhoon takes over more roles from the Tornado, it would make financial sense to increase the emphasis in tasking of Tornado F3s towards SEAD, since I asume the Typhoon will be the UK’s primary air defence/superiority fighter.

As an aside, would the Jaguar (now prematurely retired) have been a good SEAD platform, with a couple of ECM pods & ALARMs?

Australia’s neighbours may not be too well equipped, but expect to see the PLAN making more frequent & more distant deployments in future.

One day, PLAN will have an operational aircraft carrier.
Also, PLAN has Sovremenny class destoyers equipped with long-range anti-ship missiles, so RAM PDM or a CIWS is a sensible suggestion.

    props vs jets

I’ve always wondered what effect, if any two propellers turning at high-speed only a few metres away fro the AEW radar would have on the E-2 Hawkeye radar performance.

I would guess this would be a big factor in favour of jet-powered AEW aircraft vs. turboprop-powered AEW aircraft.

    Anybody know the answer?

Why not buy more EH-101 Merlins, rather than buy a new helo type?

Would it not make sense to keep the logistical support as simple as possible?

    C-X export potential?

I know Japan has restrictions on arms sales, but do you think there could be an export potential for the C-X?

It would be inconceivable that the C-X would be armed in any way.
Presumably export sales would help reduce the unit cost through economies of scale…?

The P-X does look a little oddly proportioned – as was said above, maybe a stretched version could be made in future? Wouldn’t it be more efficient, with more internal volume?
