You just couldn’t make this stuff up…

This would be funny if it wasn’t so serious. What is this country coming to? 🙁

    Oh dear!

Two plane crashes in Africa within 24hrs?

I have never flown in/across Africa. Aviation safety is just one factor…

    RIP

I wonder if ASEAN could be used as a forum for support for those members which claim these rocks?

I realise ASEAN is about economic & political cooperation only, but perhaps it could be of diplomatic use?

Having said that, this being ASEAN, they probably don’t want to antagonise China, as a major trading partner (& the biggest kid on the block).

In some ways, I hope they don’t discover any oil in the Spratlys, otherwise there will be trouble 🙁

I’ve always thought it would make sense for the RAF to buy some medium-sized ex-airline jets e.g. A300-600R, 767-300ER for international base-base ferry flights for men & equipment – to supplement the Tristars (& without the tanker role).

I guess the new RAF A330 MRTTs will make this scenario very unlikely.

Good to see the occasional sensible MoD decision!

Will the Baltic states ever be able to patrol their own skies?

Some second-hand (or third-hand) fighters must be affordable in small numbers if shared amongst Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia.

Most of the contributing NATO nationsa are experiencing recession of sovereign-debt crises, isn’t it time for the Baltic states to pull their own weight?

    Nice pics! 🙂

Some of the aircraft e.g. Tu-214, Il-96, Il-62 have large dorsal fairing. Are these for
    SATCOM?

Do these aircraft have dual civil/military roles?

Hats off to the photographer! 😀

    Nice pics!

I think I read somewhere that Singapore Airlines flew DC-10s?

    Any pics of SIA DC-10s?

    What about the pilots?

Will they be “third sex” too?

    Blimey.

How much does the UK MoD cost to run?

How many civil servants? More than you can shake a stick at, I’d wager 😡

I’ve also wondered why the UK doesn’t buy more hardware from abroad, instead of reinventing the wheel over & over again.

In some ways a logical decision.

It was a shame the Cheetahs were retired.

I have a soft spot for these old Mirage III/5/50 derivatives with canards & various upgrades… 😀

You mean Aerofolt is not doing the patriotic thing and buying Russian Il-96-400s?

    Shock horror!

    😉

I quite like the 777, I would not flying in an Aeroflot 777 at all. Has the service improved?

    Interesting name for warship.

Presumably if it is for export, the Ukrainians are not planning on marketing this to any English-speaking countries 😀

Technically, I also think Japan could do it.

But it’s hard to ignore Japan’s 10-20 year long recession. A clean-sheet design would consume vast amounts of money & take a very long time.

F-22 is perhaps the obvious answer (but I understand US Congress is reluctant to approve export).
It would be interesting if Japan went for Eurofighter Typhoon or licence-built F-15 Silent Eagle with Japanese mods 😀

I wonder if there are any statisticians or actuaries on here.

What are the chances of two large airliners from the same airline suffering engine trouble shortly after take-off from the same airport in 2 days?

    Pure coincidence?
