I was reading an article somewhere this week (Flight Int’l?) that Japan is giving serious consideration to the Typhoon as the US is reticent to offer the F-22 for export.
A Japanese order would be a real coup. 🙂
Was this what is known to laymen like myself as an “air pocket”.
Also, I note the euphemism “sudden change of altitude”, which sounds bland & un-threatening. I’ll bet the passengers on board will have something to say about such euphemisms.
I always keep my seat-belt on.
“best” has still not been defined, but I recently flew a 1-stop long-haul flight on an A330-300 & a 777-300ER. I preferred the 777-300ER, but it was a newer aircraft.
The 777-300ER is a LONG bird!
I had not considered how similar the J-8II is to the Su-15 in appearance before – nice pics in the initial post! 🙂
It’s very interesting to consider the history of the J-8 programme, especially the J-8II.
If you start with a Mig-21 & enlarge it, give it twin engines, then a nosecone, eventually, you get something similar to a Su-15!
The Chinese could have saved so much time if they had started with a Su-15 & who knows what that aircraft could have evolved into 😉
What do you mean by “best”?
It’s interesting that the Chengdu J-10 wasn’t even in the initial list. The J-10 is relatively modern & certainly relatively inexpensive to buy.
But as stated above, Brazil has a preference for Western designs. Maybe Brazil isn’t too comfortable initiating defence cooperation with China, a competitor “BRIC” country.
I think the worst turbulence I can recall was on a Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt (I think) to LHR, about 5-6 years ago
The plane was all over the place & it was rather frightening. It was not just relatively severe, but sustained – 30-45 minutes. Seat belt sign was on most of the flight.
I fly at least twice (2 return trips) a year & have done so for over 15 years so I have a fair amount of experience (but obviously not as much as many on this forum). I hate turbulence.
Gosh. I hope that the Blackjack crew wasn’t looking for Venezuela. They’d be disappointed if they were 😉
Blimey!
That is one scary looking hole. 😮
Well done to the pilots for bringing the passengers safely back to terra firma.
Are these winglets metal or carbon fibre?
They do look pretty cool 😀
I have been wondering about a large medium range turboprop airliner for some time.
I know there were passenger carrying commercial variants of the C-130 Hercules, but clearly not very sucessful, compared to jetliners.
How about a stretched EADS A-400?
Are turboprops more expensive to maintain than turbofans?
I would fly in a civilian A-400 airliner rather than an equivalent jetliner if I knew it was less damaging to the environment.
Toast?
That advert for the PL9C AAM/SAM is very interesting.
I am particularly intrigued by the photo of the twin AA mounts with some PL9C SAMs bolted on. Given that these AA mounts are open i.e. not enclosed. what happens to the sailors in the other turret when they fire a SAM?
Toasted sailors?
Best ever Mig-21?
Shenyang J-8F Finback 😀
:diablo:
Thanks for replies.
The aircraft I was thinking about was an A340. I know people on such a flight when it was announced that they were jettisoning fuel & had to RTB.
Must have been a tense time 🙁
Do these chevrons incur any aerodynamic or propulsion penalties?
