Sounds like it was India’s mistake rather than Dassult’s, all the IAF requirements could have been met by the Mirage 2000 and there wouldn’t have been any need for the LCA fiasco. Instead, India is now having to fork out for not only the LCA, which is less capable than the Mirage 2K in the first place, but also an additional platform to make up for the LCAs shortcomings. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

This is why it needs to drop the LCA as soon as possible, or only order a few units, and go full steam ahead with local built MiG-35s with full TOT. All the other contenders come with too many political and logistical strings attached.

Can you expand that technically? A M2k vs LCA comparison. And how MiG-35 can fill the space of light fighter.

If some one says that the stats by 21Ankush is 10 year old, then its the correct comparison as most MiG-21 crashes in India peaked that time.

India and China are two states recognized by Russia. Correct me if I am wrong, but currently Russia has a One China policy and does not recognize Taiwan as a separate state? But if military sales start (especially in a strategic sense) between Taiwan & Russia, …that…. would be a huge policy shift. Not accepting independence but still a HUGE policy shift. things can get allot more complicated than Russia selling weapons to both India and PRC.

Does the same logic apply the China-Taiwan issue?

Its good in theory. For example, India says Tibet is a part of China (or whatever the wordings), bu, hosts Tibetan govt in exile. India imports Republic of China products while it says one China policy.

I need not expand on what US does.

Then, the British and Hong Kong press carried articles alleging that Russia and Taiwan were exploring possibilities of organizing the production of Kilo-type submarines on the island.

Russia and Taiwan have civil aviation linkages (direct).

You can get a Taiwan Visa here if you happen to be in Russia.

Representative Office in Moscow for the Taipei-Moscow Economic and Cultural Coordination Commission

Its pretty funny with China sometimes, you just got to say ‘one China” and do whatever you wish with Taiwan. With Dalai, China can afford to be more animated as the monks don’t have credible armed forces.

Sorry, PLAAF J-7 is branded new Mig-21 😉 Many are new with less than 10 years of history.
Their not yr bison built many decades ago.

    What does it mean?

lol~, true, and Taiwan made ASUS cards are indeed valuable, but China make up half the population of the world, so by any math it will be the more important trade partner.

No permanent enemies or permanent friends. Only permanent interest. Half the population will form opportunity and threat at the same time. But, Taiwan is a dependable friend. US policies might currently not very friendly, it does not mean that its hostile to Taiwan. After all Taiwan is a democracy. Russia is no more guided by cold war, if US can win friends, so can Russia.

So, if the ****in in the backyard theory holds true, china and India should stop buying from Russia. But, neither of them can afford it. A 3rd gen a/c (not reffering Taiwan’s so called 3rd gen) requires Russian agencies and engine. speaks volumes.

F-16’s are being deployed on both sides of the fence.

Russia helping Taiwan is purely money and diplomacy. Its making money on both sides of the fence.

US & France already backed off, why would Russia differ ?
China is to become the worlds largest economy, who want’s to **** in their back yard ?
Did anyone recognize Taiwan as a sovereign country ?

****in in the backyard is very exciting in international diplomacy. its the price to pay.

Are you kidding me? This is the perfect riposte for J-11B and numerous other blatant rip-offs of Russian tech.
Believe me, the Chinese need the Russians more than Russia-China.

The market for a twin-engined, cheaper JSF competitor must be pretty sizeable, besides the Russians will need a ‘cost-effective’ Fulcrum replacement in the future.

If Russia can arm India and China, why not China and Taiwan?

Finally someone talk sensible things regarding Indian MIG-21. 😀

If airframe can just be replaced, it will be a brand new plane and indian need no get LCA. But its not feasible to get get brand new Mig-21 since its not practical and cost factor wise. It’s not worth it.

 sensible? Your Air force flies with damaged and fatigued airplanes?

FYKI, air frames get repaired, over hauled and replaced for MiG-21’s. There is a difference between air frame replacement and air frame upgrades.

