Could Pakistan have tested a land-attack version of the C-802/803? Could see why some may have thought it was a Harpoon.

Pakistan said that they have been developing it on their own. Its very clear that it is not from China.

The question is why would they do it? It would not make any sense for PN to carry a missile with 100 Km range. It would make a lot of sense to Navalize Babur which PN can use from safe distances.

Also you should note that Pakistan promptly agreed for US inspections for the Harpoon stocks. Even if a single missile was modified for this test US will find out.

A Naval Babur kit is unheard of by now. If Harpoon is of unsafe distance, then why Pakistan went for it? Secondly, there is always a scope of modifying weapons. Why it cannot be done?

Why Pakistan would not like to reverse engineer harpoon? Having a Air/Land launched cruise missile does not mean that there is no motive for modifying/reverse engineering a different class of missile.

Let us see how the inspections go on.

Pakistan could have / not have modified Harpoon. To say that since it has Babur/RAAD and there is no need to modify Harpoons has absolutely no connection.

Because the accusation states Pakistan converted Harpoon into Land attack missile which is Babur’s role.

The question I wanted to ask was that the US alleges that Harpoon has been modified/reverse engineered. Just because Pakistan has other kits doesn’t mean that the modification/reverse engineering has not been done. After all the harpoons haven’t gone to US to servicing after the sanctions. Secondly Harpoons and the other kits you are mentioning have different ranges and applications. Had US not mentioned the modification/reverse engineering on harpoon, adversaries could have been caught off guard. That’s why I do not see the connection with the harpoon incident and the existence of other kits.

So why is it claimed that when you have Babur LACM, why would you modify harpoon? I actually don’t understand the logic.

I have a reverse question. If Pakistan has babur and other kits, why does it needs US Harpoons?

These bases are meant to serve both north & south or for that matter northeast as well.

In principle a base can serve any direction. So, there is no debate on that. Kashmir to Kanyakumari is 2535.74 km approx. Sulur to North border is approx 2000 kms. Its too much of a long leg. Redundancy can also mean backup in northern and central bases don’t deliver. It generally is a reference to back up.

Southern bases are meant for covering proximity territory. Dakshin Prahar and other exercises have been carried out and the need felt. Sulur is LCA transition base.

    >>>>then again, the fact that finally someone is developing air bases and thinking of basing squadrons of fighters in the Deccan peninsula is heartening.

We are going to see more of that in the coming years. The bases opposite Pak and PRC were set up primarily because of the shortlegged IAF fleet at the time, now with Flankers, MRCA and IFR equipped LCA’s – that era is all but gone.

With the PAF acquiring AEW&C of their own, they can get a fair idea of IAF mission planning during peacetime as they can look over into airspace 100-200 km into India. The IAF is already doing the same with aerostat radar & intends to do that with the Phalcons too.

But by developing airbases in the south & moving critical assets there, the IAF takes the initiative firmly. The IAF hides its assets from peeking eyes (and sat photos are no compensation for real time, tac information visible on the radar scope) whereas it continues to look deep within Pak. 😉

In the coming days, we can expect more bases to be revamped & brought up to speed in the south.

The southern bases are not meant to serve north. Southern bases are meant to serve South and South East. Please look at 1000 kms south east of India.

No indication that LCA Sulur base is permanent station. For example Su-30’s were based in Pune as it is closer to production center and was induction base. Subsequently the birds grew up and migrated north.

To be honest !!! That’s completely BS ! …. There are – at least as I know – n no official statements that this is the FC-20, even if it can be assumed that Pakistan might get this model (but I can’t think that this is a model only build and developed for the PAF !)

Also, these dimensions are still completely wrong. From a report early this year, we now know the reat dimensions of the reagular J-10 … and even after some changes, the new model won’t be that “small”

IMO … just some guesswork and nothing important !

In early 2008, it was reported by “The Hindu” newspaper (obviously, as Times of India and Indian Express hardly report on indigenous missile successes), that IAF has ordered 2 squadrons of Akash with an option of ordering 8 more. Since then, the Spyder missile purchase was placed under CBI investigation, and the defence minister went on to say in an interview that the 30 km Akash can’t be compared to the 70 km Israeli MR-SAM.

The Telegraph (and not “mouthpieces” ToI and IE) in March reported that the CBI investigation has revealed that Israel Aircraft Industries has a network of agents who are former IAF officers themselves, to influence the IAF to make mega-purchases of their missiles like Spyder, MR-SAM etc. (news report). The report also says that the CBI and the Central Vigilance Commission are also investigating whether this MR-SAM is merely being “disguised as a Joint Venture”.

