I remamber watching a TV serial based on the evnts in this book. a few years ago. I think it was made in Denmark, and dubbed into English.

It was shown on BBC4, if i remember correctly.

There wasn’t a dambusters museum at Scampton, when I was stationed there, 1978 to 1982, or in 1968 to 1970 (my Dad was stationed there), or in 1985 when I was there on my promotion course.

My Dad told me that he once provided guard for a Lancaster that crash landed, near Fiskerton, on the edge of Greetwell Quarry. Don’t know any further details.

Don’t forget both Yorks and Lancastrians.

My Dad flew Yorks in the immediate post war on the routss to the Middle and Far East, as far as Singapore. I can try and ask him about the codes, but as he’s 94, deaf, (sitting too close to four roaring merlins), he may not be of much help.

If this is the one adjacent to Cardiff airport, it was still open in 1991, as I was on my HGV driving course at St Athans and visited it s few times and took several photographs.

This is the HAL HF-24 Marut. It was designed and built in India for its Air Force.

Anyone else notice the glaring photographic error in the Typhoon article in this issue ?

A picture marked as showing a bubble canopied Typhoon flying past the Pyramids, is clearly a Tempest V/VI. The shape of the fin plus the post-war red-white-blue roundels give it away.

I was there with my father, a groundcrew veteran.

It was bitterly cold but he and all the other veterans were well looked after with provision of thermal blankets, headgear and hot drinks to keep them going.

No flypasts as very low cloud / mist reduced visibility to nearly zero, until after the luncheon.

Good entertainment provided by RAF band, RAF Waddington pipe band and RAF ladies choir.

Thanks Beaufighter VI. I did think it would involve a lot more “tin-bashing” than just a straight forward engine swop.

Re the Beaufighter, would it be possible to finish it as a Mk.II (2) using R.R. Merlin engines, or are the engineering problems greater than just changing the engine type ?

Could the white paint be a form of undercoat for dayglo colours ?

I know when I paint dayglo onto my model aircraft I apply white paint first to the relevant areas before painting the dayglo .

    Thanks for that Blue 2.

Please note I was not attempting to cast aspersions on the excellent, if somewhat problematical work you are carrying out on this Meatbox.

If the Stringbag picture was genuine, I could imagine its fuselage trying to tie itself up in knots, trying to cope with the torque from the engine and propeller.

Thanks Andy. I just wondered about it having seen the pictures of the internal problems caused by water being trapped (ie. the canopy release mechanism).