And what is the co-relation of air frame replacement with LCA program?

Actually this is not true. If so many Air Forces would not be retiring their aircraft and just maintaining them. My understanding is that all airframes have a limit to where which they can be kept servicable by constant updates. Indian MIGs are way over that and this is why IAF is retiring as much of them as possible albeit reduced squadron numbers.

This is very true for Indian MiG-21’s. Air frames sections are replaced in MiG-21 as and when the requirement arises. This was my question of one of the IAF maintainence gent during a ‘know your IAF” city display. I had asked him if the planes crashed as they have old air frame. He said no, if we have a fatigued air frame its replaced. Infact that is true for all parts of the MiG-21. Engine gets replaced, avionics gets replaced. He said there is no question of flying a fatigued or defective air plane as you would drive a truck or car or even sail a ship. He said these aircraft’s remain new most of the times (i quoted this earlier verbatim). And if you notice, I have said this for just MiG-21 in IAF service and no other aircraft or air forces as its out of the scope for reply. IAF is retiring type of MiG-21 as they feel its getting into high maintainence curve and handling issues. Others it has converted to BISON.

So what are the figures of the attrition rate of PAF J-7s relative to IAF MiG-21s? What are the flying hours you are comparing?

I think most of the PAFs J-7s are younger than most of the IAFs MiG-21s, so that is going to be an important factor. However, I would have guessed the PAF F-7s (of all varients) are likley to fly more hours given the extra burden they have relative to the numerically superior IAF, particulalry during times of tension, as we have seen over the previous few year or so.

MiG-21’s air frame, equipment etc are replaced when need arises. This is how most planes are maintained unless you are unable to procure the OEM parts (for ex PAF F-16’s during the embargo). It remains new most of the time. MiG-21 is very easy and cheap (compared to later generations) to maintain as its not very complex to maintain. The issues of attrition is because either the pilot is pushing it too hard (pilot error) or the sourcing of the parts (logically maintainence) has gone wrong. It does not crash because its too old. Old for MIG-21 is used in relation to design. IAF has certain reasons not to convert entire fleet to BISON standards depending on variants and its limitations.

I’m sorry this is complete garbage. Who is in a better position to determine the air force requirements than the IAF itself? DRDO can claim all it likes, but if it can’t produce the goods according to what the IAF needs, then the IAF is left with little choice but to seek other sources

ASR is the guidelines for performance requirement. Its jointly decided by IAF and DRDO. Secondly, the project is managed by IAF reps, tested by IAF deputed pilots. Its reviewed by IAF personnel. Thirdly, the plane designed for the entire spectrum what IAF wants depending upon the operational scenario they envisage. It happened in SU-30 KI case too. IAF took ages to work out requirements, vendors etc. Another point is IAF understands the technology it needs but DRDO knows how to make or arrange that technology.

Regarding the Mk2, its evolved by IAF and DRDO panel. The fuss is on which engine to choose: for example Euro or GE, etc. There are different lobbies at work. There there are technology requirements and changes in dimensions. This means different sets of machining, flight tests etc, but, what it does not mean is the LCA design has been changed to something else. The LCA concept is very much there (the tailless delta, quad fbw etc) . What will happen is when LCA original is gunning for IOC and FOC, LCA MK2, will go for accelerated development as LCA original has already achieved most of testing for air frame, weapons etc.

Ofcourse it is done but its much more serious and with scenarios and missions of interest.also it is considered top secret.
well vietnam ,malesia, venecuela provided good source of info of amerikan fighters, also a espionage effort long ago i think in japan about F-15 secrets revealed and manuals ,etc.
Also live exercise is done with china,KA3AXCTAH and belarus most recent i can remember.

That is a thing of past. I wanted to know if they have actually conducted DACT with western/American planes like West/US uses ex-soviet states fighters for DACT. Data collection is only representative and not actual DACT.