What was even more “amusing” was the Hindi-movie song and dance sequence that the IAI representatives put up at Aero-India 2009. Not only was it embarrasingly stupid, it also demonstrates how ‘pathetically’ Israel actually thinks of / treats it’s Indian partners. The lyrics of the “item-song” are here (courtesy, The Telegraph).

There has also been no confirmation that the Spyder missile will be purchased by the IAF after the CBI started investigations into wrongdoings in it’s purchase. ToI’s Rajat Pandit “gleefully” reported late last year that the government may clear it’s purchase, but nothing else has been heard of since then.

I happen to get hold of some old parliamentary reports from Defence Minister George Fernandes time, the report clearly stated that arms manufacturers do not directly influence Armed Forces guys. It reads that ex-armed forces “hob nobbing” with serving ones. Thes ex gents represent the arms manufacturers. One of the boks (i guess shankran nairs RAW book or Gen (retd) VK Sings RAW book) stated that the retired officers are just like pimps for big companies. Their usefulness is limited to getting a contract and some times these ex have not been paid for their services. its a very sad state of affairs.

F-35 Radar’s Electronic Protection Capabilities Validated During Northern Edge 2009 Exercise

Northrop Grumman Corporation has announced that it successfully demonstrated key electronic protection capabilities of the F-35 Lightning II’s AN/APG-81 radar during the recent Northern Edge 2009 (NE09) joint military exercise.

The Northrop Grumman AN/APG-81 active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar was flown on board the company’s BAC 1-11 test aircraft and was integrated into what is considered the United States’ largest and most complex airborne electronic warfare (EW) exercise to date. Northrop Grumman demonstrated the electronic protection (EP) capabilities of the AN/APG-81, by successfully countering advanced electronic attacks (EA), which are intended to degrade, neutralize, or destroy friendly combat capability………………….

Northern Edge 2009 is a joint field training exercise incorporating over 9,000 warfighters supervised by the Joint Electronic Protection for Air Combat (JEPAC). NE09 provided an operationally representative training environment that integrated over a dozen types of U.S. fighter and bomber aircraft as well as an entire U.S. Navy carrier strike group. Large force air, land, and sea combat scenarios along with airborne interdiction of maritime target scenarios provided unparalleled opportunities for warfighters to ‘train-as-they-fight’ in a complex radio frequency environment.

Team members from JEPAC collaborated with the U.S. Air Force and Naval Warfare Centers as well as the military service research laboratories to present and integrate a realistic twenty-first century threat capabilities in NE09, effectively exposing over 700 aircrew service members to an unprecedented level of advanced electronic attack scenarios. This environment presented a rare and valuable opportunity to observe the performance of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter’s APG-81 radar.

The JEPAC is one of ten test projects under the Office of the Secretary of Defense-sponsored Joint Test and Evaluation (JT&E) Program that develops joint tactics techniques and procedures to improve combat effectiveness through the use of electronic protection via timely integration of specific target track generating capabilities with tactical shooters during combat employment through the use of enhanced testing methodologies such as Northern Edge. The NE09 exercise is approved by the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS); scheduled by the Commander, United States Pacific Command (USPACOM); and sponsored by the Alaskan Command (ALCOM).

Weellll . . . . that depends. If it’s more politically convenient for the UAE to sell them direct, I’m sure Dassault & the DGA would be happy to structure the deal that way. The French are offering to take them back to be sure of getting the Rafale sale, not because they’re mad keen to sell on the Mirages themselves.

Oh, what a change of heart. Considering your previous stand. Like previous posts you still claim that

The French are offering to take them back to be sure of getting the Rafale sale, not because they’re mad keen to sell on the Mirages themselves.

Actually, you are wrong. They are not revealing something, it should clear up in few months. There is a buying interest already and French would like to repeat what they already in the Indian – Qatari deal.

But some people just can’t seem to be able to accept that China might actually be able to influence the decisions of other countries through economic and political leverage.

At the same time, the UAE’s neutrality should not be taken as Chinese diplomatic influence. As I said earlier, UAE rarely gets into controversies. They are more interested in their own business.

Having said that the British hold more sway in UAE than any other nation.

In spite of all the China – UAE trade etc, my personal view is that UAE will not do anything conflicting. It has got nothing to do with China threat. UAE steers clear of conflicting issues.
