Good to see something fresh and different.

The aircraft adds to the subject matter rather than relying on it alone to be the subject matter.

Sometimes these work, and sometimes they can look like a poor attempt at photographing a spec in the distance.

Well these have worked very well, nice.

The ‘rusty’ metal finish seems starnge inside the new building, but you have to remember it is part of the design along with the ‘dark’ and ‘light’ sides to the building.

The darker side (no window lights) represents the darker side, MAD, Nuclear Bombers etc, whilst the light side represents the lighter side of the cold war if thats possible, the humanitarium stuff like the Berlin AIrlift and the fall of the Berlin Wall etc. Do think they need one of the old Gatow flight Chipmunks in there though to complete the East West Germany story.

Folks its has been mentioned on several threads and there is now an update on the General Aviation thread on this forum.

Please dont start having a moan about lack of publicity etc etc, this has been put together by a few small group of aviation minded folks. We are aware that the Airport has received some bad press and yes hopefully this can redress the balance a bit. We are all learning as we go along and there are already many things we could and would have done differently. Plaese remember this is not a Cosford, it is not a full blown display, but we believe there are enough items of interest to make it a pleasant day out – who wouldnt want to take a trip above a Steam railway in an aircraft from the same period!!

We plan to have gates open to the public from 9.30, £5 per car all day including all occupants (the majority of the car park money will be going to the air ambulance.) I will update you when I know about the times for the Spitfire.

This is our first event of this type and Im sure it will be a little rough around the edges but who knows what may grow from small acorns.

😉

Sorry you feel that my post turns it into another aimless lets have a fly in thread.

The intention had always been to organise a fly in at EGBO this year, but with Project Propellor heading there it seemed a good opportunity to tie the two together.

First post on this thread had W’ton as a standby plan, so we simply thought it would be better to make people aware of what was happening on the 24th. Perhaps we were just trying to make a visit by forum members more enjoyable with a bit more to see and do than on a normal day.

Sorry to hijack your thread but I noticed that you were possibly considering Wolverhampton as a venue to fly to. We would more than welcome any visitors at any time, but if possible we’d like to encourage yourselves and anyone else reading this thread to pay us a visit on the 24th June 2006. On the 24th Wolverhampton (Halfpenny Green) is playing host to Project Propellor (see http://www.projectpropeller.co.uk/ for info) which basically aims to is to match up WWII RAF air crew with current pilots and to gather together for a day at a significant location. Whilst project propellor will have their own speakers, lunch etc we are hoping to attract general visitors and plan to have a few attractions at the airport. Although details havent been finalised yet we are hoping to have items on display from cadets, vintage/miltary/steam vehicles on display, trade stalls, bouncy castle etc. The cafe ok will be open as normal but we should also have a BBQ’s on the go along with the fully licensed bar for the non aircrew !! Unfortunately this event has to be self funded, ie we have to pay for the extra loos etc so we are unable to offer many concesions but on the plus side, if we do raise any surplus then consideration will be given to some of the local charities, air scouts, cadets, air ambulance etc. To try to add an air of nostalgia for the ex aircrew members that will be attending through Project Propellor, and also to try to add a bit of variety at EGBO on the day, we have managed to secure one concession, any militarry marked aircraft, current / historic / overseas marks etc will not have to pay a landing fee. More information will be available soon, and I will try to keep you posted on any updates, confirmed attendances etc.

In short…
24th June 2006
EGBO Wolverhampton Airport (Halfpenny Green)
Fly In
3 Hard Runways plus the unlicencesed 350m grass strip should also be operational.
Free landing fees for any military marked aircraft.
Single engine aircraft, multi engined engined aircraft, helicopters and three axis microlights welcome.(Sadly we cannot accept flexiwing’s at the moment)
Ground attractions
A good, fun day out.

PPR is not essential but would be preferred if possible.

If you require any further information, please head up an email with Wolverhampton Fly In and forward to either ATC@wolverhamptonairport.co.uk or Perspective.i@btopenworld.com. We would love to update a list of possible attending aircraft types.

Thanks for reading.

And a few more images.

What also surprised me was the number of other aircraft that appeared to be operating within the vicinity of Old Warden and at times above Old Warden !! even as the display was under way. It looked like a few people hadnt looked at their NOTAMS.

Afraid I have to disagree with all the hype. I dont question the skills of the pilots involved, or the intentions of Red Bull trying to sponser something aviation related or even the whole concept of it, but in reality it just didnt work, well at Kemble it didnt. If you could have seen the looks around the crowd that would have told the story on its own. One of the film crews were alongside us, and they were struggling to find members of the crowd who would provide the ‘cheery grin’ and ‘how great that was’ comments.

I would love to have seen the pilots in solo routines but we managed to cut short the pain and head for the nearest pub.
